Now fresh tomatoes

It has been reported that fresh tomatoes have been linked to Salmonella. Is there anything safe to eat anymore? It was suggested to only eat fresh tomatoes that are home grown. I just bought a container of grape tomatoes and wonder if washing well befor eating is enough, or if the salmonella is inside. Dottie

They think it is just the large tomatoes and they're not really sure if tomatoes are even the culprit yet.

I wouldn't be afraid to eat the grape tomatoes.

SIL served a side dish which surprised me when she said it was from the freezer -- one of the few that actually improve with freezing! I've made it ever since, and my only complaint is that you do NOT thaw it in the microwave -- gotta remember to put it in the fridge the a day or two before. An equal amount of fresh tomatoes and cucumbers, thinly sliced. If you like onions, a few thinly sliced rings from a sweet onion. Layer into a freezer container. Make a mild sweet-sour vinaigrette: any multiple of Â¼ cup sugar +1/3 cup cider vinegar +Â¼ cup ice water + 2 tablespoons canola oil + pinch of salt and pinch of black pepper. Shake well and then pour over the vegs to cover and then press plastic wrap over the mix (to prevent freezer burn), lid securely and freeze. Patti says you can use thin slices of zucchini instead of cukes, but add a bit more pepper than usual.

sandra The link at the bottom gives pretty good instructions for freezing tomatoes. It's probably the easiest vegetable there is to freeze unless you want to take lots of pains with it. There are lots of ways to handle tomatoes you want to freeze. A lot of people just put whole unblemished tomatoes in a Food Saver bag, remove the air, and seal them. Others cut them apart and remove the blemishes and stem ends. That's my method since by the time I get around to it, I have surfaces everywhere covered with tomatoes. IOW, I don't peel or seed them but blend them all together in a food processor (my Smoothie maker). Other people remove the skins before freezing them by giving them a short boiling-water bath. Some people freeze them individually on cookie sheets and then put them in plastic / Food Saver bags. Some people make the sauce first and freeze it in blocks, then put it into large plastic / Food Saver bags. So you have a lot of choices, but once you understand you don't have to blanch them and decide how much up-front time you have to process them, it's very easy. Depends on if you want to do some protection covering or not. Late fall we get a few cold nights but many warm days in between so it works for me with just a little extra work. And any greens left on the vines come hard freeze time I just pull up the whole plant and hang it upside down in the greenhouse or basement. They go right ahead and ripen. We have had ripe tomatoes on Thanksgiving that way. You lose nothing by trying. ;) Dave

They reported last night that the Texas tomatoes are safe. They think the tomatoes came from New Mexico. It is scary! You have to wonder what is next.

I am really enjoying the fesh tomatoes out of our garden!! They are so flavorful!

Friday late afternoon I stopped at WalMart to pick up some groceries.

I wanted tomatoes. There were none of any kind in the store.

Wonder if that had anything to do with it?

I bought a couple of beautiful, large tomatoes the other day.

Ontario grown ... (I'm pretty sure)!

Do you think that I should eat 'em ... or get all a'quiver over it?

Actually, I had slice of one last night.

Ain't dead yet (or, if I am, have I gone to heaven)?

Looks a lot like the same old place!

Actually ... it doesn't seem like Hell, most of the time, either. And I'd have to amend that to "hardly ever" ... maybe even, "never".

Do you know, sometimes I think that we get a foretaste of heaven ... here.

Or, of hell, for that matter ... if there is such: seems to me rather strange [uncharacteristic?] for a so-called "loving" God to condemn some of us, irretrievably, to torment ... forever?).

Actually, when I contemplate what a mess we've made of this, His wonderful world, and of all of the people that we've killed, I can see where S/He might be tempted.

But then ... maybe He'd pray, " ... let me not lead myself into temptation ...." (Or, if I get there, not to let it overcome my better nature).

May God love you - always.

I'm not a big spinach eater so that didn't bother me. Not a big tomato eater so this doesn't have me questioning why should life go on.

Up to 14 states involved now, nothing in Minnesota, but Wisconsin has been hit. According to the StarTribune article:
"Cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, tomatoes sold with the vine still attached and homegrown tomatoes are likely not the source of the outbreak, Busemeyer said.

Also not associated with the outbreak are raw Roma, red plum and round red tomatoes from Arkansas, California, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Belgium, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Israel, Netherlands and Puerto Rico, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Association."

I'm curious about the vine being attached having anything to do with it. Seems strange.

Also, in the CDC article, they say at the top that Romas are thought to be involved, then below say raw red Romas are OK.

I usually cook tomatoes when using them so I guess I won't change that for now.

Now if you start putting together a burger with e-coli topped with salmonella tomaters and a nice spinach salad...

I don't like store bought tomatoes anyway. I am looking forward to my home grown tomatoes.

I haven't had a really good tomato in so long. I envy you guys with your own gardens. Wish you could mail me some. :-)
