Sandy relief

I have a (sort-of) computer! Still trying to rescue mine.

If anyone has some old UFOs they will never finish and would be willing to donate, I will be quilting some to send to victims of Sandy. I have batting and muslin for backing. Quilting will be quick and simple, binding done by machine, but they will be finished with love. They will go to and be distributed by Project Linus. Send me an e-mail if you need my address.

Donna I'm glad they moved your mother closer.... that will be much easier on you! Calliope, I was curious about what machine you had too.... though not wanting to dis a brand publicly is a rare quality indeed! I specifically did not sew today. I needed a break so I didn't get burned out after the last project that consumed me.... and I had to catch up on errands and house work. I cleaned up a weeks work of paper peicing scraps (had to empty the vacuum 6 times and that was after sweeping the big chunks with a broom!), ordered 20 bobbins (my machine doesn't take class 15 or 66 and I'm always out of empty bobbins and the filled ones are never the right color), and watched 3 videos about sewing/embroidery machines! So I did sewing related stuff even though I didn't quilt :o) I went to Lowes and bought one of those small fake electric stove heater things.... felt like the right thing to do as cold as it's been lately and I can't have the real thing in an apartment. The flame looks pretty real and it will be nice to put near the machine when I'm working on a project.... The heater part isn't as good as my tower heater and it doesn't have a remote, but it's not bad for under 100 dollars. I also made a pot of chili (I haven't cooked in forever) and accidentally dumped the cranberry sauce in thinking it was tomato sauce.... remind me not to cook at 4 AM anymore please. :o) Kate, you haven't chimed in yet, but did you get your Juki yet? Is the Elna back home safe and sound? I imagine (hope) you'll start a thread about the Juki when you begin to use it... Have a great weekend everyone...

Annie I think you'll have to agree that the areas effected by Sandy today cannot be compared to storms of 1938 or 1944? Nor can Sandy be compared to Irene, Floyd, Gloria, Donna, Carol etc. The infrastructure (transportation, electricity, gas) of today are MUCH larger and more complex than in 1938 or 44. The areas are more populated and more developed along the coast than 1938 or 44. Thankfully today building codes have improved and are better designed to allow structures to withstand higher wind thresholds. Fortunately technology has advanced as well, alerting us to storms sooner than in 1938 or 44 allowing those in harms way to evacuate when told, or for those who remain, to become better prepared for what may come. Yes, these areas experience snowstorms and blizzards and probably have (or should have) alternative heat sources - allowing them to stay warm if the electricity goes out for an extended period of time during a snowstorm. The sources helping the area today have done this before. Perhaps not for your particular area, but have on other occasions under much worse conditions than those of Sandy. I think people have to realize that it is going to take a long, long, long time to rebuild - and some may never. I think the important thought for those affected is to hold on. That help is out there and on the way - from all over the country. It just may not happen as quickly as they'd think or like, but its on the way. People need to pull together to stay strong and to stay safe.

I just peeked at that "Charity Navigator" and WOW....if you look at the money the RC receives....it is almost like our National budget....I cannot comprehend those numbers. What I do remember is that when Elizabeth Dole ( I think) was the 'director' or something, she was paid more than a $million $$$$ per year. WHAT'S WITH THAT???? Our local Good Will 'person', administrator or whatever, in our little valley where unemployment is chronically high, and income is chronically low, is paid a million a year. WHAT'S WITH THAT,too? It just 'bothers' me when I am made aware of those facts. I was a RC volunteer during the Vietnam War, and did Service to Miliary families where I did not get or expect even my phone bill to be reimbursed. What IS this "profiit" making, or 'highly paid' volunteering or 'career making' inside a Non-Profit all about? Beats me. It kinda makes me want to hand over my money to the local shelter providing meals to under-fed children and out-of-work parents.....but then we are supporting two unemployed adult children and it just frosts me the way that all of their efforts are just not being successful. End of Rant. PS. Our adult children are not dead beats. DD left a abusive marriage of 20 years and her DH has their 140 acre farm (aqnd 50 rare horses) that they put over $1 million into in 2004; it has cost her thousands in attorney fees for a mere 20,000 that he pays her whenever he feels like it....unless she goes back to court again. DS, almost the same...wife has $600,000, 5,000 sq ft with pool home, in the high rent district that he bought and is owned free and clear.... that divorce is not even filed and the writing is on the wall that she will get it all as well as custody of autistic son who recently qualified for 'lifetime' care due to the story she claimed to the agencies and system that she learned to manipulate. (maybe I over stated that a touch...we are just learning of it) Yep....WE are middle class Americans, who have served our country and our state, raised good citizen children who have never had problems with crime...ever;... have alwayts paid our "fair share" and cared about the 'least among us', and still voted today to fund two swimming pools and recreation improvements to benefit the less affulent children of our town by adding to our taxes. My Rant for the year, I think. And, here is where I usually hit the "delete" and go back to bed.

