Suggestions for family room decor

We recently moved into a house (late 60s floorplan) and are having a hard time deciding on the placement of furniture and choice of patio door treatment in the family room, given its layout. Hopefully the attached pics gives a good idea (more here). We use the FR most of the time (TV watching, play area for kids) - there is a separate formal living room. We believe the TV can only be placed near one of two walls - the current choice is based on visibility from the kitchen and the fact that the reflection during the day is probably prohibitive on the wall facing the patio door, although I haven't tried it. I considered placing it in one of the two corners but quickly rejected that based on the size. Once we have settled on the location for the TV, we'll probably mount it on the wall. All the furniture in the room besides the TV is disposable. We were hoping to get a leather sectional (shade of red) and placing its corner near the entrance to the room with the chaise pointing towards the TV. The breakfast table near the kitchen can be made smaller. Does anybody have suggestions on how we could lay the couches (sofa + loveseat, or sofa + chairs, or a sectional, or ?). Does it make sense to move the TV somewhere else in the room?

The patio door slides from right to left. We were considering curtains that slide in the same direction. Any suggestions?

it is already looking great.....i would only suggest hanging the TV on the wall. ...Regarding curtains that slide in the same door direction,,,you can do that.......that would look great..

Thanks for your suggestions! The throw is a gold color. I actually took it from my living room (which is next to my family room) and the Living room is painted gold (BM Adam's Gold). Because the LR is painted a gold, I did not want to paint my Family room gold. SO...I took the bold move a painted the room chocolate brown. I like it...I looks good. The White frames really pop against the chocolate brown. On a wall that is not pictured, I want to do a wall collage of white frames with bright/fun family photos. (If anyone has suggestions for photo collages with white frames and a template, please let me know. I found one online but it was $350 for the template and 10 frames...and I am not willing to spend that much $$) We painted the wall with the TV a light blue as an accent. The TV/Entertainment center is gone. We got a new flatscreen...I am waiting for the new console. I am shopping for blue panels to add some more color/warmth. I agree with the coffee table suggestion...I will be buying a round coffee table with stools that fit underneath so that my kids have a space for eating a snack or playing a board game. Thanks again for all the suggestions and feel free to keep them coming! I will post pictures of the final product (assuming I ever finish...LOL!)

Either a vertical rectangular piece, or a nice floor plant that comes up to at least the height of the bottom of the TV. The space doesn't need much. I would have instead just centered the TV on the wall and not added anything else.

I’m in a similar situation with a small living room. We found a wonderful sofa that’s about 80” wide after searching for months. Most websites have filters so you can narrow the search (pun intended) to the proper width for the room. I’d recommend a sofa with narrow arms so you can comfortably sit 2 people, a single or double seat cushion and a not too deep seat. Then place a narrow sofa table at the back of the sofa. The sofa faces the built in. Have 2 swivel chairs opposite the sofa with a small profile table in between the chairs. A slim coffee table in front of the sofa. And good lighting!

A smaller, more transitional or traditional style chair in a solid medium neutral tone would fit the bill. A chair done in leather like your ottoman or a color pulled from your fireplace stone would really be nice. A ceiling fan would seem to be a plus in that space…warm kitchen/bodies on the sectional/fireplace…and that one looks beautiful in your room. I’ll post some light and console outfit options later…😊

Oakley, the first response is spam.

Ironically, I was looking at Bluemountain cards, yesterday. It was DH's birthday and he was out of town on business.

I used to send them because they were free. When I was on their site, I picked out a card and when I went to send it, they said I had to sign up for an account.

Went to 123 cards and sent one from there, instead. Bummer that the card was never recieved. DH thought I had forgotten or ignored his Bday. ;( I sent him a forward of the card when we were chatting on the phone. All is forgiven. :)

Empien, is it possible to have the window treatments block the sun, during the time when you have the glare issue, so you have more choices on the layout?

Could you do a floorplan with measurements? The pictures are great but dimensions are helpful:)

Yes, I guess I could do a floorplan with measurements, but I am a novice at this. Is there some (preferably free or cheap!) software I can use?

parma42, yes it's definitely possible to use a window treatment on the patio door (curtains? blinds?) for the glare issue. Do you suggest moving the TV to the other wall would be more desirable?
