WAH! kitchen's not done and already things are breaking!

So, tonight I get home from work to my still unfinished kitchen and find that a critical, but silly, little bit of plastic has broken in my refrigerator. Now the top/front of the meat/deli drawer won't close. It's one of those stupid little bits that can't be easily replaced because it's part of a much larger piece of plastic which would require dismantling the refrigerator, and probably can't be acquired anyway. Yes, I can probably duct tape the thing, but really, the fridge is less than a year old (just about the amount of time this reno has been going on...)

I think one of the worst things about this nightmare kitchen reno is that it has dragged on so long that I never really am gonna have that "ah" moment of moving in to a beautiful new kitchen. My soapstone counters have been in for 5 months. They already have plenty of "patina". My new Capital range has already got a good start on a crud build-up, despite all efforts to keep it pristeen. The limestone floor has multiple permanent spots and etches from the blueberries my son consistently spills on the floor (and doesn't "see" to pick them up) when making smoothies. I fear that by the time all the cabinets are actually finished and installed and all my food and kitchen gadgets are put away, the kitchen won't even faintly resemble a new one.

Sigh.

And who wants to live in a NEW kitchen?

Pre-broken in. What a great idea. Now you don't have to worry about it. The last time we did our kitchen, the knobs that were supposed to match the cabinets came in a bit darker because of the cross-grain. I called them pre-filthed knobs. I had four young children at the time. Worked for me.

A bit of hosta lore with respect to this forum; My mother the late Pauline Banyai was trying hard back in the late 1950's to build up our home garden soil, which was quite sandy loam with a clay layer about 1-2 ft underneath (southeast Michigan typical soil). Not good for perennials! Living in the city, we were fortunate to have an undeveloped lot next door which my mother knew the owner of. She convinced the city of Madison Heights to dump their leaves gathered in the Fall on that lot - it was many dump truck loads, leaving a pile about 5-7 ft tall as the leaves were not compacted. Her 4 boys and the neighborhood kids proceeded to tromp the leaves down, leaving a 2-3 ft playing field over the winter. The next Spring the heavy winter snow had helped it drop another 1-2 ft as it composted down, while us kids continued to play on it. That summer my father began hand tilling that composted leaves into the garden, which took him a couple of years to complete. Then they started it all over again. Those who visited Mom's garden always wondered how the soil was so rich and soft; just work composted leaves in for a couple of years! Peter Ruh pushed that concept further and build his new hosta beds in compost piles which he built for purpose. I moved to Delaware and built my hosta beds in mushroom soil, which was dreamland! I've often wondered why people who have prep sinks next to their ranges/cooktops don't put in a potfiller right above it in lieu of a regular faucet. That way it could do double duty. There are potfillers that are mixers (hot and cold water -- see link). Is there some obvious downside to this idea that I'm not seeing? (Wouldn't be the first time.) I suppose one reason I've never seen it done is that so few people seem to have prep sinks next to their range/cooktops. In my upcoming renovation, the ONLY place to put a prep sink is right next to the stove, with a wall behind both. By installing a potfiller instead of a faucet, I could push the thing against the wall whenever I wanted to get it out of the way, i.e. when I wanted to use the sink as an extension of my prep area (with the help of an inset cutting board), which I will probably do often, given the limited space in that area. Just for future reference when someone else does a stone accent like this. The contractor really should have deferred putting the stone on the hood until whatever was going to go on the wall was decided. He probably should have insisted that it be done this way. It's not your fault Soloman, he should know, you shouldn't be expected to If the tile or whatever treatment was going on the wall was done first, the flat edge or flat cut edge of the tile is butted against the flat edge of the drywall on the hood. Then the stone is put on the hood after with the uneven edges overlapping the tile. That way you are not scribing and cutting something to fit against an uneven edge.

Is the fridge still under warranty? Yet another hassle to deal with, but probably better than duct tape forever.

Much easier than having to invite a troop of girl scouts to bake in your kitchen before you can make a mess. :)

Well that's just not fair! When your kitchen reno is finally done, you should buy new wine glasses and a great bottle of champange (or sparkling cider) and christen your new kitchen! All the parts and pieces might not be brand new, but the overall kitchen will be...and that's what counts! :)

I can feel you on wanting the big reveal moment. Dh & I would talk about what our first meal will be from the new kitchen, however, once I got the wall oven in, I started to cook in it. Then the sink got hooked up, and I cooked more. Finally, the single induction burner I ordered arrived and I have been making dinners most nights. So much for having a special ribbon cutting ceremony and special "first" meal, lol. Then again, when we envisioned the first meal in our completed kitchen it was probably expected that it would be around the date I made the first meal in my wall-oven-only,-not-even-counters kitchen....sigh...

The fridge should still be under warranty - DEFINITELY get that fixed! Do it ASAP - do not settle for Crazy Glue - you should expect your appliances to last for years without needing "Handyman" fixes!

Pretty much all the bits and pieces of a refrigerator, even the plastic ones, are available, and as noted, yours is under warranty too.

When the time comes, a good deep clean - hire someone if your finishes are not delicate - will have your kitchen sparkling.
