I'm going to color match my creamy cabinets and use it on all the trim in the house - our dining room is really an eat in kitchen ;-) and it will have wainscoting right up to the cabinets, so they have to match. Definitely something to think about when choosing your cabinet color.

If I didn't have the wainscoting, I'd still color match it, at least in that room. I like creamy white trim though, so will carry it all through the house, except the upstairs bathroom.

I used the same off-white for all the trim woodwork as I did for my cabinets. Benjamin Moore Frappe.

I also painted a large 2-piece desk and bookcase in black as an accent color, but I now think I should have done the same off-white to provide more cohesiveness to the whole space. THe desk and bookcase are in the same part of the kitchen as the eat-in table.

That's 3 for the same color. Does anyone ever use different color whites for trim and cabs???

I have seen people use two different colors. I am using the same white on all cabs and trim. I have very white, though, not cream. My friend who used two colors had creamy cabinets and white trim. Just started white trim where cabinets ended.

We went with a brighter white for the trim/doors with our off-white/creamy cabinets. Our cabinets were prefinished by the manufacturer (Durasupreme) and I knew it would drive me nuts trying to find a white/cream paint to match exactly but I also wanted to stay with the same trim color throughout the house which also has less of sheen (satin) than the cabinets (semi-gloss). But it's really a matter of personal perference where there is not a right or wrong - just different.

We used the same color with different sheen--semi-gloss on the cabs, and gloss on the crown molding, window casing, etc.
Cabs: BM "Lemon Chiffon" oil-base semi-gloss
Trim: BM "Lemon Chiffon" oil-base gloss
Walls: BM Aura "Cloud White" satin
Accent Walls: BM Aura "Mountain Lane" satin
Ceiling: stark white flat

There's no reason not to mix and match tones of white in the same room IMHO. Note the white sink, creamy cabs and backsplash etc. It all seems to work.

I sure did. Although my wall color is an off-white cream that almost matches the cabinets....my trim is bright white since the space is pretty open. I don't like off white trim, personally.

I LOVE your kitchen and was looking everywhere for the pictures-- is it on the finished kitchen blog? (if not, maybe you could get starpooh to put the pictures up incase the threads disappear). your's is one of my favorites.

My island is a creamy white but my trim color is BM Atrium White throughout the house a soft white but definitely white. I wanted something that would go with any color I painted my walls and was easy to touch up.

Our cabs are a creamy white (with soft yellow undertones) and our trim is a bright white. I think it looks fine. So far. ;^)

I think this thread shows that you will get answers of every variety. Its really going to be up to you to see what is comfortable to your eye. "clash" is very subjective. Are you looking for affirmation of what you are already thinking....?

are you painting your cabinets yourself or is it a manufacturer's "white/creamy" that you need to match or not?

wendy: My cabs are being made by a very small 2 man shop locally. Good news--I get my choice of colors. Bad news, I have to choose (and I agonize over every decision!). So was just looking to see what was the "norm". Thought it might help my decision making!

We're remodeling and building on, and I have white beadboard in all the front rooms leading to the kitchen. The cabs are the same color as the beadboard, and we are doing the rest of the trim and windowsills the same color. So far I like it! SW Dover White is what I used, it's a nice creamy/white color, not too bright, not too creamy. lol

If you are able to choose exactly which colour to paint your cabinets, then I would match the trim. Do you have trim existing? Will you be replacing/repainting all the doors/trim in your house? We are completely renovating our craftsman style house from top to bottom- so I am painting everything with the same white Benjamin Moore cloud white. It's white with just a hint of cream in it. Was even able to match my wood blinds to it as it's so popular many manufacturers have very similar tones. (By the way my kitchen cabinets are stained- but the trim will remain white- except for the crown molding over the cupboards- will then do white CM everywhere else.)

Having said that- we are having a vanity custom made- but I think it will be a brighter white than the cloud white. I think in that bathroom, I will adjust the trim to match the vanity- but I'll wait until all the fixtures are in, and make the final decision then.

Another vote for matching the cabinets. Otherwise, you'd have to go for a big contrast in order to avoid it looking like you tried for a match and missed, and whites can easily go into yellow, pink and blue ranges that will completely undermine your efforts.

In my last home I had yellowy cream cabinets and white trim. At first it bothered me that they didn't match but I didn't like the idea of painting the trim, the colour of the cabinets would have been to yellow for the trim.

In my current home, we are putting in a white cabinets probably BM Cloud White and keeping the trim the same colour.

I think either way is fine, it's depends on your personal preference.
