Just found out Grandson needs

hearing aids.

He was just down here visiting for about a month.

DD had to take him to a specialist as he

failed the hearing test to enter kindergarten.

She is all wound up because insurance will not

pay for hearing aids.

His loss is caused by nerve damage.

~~SIGH~~ Feel really bad. She is way up there

and I am down here. (9 to 10 hour drive when hubby drives, takes me longer.)

Could you fly up to see them?

I work at an elem. school, and we have a couple children who use hearing aids. One requires the teacher to wear a device also. It works out fine. It's good that you know now so he won't be struggling in school. But for now I know you are worried about him, about the cost. I'm sorry. It's a tough time for your family.

Hearing aids can be financed so you don't have to come up with all that cash at one time.

Do they know why he has nerve damage?

If true then there should be peaches on it. If you get a peach tree or two to grow but it is unproductive you might try grafting a scion of his onto a branch for future use on topped failures (if they survive just no fruit). I really would be surprised but if true this variety deserves to be preserved and propagated.

Consentual sex - didn't anyone tell the boy the law? Or did the parents just hand him some condoms and tell him to have safe sex as he was going out the door? I understand that some boys may be on the registry for stupidity and they will live that mistake for the rest of their lives. But let's not forget that men can always stop - stop if someone says no, stop if they think the girl is underage, stop if they are aware that the parents at at any time could charge them, stop if they have any concerns whatsoever that this isn't right. Stop. That's within their control, not the woman's. Do I feel sorry for these young men who couldn't control their hormones? Yes. Would I throw out the registry of animals because their stupidity put them in the same boat? No. Was it a case where a gal was putting out to a group of men and decided man number 6 was a rapist and the first 5 were not? I have a major problem with this comment. Is this the reason you would have done away with a registry? Because some woman put out for 5 men and on the 6th she said no? This is the very reason women don't charge men with rape. Because some snail of a defense attorney is going to put the victim on trial claim because she put out for 5 men, the 6th was no different. Shame on you Wildchild. Shame. When a woman says no, she means no. And no rational man is beyond their ability to stop. Only the animals keep on going. As for consentual sex with a minor, whatever your personal experiences are, a boy, no a man, should know and understand the consequences. I don't care if some woman sings him The Song of Sirens. If he puts his hormones in front of the law, he takes his chances. Even if the girl consented. Often times they consent because it's the captain of the football team and they want to be accepted. That doesn't make the man any less responsible. It takes more than a "he said, she said" to get put on that registry. It takes a trial, a hearing, a judge and maybe even a jury to hear all the evidence, including dragging the so-called "victim" through every relationship and every photograph and every friend she's ever had. So no, I don't cry for those on the registry, although I do agree there are some on there who may not belong. But take a look at the registry and some of the people in your neighborhood on it, and tell me they are all just poor misunderstood souls caught in a web of a lying female.

Surferchiky, I agree with ulrike, I think your mixed feelings about the situation are justified. It does sound like your DH did his legal duty if not truly fatherly duty by paying child support for a child he did not know and now is open to starting a relationship with that child. It's pretty harsh judgement to come down on your DH without knowing all of the facts about the estrangement from the mother, their relationship if any and so on. Don't worry too much about any child you have with your DH playing second fiddle to his first daughter. They don't really even have a relationship yet and are strangers to each other. It would be pretty unusual if they quickly developed such a close father/daughter relationship that your child together would be relegated to some lower position in DH's life. That being said, this girl IS his daughter and DID come first. You did know about her years ago and although you may not have expected her to enter DH's life beyond child support she has and both of them have the right to know each other. Relax your anxiety about it, she may like you both and you may like her. A deep relationship between them will take a lot of time, in fact, if you have a child that might facilitate closeness all around. who knows? I applaud your DH for doing the right thing. I can understand the other posters thinking he should have played an active father role all along but once again, we don't have all of the facts and it's pretty common for many women and their families to not even want fathers involved especially if there was not a real relationship in the first place. Easy for me to say but just be fair to the girl, flexible with DH because this must be major for him and be easy with yourself. You don't have to be a mean SM like yours was, be yourself and don't forget how it was for you. there is no suggestion of her living with you is there?

Check into United Way, they offer grants for hearing aids if you qualify.

I would think that the insurance would cover it, if that is the only way he can hear in school. It might be considered cosmetic to begin with, but the dr. should be able to argue the issue and get them to cove it.

My prayers are with him.

Sure hope you can beat the system. It makes me so angry when children, teens and others cannot get these aids when insurance pays for every known drug, and other things especially to make old men young!!! Just a vent.
But can you contact the companies themselves? Like the prescription companies they may offer discounts.
We need to write our coungress people to get the law changed.

Eric was born with genetic hearing loss (cookie cutter loss). Didn't get aids until he started college. Was picked on in school... by teachers non the less!!! He learned to lip read at a VERY young age and his speech isn't effected by not being able to hear. I think it helped that his dad has severe genetic loss also.

Eric has had two brands of aids and has given up on having them work for him. They do not hold up to sweat and he sweats LOTS! Most of his employers have been very understanding and have gotten him amplifiers for the phones and we search high and low for low phones for the house- got an ancient rotary phone that will wake the dead!

Please have the parents keep the closed captioning on the TV at all times for the little guy. that way he will learn to read fast and hopefully, it will help him to learn to read lips. Also having it on all the time will make him feel less stigmatized about being the only one in the house that needs it. I use cc even when Eric isn't home. School should also offer any videos in cc without trouble (ADA laws require reasonable adaptions). Also, watch when they buy DVDs, not all come with cc and it is an "act of God" to get the store to take them back!!!!!

I hate to hear that insurance won't cover this. I know it's never covered my mom's hearing aids, either. Why is that? I'm pretty certain I'll need them at some point. I can already tell I'm not hearing everything at age 45.

Oh, thank-you all for your kind words.

His father has nerve damage and wears hearing aids.
We knew this was a possibility, but always thought
down the road.....

They are separated and she is on her own. He just turned 5 so she no longer qualifies for WIC.

She just got the father to start paying support last July.
They have been apart for over 3 years. She had to get a PFA
against him as he broke the door down to get in at her.
And I know that I don't get told everything.

BTW for me to fly up there takes longer than to drive
up there. There are no direct flights and they send you WAY out of your way.

Anyway, thank-you all again. It means a lot.

Call the local domestic violence shelter- they may have an audiologist on their Board of Directors (ya never know until you ask!). Also see if there are any schools for audiology in the area, they may have programs. Also speak with the school social worker (not the school counselor) the school SW usually covers multiple schools and has more ideas for community resources. Also speak with the courts/lawyers- The father's wages could be garnished if he isn't caught up and they might be able to "tack on extra" for medical expenses. I am sure it would be complicated but if your grandson is as hard on aids as my adults husband- you will need all the ehlp you can get!

dgd had hearing loss they found a day after she was born(just one side) the school district they live in has already visited twice, and she'll be a year in august.

i've never understood why aids wern't covered, either...

Are they SURE HA's are not covered? Our insurance will cover AIDs until they turn 18, then cover again after 65. Doesn't help that DH doesn't fall into those two catagories. If they have a HSA they can use that money, also if they have a 521B they can use that money. Lions clubs too will give money for AIDs (at least ours did!)
