Heather in Ohio are you ok?

Heather, I know you are up near Toledo. Are you and yours ok? Please let us all know. I know you don't post much, but I hope you read this.

To be precise, Scotch or ling heather is actually Calluna vulgaris. This is a plant that is native to much of Europe and is quite cold hardy, generally listed to USDA zone 4 and sometimes to 3 if provided with adequate snow cover. There is only one species in this genus. Members of the genus Erica are commonly referred to as heaths and there are many species native to a much wider geographic spread, including South Africa and the Mediterranean, and a number of hybrids as well. Ericas in general tend to be less hardy than Callunas and some are quite tender. Erica carnea is arguably the hardiest of this genus and is often planted in the same locations as Calluna - E. cinerea has a much more limited adaptability. Visually, there is not too much difference between the two genus other than foliage - callunas have scale-like leaves and ericas have needle-like foliage - and a difference in bloom times. Callunas tend to be summer bloomers while ericas are winter bloomers. Both come in a range of flower colors - white, pink, purple, and deep magentas. Callunas also offer a wide variation in foliage color as well with greys, golds and all tones of green. Many cultivars will take on color in the winter or cold weather as well, turning intense shades of orange, bronze or red. Some offer very brightly colored new growth in spring also - "spring tips" is what they are referred to in the nursery trade and come in shades of bright yellow, chartreuse, coral and red. Both ericas and callunas prefer to grow in acidic, organically rich soils although some ericas are more lime tolerant. They like sun, do poorly in much shade and need consistent moisture but very good drainage. I would not consider them particularly drough tolerant. Just a note of caution: grocery stores and florists will often offer pots of blooming purple 'heather' with tall, upright flower sprays. This is Erica persoluta, a South African native. hey those darn kids and hosta meetings do get in the way ... on weekends some times... and there is that national hosta society tour coming in 3 weeks ... please forgive me for being tardy ... as i note in nearly all your postings.. thanks for the effort it takes to capture, edit and post the pics .... i am getting near the point where i will have to start editing out plants... and as of now.. am hard pressed to remove and kill something i paid good money for ... ken PS: i SWEAR I RESPONDED to this one.... but here is what i though i typed here: wow... i am adding... daylily ... iris .. sedums.. all kinds of companion plants to the large conifer beds.. in hopes of creating the variations in texture and color .. that dream being created by your pix of the heathers.. and bloom's book similar usages ... and now you tell me its all gone ... just wow ... what carp.. lol ... but i would like to see the old beds once more.. in their prime ... thanks ken ps: what i am using is based i what i can gratuitously beg from other garden folks.. rather than an unlimited budget on companion plants ... EVERYONE has an iris of some variation.. and the foliage is so different than the conifers ... heathers are extremely rare and very borderline in my neck of the woods ... read that part.. expensive

I would return this Heather also if it is not zone hardy here. Before buying any Heath/Heathers you really need to know your soil PH. You can buy a device at the box stores and they are reasonable - around $5. Soil PH will tell you what type you can have. I am typical Ohio with clay soil and neutral soil bordering on alkaline. I can only use certain Heath's here but mine look great and to boot they are on my SW side so lots of sun and open to quite a bit of winter winds. I did not amend my soil. I lost a few the first winter but it's been great since then. Why battle soil amendments forever when you can just buy some that are alkaline tolerant. I got mine online for a source of what I needed. Cher

Movement of citrus trees in Ohio is OK

I contacted the department of agriculture and found out that I is OK to move citrus trees in Ohio. There are no quarantines but they ask that you check for pests and disease free trees. Thank you so much for asking about us. I thought to make a post about it but then never did.

The tornado missed us by about a mile. The last I heard, they said they thought it was an F3. The odd thing is THAT storm didn't even seem all that bad to us. There was one that came through later that night that was HORRIBLE, though the tornado siren went off, no tornadoes touched down that time.

Anyway, I haven't been out and about to see all of the homes that were damaged. They have a lot of the roads closed off anyway. The only thing that I went to see was the police station and the boys' school, both of them are ruined. I tried to take pictures but they had yellow tape up and you weren't allowed to cross it, so most of my picture attempts weren't real good.

There is a meeting tonight to talk about how people can help. They have some churches opened for people who lost their homes. They have been collecting food and clothing at various different places. Where we live on the opposite side of town, you would never guess that a massive tornado ripped through the other side of town. When you see the devastation though, it is completely heartbreaking. Right now the death toll is at 7. I'm not sure if they are still searching for people or if everyone has been accounted for.

I'm glad you are all ok. We will be going up to MI, taking 23N Fri. evening for the weekend. I'm sure it will be a shock to see the damage. We will be going right thru Dundee, MI, that also got hit. I hope the roads will be open. We will be taking the motor home, and there are a lot of streets we aren't allowed on due to weight restrictions, so detours are not good.

Hopefully by then the roads will all be open. If you are able to, go up a little further north off of 23 and go down 795 to get a glance at the police station and high school. It won't be a pleasant sight seeing adventure but jaw dropping to say the least.
