'Heads up' on bankrupt businesses

I got an email this morning about redeeming any gift cards, etc from some businessess as they are filing for bankruptcy. I checked it out on snopes.com and maybe you should, also. Once on snopes' home page-but bankruptcies in the search box & click on 1st article.

I doubt I'll ever get a decent resolution from Fragrant Fields, but I'll feel better knowing that people will know what they're getting into when they order from them. Sorry for the copy and pasting between Garden Watchdog and here, I was just trying to get the word out...and having two little ones doesn't give me a lot of time to write different posts. :-D I know the plants will probably make it (unless they're diseased), but I shouldn't have to baby a pathetic looking plant back to health when I buy it full priced. That just makes me angry that Frangrant Fields does this. And I love their comment on Garden Watchdog "Look at all my good eBay feedback!". Notice that they don't sell ANY of the things I bought on eBay. I bought 2 hops, a Jessie's Sweet Pear Mint, an Iced Latte Mint, a Banana Mint and a Wild Berries Mint. They wouldn't dare sell anything that looks like that on eBay because they would get horrible reviews. After a certain number of bad reviews, eBay shuts your seller's account down. It wouldn't have even been that bad if it had only been one awful looking plant, but ALL SIX?! Come on. I hemmed and hawed for a month over buying those plants. The shipping was outrageous, but I really wanted them. Since it was a small company I trusted that they'd have good product. Fragrant Fields bamboozled me. :-/

cathi - My story is so long and sad I don't know where to begin to help you. But we are moving in to our "dream home " this week after 4 long heartbreaking years. We have a very similar story. We had not 1 but 2 builders go bankrupt after taking our money. The 2nd took so much out of construction budget we did not have enough to finish. After he left the bank told us it was up to us to finish. We literally (my husband & I) finished our home. We did everything after drywall and plaster. We did tile, hardwood floors, finish, paint, plumbing finish, fireplace, etc. This is a big , high end home & we were in there banging nails & setting tile. WE have our own business to run and 9 children still living at home whom we homeschool . We had the bank checking up on us every week, telling us we were not working fast enough, like we didn't have enough to do? We have personally been working on our home for the last year. We have not been living in 600 sq. ft. but 2200 sq. ft. with 9 children, 3 cats, a dog, well you know the story, too many in too little space. Our children have also grown up on this property. We have spent summers there in the barn, having bar-b-ques, planting gardens, harvesting , camping, etc. Some of our children don't know anything else but the "new house". We weren't given any compensation for our heartache. The bank put us with the builder and they pretty much said it was our tough luck. I have shared my trials here many times, you can do a search and read them. I know for us we couldn't walk away even though many suggested it. We just felt this was our home, we have fought & fought and now we are finally moving. We also had picked everything, many of the things were in storage on property just waiting to be installed. I know the emotional connection too well. I understand what you are going through. I can not give you advice but will tell you for us we had to go the whole distance. It was about fighting the good fight for us & our family. We sunk a ton of money in also that we will not recover, as our GC did not pay subs and we had to pay them again as they liened the property. Seriously it has been a mess. The upside.... .... we start moving tomorrow. Our children will see the fruit of long suffering, perseverance, prayer, patience, hope, faith, gratefulness, etc. All the things we want them to learn & understand. Is this path for everyone? I don't know. I know for this I am a better person. I have always believed "that which doesn't break us, makes us stronger". So for me not all was in vain. So as I have no advice I will keep you in my thoughts & prayers as this is a hard road. Please let me know what you decide and how it works out. You are welcome to email me for more specifics. LOL Well, lindsey, obviously it can be done....having an itinerary and not memorizing or committing the airline to membory for four months. My friend also also missed the news about the bankruptcy. That happens on sheep ranches. Even if she had known the name of the airline, it wouldn't have done her any good. Her money was gone and that's a shame. She works very hard for what she earns. I used to have a great travel agent but she retired. She booked our honeymoon, several anniversary trips and the big one to Hawaii on our tenth. But could a really good agent foresee this happening? With the exception of one trip, each was booked several months in advance for the best savings. We've considered booking an Alaskan cruise for early next fall but now I don't know. With the rising cost of not just fuel but everything else, even the most solvent airline could be out of business in just a few months. What's the name of your agent IG? Would she book for a person clean across the country? LOL Lori

For those of you still seeking bids on future work, please shop around. I honestly don't believe any contractor should ask for money upfront unless he wants to pay for a big ticket item like the cabinets, and then you can add them as the payee, too. If he wants money upfront to pay his employees, a red light should go off in your head. My husband NEVER asks a homeowner for money upfront. Even for materials. As someone mentioned earlier, contractors have charge accounts for materials, and payment isn't due for a month. If your contractor's business is solid, he'll have enough money in his payroll account to make sure his employees can get paid until your job is done. I know there are some situations where you're not going to be able to get around paying upfront (we had to have our driveway paved recently-they insisted on money upfront-I guess it would have been hard to take the asphalt back if my check was no good, huh?) :) I'm just saying, be careful with your money, and get as educated as you can. Raehelen, don't wait on your carpenter. Start nagging him. Make him put you first. He's floating on your money.

I don't see a problem posting this, as it helps us. I think Bestlawn's posting was something else. But am not sure.
I do know that Home Depot in Bismarck is closing along with many others.

Oops. I guess the post ended up getting "edited"...someone must have complained. I didn't follow the whole thing, just the begining...and this isn't the way it was entirely. LOL

Home Depot isn't on the list of bankrupt businesses tho its too bad that store is closing, I thought they said it didn't do the amount of business needed to stay open.

I didn't see anything about Home Depot in the link but the new store that just opened two or three years ago in our state capital is now going out of business. Stupid to put one right across the street from a Lowes.

I've noticed a lot of businesses in my small town have closed for lack of business: Coffee Beanery coffee cafe , another coffee shop, a tennis shop, an antique shop, a party goods store, a florist, a restaurant, a hardware store, a Curves for Women that lasted only 3 years. It's not a good time for mom and pop businesses.

I'm always surprised that they aren't bankrupt. Is it my imagination, or is there one on every corner? I'm surprised any of them stay in business! We live in a pretty rural area and there are 2 Curves within 2 miles of us, and another one within 4 miles. There are never any cars in the parking lots either. There is a real gym in the same area that costs a lot less.

kathy that seem to be the latest trend for lowes and home depot...to be either side by side or across the street...

both the home depots we go to are always busy...although i must admit for a quick fix item, we hit ace hardware...

Bakers Square restaurants are closing around here. "Kicking off April, Denver-based restaurant chain operator Vicorp Restaurants Inc., which Wind Point Partners and other co-investors closed a $225.5 million leveraged buyout of in 2003, filed for Chapter 11. Vicorp owns and operates the Village Inn and Bakers Square restaurants."

Also Mrs. Fields Cookies. "Mrs. Fields Famous Brands LLC is the latest PE-backed company to consider a Chapter 11 filing. The Salt Lake City-based cookie company, which is majority owned by Capricorn Holdings Inc., is weighing a prepackaged filing, the company said June 5."

Linens & Things is closing near my work -- right in the middle of a very busy area. Big signs promoting massive discounts, "selling everything to the walls!" -- I went inside and everything was 10% off -- not enough for me to be interested.

I guess with the housing slump, demand for new linens and other household items has also slumped. Oh well.
