Expanding the door way in a load bearing wall

We would like to expand the opening in a load bearing wall by about 2 feet. It is on the first floor of our house but the basement beneath is a huge open room so my husband is worried that it won't be supported. The end result would be an opening between 5 and 6 feet.

We recently removed a non load bearing wall between kitchen and dining room and created a great space but the opening between the dining and living room seems small and not proportioned well now. The load bearing wall is sooo long.

When we bought our house all the paper work said it was an A frame but the inspector when we bought it said it is more like a cape cod partially above ground basement. The 2nd floor has 3 bedrooms and my husband is worried my son's room will end up falling down!
