DGS's First 'Graduation'

Picture 15 five-year-olds wearing mortar boards and oversized neon sunglasses, rapping out nursery rhyme lyrics to the tune from "YMCA"! Yesterday moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas, attended a graduation ceremony including skits and a chorus as these fresh little ones completed Pre-K. Diplomas! Cake! Punch! Balloons! As each child came up to receive a diploma, the teacher asked what he or she wanted to be as a grown-up. (Fortunately for his status in Grandpa's will, DGS altered his answer from, "A White Sox baseball player," to "A dog doctor.")

One of the teachers put together a 10-minute DVD of pictures taken throughout the school year. (Kleenex, anyone?) Watching this, I thought I could see 'the woman to be' in the faces of the girls, but the boys? Nah! Just who they are today -- all action!

DGS will start Kindergarten in the fall along with the other two Musketeers. (Watch out, unsuspecting K-teacher: Live wires, incoming!) No word on whether DGS's current 'intended', Shealin, will go there too. LOL

A teacher confided the following overheard conversation:

He: I'm going to marry you.

She: OK, but you have to give me a ring.

He: Sure! My mom has lots of rings.

(I *wondered* why DGS hugged me yesterday after the big ceremony, then turned my left hand over for a quick peek at my diamond.)

Sounds so cute, and a real tear jerker of a day. I bet moms were handing out extra tissues!

Thanks for the advice Gyr Falcon! Don't get me wrong - I desperately want rain as much as the rest of California. I was merely adding that El Nino could complicate issues with the DG install. I'm totally rooting for it regardless of this project - and my newly planted natives need the moisture to get off to a good start. I was digging and pulling out all the Bermuda grass/rhizomes out of the yard for the planting and the soil was literally BONE dry. It was very, very, sad and yet another reminder of the toll this drought is taking on plants, wildlife, and people. After all, the drought is the major reason behind our deciding to yank out the lawn and plant with natives. Anyway, back to topic....Hmm, I guess then stabilizer is the way to go. I've been reading good things about the pre-stabilized DG but they are hard to find in my area - and paying $155 for shipping a mere 2 cu. yards of DG from out of town is unappealing. If anyone can recommend a relatively close and reliable source of stabilized DG in Northern Orange County, let me know! Thanks guys!

Annie - I've been slow to read messages online because my girls just graduated kindergarten - the other end of the spectrum - even though my friends and I are old enough to have high school grads. . . Ashley looks beautiful and happy. I was touched by the scholarship story. We founded a scholarship when my brother died at age 28 and it has been a surprising experience because two of the students who received the scholarship kept in contact with my parents, including a Vietnamese student who came to the US with nothing and later gave my parents a hand-carved tea set as a thank you. The last thing I ever imagined was my father having a genuine affection for someone from such a different culture. Later, a young woman from the same college moved in two doors from my parents and she has my brother's old job at the printing company where he worked . . . 17 years later. Talk about coincidences. (She remembers the scholarship although she wasn't a recipient.) Her daughter is the same age as my girls and they sometimes play together. I'm sure Ashley will always honor the memory of receiving such a special scholarship. She really seems like a special girl. Karen

I just love to see young people doing things like that. I hope they boosted the Salvation Army's collection. You should be proud. It takes a lot of effort to play an instrument well and get good grades too. Wonderful!

I remember my first daughter's preschool "graduation". they wore mortar board hats made of construction paper, and marched out to a recording of "Pomp and Circumstance". They sang a few songs for their audience (parents, siblings, grandparents), then Teachers gave them "diplomas". No boring speeches. Then refreshments for all! I cried thru most of it.
