tearing down walls

Have three closets on the first floor of my Cape Cod home. It was build in late 1940s. I want to tear the wall down between the closets to make a large walk in. I had a lot of fun beating the plaster off of the two by fours, but my husband came home and caught me and told me that I can't tear the studs out because the house will come down. I understand about weight bearing walls and supporting beams, but this is just a closet wall, that short wall just about 4 feet long. This can't be supporting, can it? How can I tell if it is?
