That is beautiful! I've tried to grow them but alas, the snails just think I've set out a lovely entree. There's very little left when they are finished. Do you not have snails/slugs?

That looks exactly like one I have called Gold Standard. I love it. Like you I lost a tree that shaded some other big Hostas. They are suffering and need a new home.

Sjerin, there are some so called "slug resistant" hostas. They have thicker, krinkley leaves. The habit is more upright with the leaves held up off the ground. dedtired's picture is a perfect example.

oh my goodness that is beautiful I love the color of it too. I do not have any Hosta and I would love some I don't think I could put them in my front bed though it gets so much direct sunlight but my side bed on the side of the house might be a candidate.

I just love hosta and wish I had planned ahead to have a bed of different varieties. I do believe this is Gold Standard, Gazania. Somewhere I have the tag that came with it.

Yes, I do have snails and slugs, but they generally don't bother this bed. I have hosta on the other side of the house that gets "holey".

I love Hostas. Didn't even know what they were when I moved here from CA. I now have hostas along the north side of my house in a strip of dirt between the house and driveway. We don't have snails here but the rabbits like the hostas. Now that I have Cooper, my black Lab, the rabbits aren't in my yard as much. I see Cooper killed a baby something, probably a rabbit.

A couple of mine are huge, too--big, big leaves on a lush plant. I ordered several hostas from Bluestone this year from their half-price sale, and then discovered larger hosta plants for slightly less money at Lowe's and Home Depot. But they're not named varieties, and I enjoy growing the named ones.

Sjerin, there's a great product called Sluggo--effective against slugs, but won't hurt anything else.

I use the Sluggo bait and it works great on slugs.

I've found that one extremely successful ecological treatment to deter slugs and snails around not only my Hostas but my entire garden area has been the liberal application of dried [used] coffee grounds sprinkled on the ground around the plantings. Don't laugh! :-) They work! And the grounds can be applied whenever the need arises without doing any harm to the plant or the garden itself. As a matter of fact, my Azaleas and Rhodies are thriving on them...as are my house plants. I've mixed the grounds into the potting soil I'm using to start rooted clippings. The clippings root faster and the evolving plant is much healthier.

This whole coffee grounds method started out as a personal experiment and has been wildly successful as far as I'm concerned. I've had nary a snail or slug in my garden area in over three years since I began the grounds application. Because I'm a heavy coffee drinker...the pest control is a very inexpensive method for me. Give it a try! It's worth the effort.

Beautiful hosta. I have several in my yard as well. A couple of them were under a tree that eventually died but they seem to still be thriving. We don't get endless days of hot sunshine like some areas so maybe that helps. Our sunny days are intermingled with grey rainy PNW days.

My Bressingham blues are that large and larger! I LOVE the big varieties as much as I love the mouse ears and other miniatures.

Hosta do well in our shady yard... I think I have at least 12 kinds and plan on getting more.

Both of those are awesome specimens. I don't have a nice shady spot, so any hosta I plant do get burned. I've given up. I can't get over how lovely yours are.

Your hosta is beautiful. Right now in my front beds I have hostas that are about 3 times as big as yours. I know they need to be divided but because of bad storms over the last few years I don't have any more shady beds. The one you have will take some sun & not burn like the all green ones.
sjerin-if you have slugs take some small paper cups cut down to 1/4 size & fill with beer. They love the beer & will go into the cups & die. This also works for a veggie garden.

Wow, wonderful advice here! Thanks, everyone, and detired, I'm sorry if I derailed your thread. I do use Sluggo but after the first go-round I often forget to toss out a little more when it's time. I will definitely try the coffee idea--are decaf grounds ok too?

No derailment, I just wanted to share the hosta. I should get out and take some other garden photos before the summer turns everything to toast.

I don't drink decaf, sjerin, so I can't give you an answer to your question. However, the greatest deterrent of the grounds to the snails and slugs lies in the fact that they can't...or won't...travel over the coffee grounds, I think using decaf is worth a try.

As to whether the decaf grounds would work where rooting clippings is concerned...my science knowledge suggests that they might not because their chemistry has been chemically altered. But I'm not a scientist, per se...so one could always try.

Beautiful pics! I'm a hosta lover also. I only have 2 varieties but the are quite prolific. Do they spread via their seeds or the root system?

my grandmother used coffee grounds around her plants and had beautiful gardens. Her Hydrangea were enormous and loaded with huge blooms and she swore it was the coffee grounds. I need to have my husband start saving them for my flower beds.

I too use the used coffee grounds around my Gardenia and they really grow quite well. I've mixed the grounds in with potting soil when making clippings too with success.

The hosta spread via the root system. I do occasionally divide them, although not the huge ones yet. I find that my Stella D'oro day lilies need dividing more than anything in my garden. All my beds are small so the spreaders get "re-homed" pretty often. I out them at the end of my driveway with a sign that says free, and they are gone rather quickly.

The giant hosta has consumed my Siberian Iris. The iris struggled to poke their heads between the leaves but ultimately didn't make it. If you wanted to see the iris flowers, you had to look under the hosta!

Here is a picture of a hosta that I planted in a large container last year. The pot is very large and it was costing a lot fo fill it with annuals, plus it is in a shady spot. In early spring I put pansies in them. Later the hosta reemerged, but the pansies continue to poke their little faces through. I love the effect. I think the pansies are doing okay since the hosta shades them and keeps them cool. They usually give up the ghost when hot weather arrives. I have two pots filled like this. They are in a rather dull corner but I think the bright green hosta livens it up.

Just got back from the thrift shop where I scored the cutest metal chair to use in the garden. When it is all"cuted" up, I will post it here. The back has a sunshine face. It is black metal with an ugly orange pleather seat. I will remove the seat and put a pot of flowers in it. So excited!
