I love BM Mascapone I am using it for my cabs and trim as well...good luck!

BM White Dove is a good choice. Prep is key; sand, prime, sand again, using tack cloth after each sanding. Then paint with a 6" foam roller or quality brush. You might still see some of the wood grain, but it will be minimal.
Behr's Polar Bear is very close to White Dove.
Here are my daughter's before and after pics of their budget remodel. They have light yellow walls,gray laminate and white/gray subway tile backsplash. The Polar Bear white works.

prairiemom, your daughter's kitchen looks great. Her kitchen seems to be about the size of mine and we are doing ours on a very small budget, too. I love all the lovely kitchens posted here, but it's nice to see that dramatic changes can be made on a shoestring also.

I should add that we did this with a 6 month old and 2 year old underfoot. It's now a sweet little kitchen that gets quite a workout every day.
We took all the doors and hardware off, and put two little cup hooks on the bottom of each door. After painting each side we hung them by the hooks on wires stretched tightly across the garage. We ran a dehumidifier and were able to recoat a few hours later. It took us 2 1/2 days to do the cabinets but it's a fairly small kitchen.

Prariemom, your daughter's kitchen transformation is great!! Very inspiring. I'm in the middle of painting my cabinets white and debating about countertop colors. Do you happen to know what laminate pattern she chose?

Changa, there are all sorts of threads about the perfect white recommending colors (though of course right now I can't find much; go figure). Cloud White and Simply White are pretty safe choices if you're using the same white in multiple places. Dove White is popular, too, but I think I've heard it can look dingy in some lighting, so you'll want to try samples. Many people like the ready-mix Benjamin Moore White, too. I don't think your plan is overkill...but then, I'm planning on doing my cabinets, trim & eventually interior doors in the same shade (a custom white mixed in Ace Cabinet & Trim paint, but reminiscent of Simply White).

Thanks for the kind words. I do think people need to know it is possible to upgrade a kitchen for around $2K. That included the new range, and labor for a handyman to rebuild the cabinet to the right of the range and install new countertops, sink and backsplash. They are so pleased with the results.
The laminate is Formica brand, Labrador Granite. It's very generic, but she loves that it hides water spots and crumbs until she can get them wiped up. She's a busy mama.
We did the Behr Polar Bear because we were at HoDe and though they couldn't match White Dove, Polar Bear seemed right. I think it works well with the yellow and gray. Never thought that could work!

jessicaml, thanks for the suggestions! I will get samples of Cloud White, Simply White, and Dove White and see which matches best with the colors we have.

Thanks for the info, prariemom! I agree that people need reminders of modest upgrades. I think these mini-make-overs are even more inspiring to me than the "magazine-ready" kitchens because they're attainable! I just wish my painting went as fast as yours did. :p I don't have kids yet, but I still love, love the idea of a pattern that hides spills. Off to find a sample chip...thanks again!!

Our walls are BM White Heron and the cabinets are BM Chantilly Lace. The White Heron is slightly creamy, while the Chantilly Lace is more crisp.

prairiemom and gsciencechick, your posts came just at the right time with your pictures since I am almost ready to paint my kitchen cabinets. I really wanted to change them but it is too costly so I will have to find someone to help me prime them and paint them. I need more light in my home.

I love both the Chantily White and the BM Dove White colors. The BM White Heron walls are also very nice. My trim is BM White everywhere but I think BM White cabinets would be a little bit too white? What do you think? I need to chance the lights in the kitchen and the floor and counters but with my new car purchase (my car is 8 years old and does not protect my head since the head rest is not adjustable so I had enough and have been looking for a car that would be comfortable for a petite person like I am and I just found it), I really can only do a little bit at a time in my kitchen. I just really can't stand the laminate oak 20 year old kitchen cabinets anymore.
