textured ceiling, no asbestos issues

In order to remodel our kitchen, in one area we are going to tear out a closet. In another we are taking down a wall that is 3 feet wide. This is going to leave places in the ceiling which will need to be repaired. In my limited experience, it seems that repairs to textured ceilings are very visible. (btw, the texture is not full-fledged popcorn or cottage cheese. It is a smaller texture than that but still has a stippled look, not orange peel.)

There is no "stopping point" in the ceiling from the kitchen, across the living room, and through the foyer. The kitchen planner has suggested installing a fake beam between the living room and the kitchen to give a stopping point and then totally redoing the kitchen ceiling. I'm not excited about that. Our ceilings are only 9 feet. I think a beam that is sufficiently large will look too low. Otherwise, the beam may look skimpy.

Does anyone have a technique for repairing a textured ceiling that doesn't end up looking like a big tacky patch?
