finished pulling off plastic wrap

I completed all the quilting last night on the outside border of my current quilt where I marked the pattern on Glad press and seal. Then came pulling off all the plastic wrap pieces. It is strangely fun - kind of like popping bubble wrap! Now on to the binding!

Please explain how you used this - I did google and read some. Would you use this again?

This is my second time using it and I really like it. (I'm sure this sounds horrible to those who mark their quilt tops!) The press and seal is sticky on one side, but not too sticky. I just tear off a piece long enough to cover the design, lay it down on top of the design and trace it with a pen. (I tried a pencil but it does not show up well enough.) Then I peel it off of my design (I've been tracing them out of books - it can stick to paper and tear a little bit so I'd recommend making a photocopy of your design and working off of that.) and I stick it on the place I want it on my quilt. The plastic is easy to pull up and readjust so I was able to set the spacing right to have the design go all the way down the border, saw that I needed to add in one more shape on my longer sides, etc. Then I go back and readjust my safety pins so they are out of the stitching line. (I pin baste my quilt sandwiches.) Then I do the free motion quilting and peel off the plastic. The needle perforates it and it comes off relatively easy - you can see any pieces left because they are shiny and they have the darkness of your quilting line. There are times where it looks like the thread has had the ink rub off on it - but that is minimal. Someone said to trace out the pattern with permanent marker and then it would dry and not come off on the thread. I just used ball point pen. There are only a few places where it was harder to pull off - when I had a longer stitch so the plastic wasn't as perforated, but I just pull slowly and I have not had any stitches pull up with it. I've only recently been doing fmq instead of sitd, and this is my favorite way so far to mark a top. I fully realize this is not a professional way to do it, but for what I do it's been fun and exciting.

Keith, I will be real honest here, do you want your Greenhouse to be a success or failure? If you want it be successful, find the money to buy the greenhouse grade plastic. It will be well worth your time and money. I used plastic from the the hardware store and it degrades in about 5 months. After two months, it will start to rip and you will spend more $$ in tape than if you would have bought the greenhouse plastic. This year I built two hightunnels out of PVC pipe too. The only time the plastic ripped was when I had some failures of the pipe and it poked through it. I taped up both sides and it looks good as new! I think if you use the shrink wrap you will be wasting your time. If you spend the money on the frame, finish it off and buy the plastic. Just my thoughts, but I will never put anything but greenhouse grade plastic up again. In fact, I am buying another roll on Monday for my 4th high tunnel. Jay

Here is what I've been doing for 5 years and has worked like a charm every year. STYROFOAM CUPS use finger to punch hole in bottom of cup. fill with soil half full for tomato seeds. Get soil good and wet. plant one seed and sprinkle with a little soil on top of the seed. cover with store brand sandwich size ziploc bag with air holes in it. I put the cups in an old carrying tray from the days when I bought my plants and the nursery. last year started using the wooden trays that clementines come in as well. A trick I like with the tomato seedlings that is really good is filling the cup only half full. then as the seedling grows I add more soil to the top of the container to cover some of the stem. roots grow from where the soil was added and gives it an extra boost of roots. The other thing that I do, if the seedlings are getting too tall before I can get them all planted, (happens every year), is I take the tomato seedling out of the cup, add a little more soil to the bottom, then put the seedling back in the cup again. Gives it just a bit extra soil on the bottom for roots too. small containers like margarine, cottage cheese etc. I just slip them inside a store brand ziploc bag with slits in the bottom and top of of the bags and zip them shut. Instead of cutting out the center of the container to use to hold plastic wrap down, I cut up the container and use them to label my seed containers. I use a black paint pen to write with. USING PLASTIC WRAP I use the Glad Brand Press and Seal. it's still clear enough to get light through but not as clear as regular plastic wrap and is sturdier too. I use this to cover 9x13 aluminum pans, smaller aluminum pans, cake covers etc. I use this from April on and it won't hold up to NE winters and heavy snow cover and sleet and freezing rain. I seal the press and seal to the edges of the container, then make slits for air holes with a small razor knife and then the trick to keep the press and seal on is to use cheap spring type wooden clothes pins. I have found tons and tons of the wooden clothes pins in the dollar store. Just picked up more of them last week in packages of 72 clothes pins for $1. Hope this helps Fran

I don't really know what they're made of. A thick, strong reinforced cardboard? Something else? I just know that if you squeeze, drop or bang them on something, they don't bend, fold in, crease or anything. Oh, I'm sure they would have their limits. I wouldn't let the kids use them for sword-fighting, lol. They are wrapped in a very shiny paper that has a coating on it, almost as if they have been laminated. I accidentally had one sit in a bit of water once and it didn't harm anything but it was probably only in the wet for 3-5 minutes. I think they should last years unless they are super-abused somehow. I have no idea if they would fit in drawers like that. I just measured and the dimensions are 2.5x2.75" and they are 13.5" long. The parchment paper one is the same size around but is 17.5" long. The Costco/Kirkland brand is actually a brand called Stretch-Tite. You can find it by that name (same yellow/blue box) in other stores; but only the Kirkland roll has the slide cutter. Supermarket Stretch-Tite also only comes in the 250'-length so much smaller rolls. However, I noticed the Kirkland has recently changed; it is thinner and much harder to control now. Very similar to Saran Wrap these days. I believe the Freeze-Tite is thicker and less "clings to itself" so I may try switching to that. Thanks Karlene ~ I have a better understanding from your description.
Do you stick the marked Glad on after you pin baste or before? This sounds like a good way to audition some quilting designs before we commit to marking the quilt top. I have some books with designs, but I hate marking the tops.

I have used P&S and I marked mine with the cheap washable children's markers I bought from the $ store.
I like it better than trying to mark the quilt. My prob was getting the P&S from under the stitches I had to use tweezers.
It was a baby quilt and I was afraid I would pull the stitches loose.What length of stitch did you use??

I put the design on top of my quilt sandwich that is pin basted already - then I just reposition any pins that are in the stitching line.

Since it is fmq - the stitch length depends on my skill! It perforates the plastic better with a shorter stitch. With the little pieces left, I just scratch with my finger nail and it has pulled loose fairly easily.

I'm sewing the binding to the back right now and will put up a pic when done.

Okay, here it the graduation quilt - only 6 months late! In one of my posts over the summer, I mentioned that I was happy if a quilt turned out reasonably correct - this would be one of them. The original pattern was supposed to be an 8 pointed star, but due to an angle cutting error/design opportunity it became a 6 pointed star, which works - thus - reasonably correct!

It is beautiful - you should be pleased. What are the red things - confetti? can't tell on my computer monitor. That is a very large quilt to quilt. You did great - thanks for the Glad Wrap instructions - I am going to try it. I am sure she will love it.
