Mommajean I just took the vinyl siding off my house and am putting up Hardieplank. That vinyl faded pretty badly and was not mounted solid against the house like Hardiplank is. I already have the plank and am starting to doubt whether the installer I planned to use is actually qualified to install it. I don't have his quote yet. What were your quotes if you don't mind telling me. I am looking for another installer in my area and just wanted something to bump against. I know installation pricing can vary from area to area.

Vinyl can look much worse than Hardiplank when both are installed wrong.

Hardiplank is more weather risistant, resists sun fading(can be painted just like wood if necessary), and is more wind resistant when caulked.

I was a volunteer crew leader for several years in the local Habitat for Humanity chapter where wthere were fron 10 to 20 houses built each year. My main job was teaching how to install both types of siding and supervising that installation by volunteers.

I preferred Hardiplank to vinyl. After several years, the chapter ceased using vinyl---too many problems---weedeater damage, warping, fire damage from houses next door, basketball/baseball damage and so on with the vinyl. Fire will damage Hardiplank if the fire is focused on a small area---think Molotov cocktail in a quart beer bottle. I had to replace one piece of the Hardiplank and wash the smoke damage off the wall. That was it.
