So, I found this shelving unit, has the file cabinet with it. Kind of pricey for the budget, but it works. I'm even going to suggest 2!

For my work room, I took my two old black lateral files and painted the bodies with cabinet coat, wallpapered the drawer fronts, and Mod Podged them. My first such project - which scared me to death, but I, too, was on a budget for this, and I think they turned out pretty well.

Or paint an old filing cabinet or roll-around from the thrift store.

The Container Store has the usual 2-drawers but in some fantastic colors.

Bronwynsmom - I love what you posted on your desk. Would love to see the complete set up? How does the desk surface sit on top of the filing cabinet?

If you use a basic one, maybe use the Rustoleum spray paint to get a more modern color? I used the spray paint on the plastic outdoor chairs, and it was very easy to use and came out great.

Bee, was shopping locally for fast and inexpensive not an option? Or ordering ready-to-ship online? The experience alone would be worth a bit of hassle working with a non-dream client. A happy client is a recommendation to X friends, family, coworkers, etc. Bigger and better things.

It's one thing to decorate for ourselves, and quite another to do it for someone else. Homes are such a personal thing, and maybe even more so for people that can't decorate or visual on their own. Then you add money to the mix and it become more complicated.

Have you considered taking a few interior design classes or enroll in a credible ID course to earn a degree? All classes/courses are not equal, but even FIDM and AAU offer online classes. You would fulfill your dream, plus look at the knowledge gained.

tandemcha, didn't see your question, but looks like allison got it. The desk isn't available until August. Pottery Barn had one similar but they just d/c'd it.

Little more background, the client did not want anything that friends would be able to get their hands on, (all unique and exclusive items) but he didn't want to spend very much money at all, and he wanted it all in 20 days. (furnishing a complete home) There were a lot more red flags that this was not going to be an ideal client and actually I don't think I would want the referrals that might come my way from him, based on his attitude and what I was picking up in his tone. I'm happy to say my business is doing well, so I don't really need the negative energy from clients that are too demanding. My other clients are not so hung up on the "where" the items are purchased, which is a good thing.