Thank you my friends, you are the best. I'll be able to get 3 from the GFG pieces I got at the retreat. Gotta wash the muslin then I can get started quilting.

Ok, so I cut the fabric for the borders last night and did it wrong. No problem, I'll just take care of it in the morning. What happened this morning has me so upset! But, it really isn't as devastating as I feel about it. DH painted a picture of Jaycie....I'm barely awake yet and he's asking for a box at least 13 inches square and maybe 2 inches deep. He couldn't find one, so I get up from my comfy chair and start looking. I find an empty pizza box and he takes it to wrap it up covering it with heavy brown paper. When he brings it in from wrapping it, the paper is all wrinkled and I'm sure would be demolished by the post office. So, I tell him to cut the wrapping off and I'd wrap it for him. So, I get up from my comfy chair again.....it went well and I had him watch me so he'd know what to do the next time. Anyway, that got me all out of my morning routine and now I don't have the border on and 6 packages ready that I had planned to mail. Sorry about the rant, but at least I don't feel as tense now.

Beverly, Don't forget to show pics when you get the quilts made. This is one top that I'm sending to you...minus the cat.

I haven't even taken pictures of 2 other tops and need to get the blocks put together on a 4th one. That may be at a later date.

Sharon, you are awesome, thank you so much. Our local Project Linus coordinator said they will be sending for at least 6 months. I will send a few at a time as I finish them. I will put a label on the back with the donor's name, a short message to the recipient. Pictures will certainly be posted.

You are very welcome! It will help in my count-down of getting UFO's (even if they're just the tops) out of my house this year. This brings my count to 9.

The cat gets car sickness every time so she would be having a big problem.

What a wonderful way to clean out the closets! This is so thoughtful of you, Beverly. I'll see what I can whip out. I don't have any UFO's, but I have some 12" blocks I can get together into at least a lap top.

Did y'all hear about the cat who flew from Ohio to Orlando in a lady's luggage? I bet the trip home was a lot more luxurious for Ms. Kitty. LOL

Thanks, Donna, and I did hear about that cat in the luggage. I cannot imagine how it got through being scanned or heard meowing.

As I was putting borders on one of the quilts I'm sending, I remembered why I had abandoned it! Picture later....my eyes are done for the day.

Ooo! Pretty. Funny, I especially like the pink and blue one and those aren't usually the colors I seek out. Something special about the mix of lights and darks!

Beverly, My three tops were mailed out this afternoon.

Linda (quiltnhen) The strips came from a jelly roll but I don't remember where I got it from. Should I do that pattern again, I'll make the side triangls from a very large square and cut corner to corner so there won't be a bias on the outside!

Please excuse any typos as my eyes are still dilated from being at the opthamologists......he's sending me to a cornea specialist.

Sharon, I love the layout of the blue and white quilt. It is stunning! I am saving it to perhaps someday copy. When I first looked at it, I thought for a minute that it had a cat silhouetted on top. You've probably seen the scrappy pattern with black silhouettes of cats scattered around it. It is on my mental to-do list.

Very generous of you girls to pass on all these tops and quilts to this cause.
