golden oak-- red or white oak?
Comments (3)As Linda says, it's usually white oak, and the finish was often amber shellac. Red oak was once believed to be unsuitable for furniture, until they ran out of white oak, when it was used of necessity. It takes more effort and skill to successfully season and store red oak, because it gets gray mildew stains easily. Casey...See MoreFlooring w/Golden Oak & Dark Granite (& Where?)
Comments (0)Hi everyone! I found this website while trying to update my kitchen. Like others before me, I am driving myself totally crazy, and everyone around me : / trying to choose a new floor and I am hoping beyond hope you can HELP ME! Currently I have 25 year old louvered golden oak cabinets (that I need to keep), new Twilight Bahia granite counters (blacks, grays, browns), and 25 year old linoleum that is scalloped cut around the counter height snack bar area, (old berber carpet next to it extending all the way to the front door). My worry is that the louvered cabinet doors and the "not plain" granite will not go well with too busy of a floor (ie: staggered tiles, too much color variation)...so was wondering what to get and WHAT COLOR? Two ideas to consider: One is to just replace the kitchen floor with ??... laminate/tile/vinyl/? and keep the scallop/carpet scheme (with new carpet). OR, extend the new kitchen floor all the way to the front door (which would include the kitchen, dining, and foyer areas). (I am definitely going to get new carpet, new dining room set, etc. so disregard those!) The entire area is raised (via kneehigh wood studs) so heavyish stained concrete like material couldn't work even though I think that'd look cool. I want something that looks like a nice quality...would slatelook type laminate tile be nice? Is sheet vinyl not appropriate for a dining/foyer? What colors? (bluish gray...brownish gray...tan/cream??) Do I need to match the granite counter specifically? (Note: There is a bluish/grayish tone fieldstone fireplace in the dining room...Paint colors could easily change...I was just in a "color" mood last year.) You all sure do seem to know what you're doing! I so respect that! PLEASE...Do you have any suggestions for me? I sure would appreciate any help! (I am going to try and post pictures. This is my very first post so I do NOT really know what I'm doing!) (Also posting to Kitchen Forum. Hope this works!) Comments (5)Thank you all so much! It's not that I don't like antique brass, I think I was afraid to use anything in my new kitchen that would remind of this kitchen. I special ordered a chandelier so that I could have it in antique brass for my dining room. The primary color of my living room is gold, and I have gold in my den too, both these rooms are off my kitchen. Amazing that I was shying away from gold for my countertops. Part of my problem has been trying to get something that would go well with gold, but not be gold! I really do like the idea of "gold" in my countertops, and weather I use brushed nickel or antique brass for my hardware is something I will figure out when my cabinets and countertops are in. Comments (15)So, does this mean you have to have a new kitchen floor laid? The color looks good. In your first pictures, I preferred the lightest color, then the next lightest. I thought the dark one looked like a "wanna be walnut, but I'm oak". I have a prefinished oak flooring in natural that I have had for 10 years and I love it. Its by Mirage. I appreciate the light fresh look with my rooms. I had to have it reinstalled because the subcontracted installer banged up every nail insertion, because he must have had a damaged nailer. The owner of the flooring company came out the the flooring rep from Mirage, and they determined it was installation error. The finish was warrantied for something like 30 Years (can't remember the number) but with all the nicks, it wouldn't last. New install was great and the floor has been very good to me :) I'm getting it again soon in my bedroom, using a different installer company. All this to say I love my light flooring. It is fresh and can go modern or traditional, imho....See Morealku05
