Alisande - Did you survive your opening?

How did it go last night? I hope the opening of your show was a wonderful success and that you were able to enjoy your big night. Let us know how everything went.. maybe even post of few photos if you're up to it.

Thanks, Maire Cate. I did enjoy it, although that seemed unlikely by the time I had the car packed with food and wine to bring to the event. It was SO hot yesterday, hazy and extremely humid--difficult conditions for making any kind of physical effort.

Then when I arrived and started setting things up things got off to an . . . unusual start. Using a corkscrew to open a bottle of red wine, I managed to break the cork, leaving about a quarter of it in the bottle. I decided to push it through, into the bottle. (I've since learned this is something people try only once.) When I did, the wine sprayed up like a fountain, covering me and the table with droplets of red. It was in my hair, and worse than that, it was all over my pure white linen top. I grabbed napkins and started blotting. I think I was mumbling, "This didn't happen . . . this didn't happen . . . "

Amazingly, the little red spots blotted up nicely, so that they weren't noticeable unless I pointed them out. (Which I didn't do except with my daughter and my best friend.)

As I'd hoped, adrenalin carried me through. As long as I was "on," with people to talk to, I felt fine. I drank water and nibbled on pretzel sticks. I haven't counted up the number of people yet, but I know we had at least 30. Almost all were my friends, so that gave it a nice party atmosphere.

I didn't take a single picture, but I'm meeting my granddaughter there this afternoon and will snap some photos then. She couldn't come yesterday because she had to work. I was happy to see my daughter arrive, though. I was afraid she wouldn't be able to make it because she was stuck at O'Hare (with no A/C) much of the night before. But she got there, and stayed till the end to help me clean up.

As for sales.........ha! Just one of the smaller ones was sold. I wasn't expecting any sales, so I wasn't disappointed.

I woke up in a sweat again last night. I sure hope this isn't an indication that the fever was back. I especially hope this because I exchanged a lot of hugs and kisses last night. Most people knew I'd been sick, but figured I'd recovered, I guess. And, for those few hours, so did I. :-)

You poor thing! Hopefully the fever during the night was just due to exhaustion.

There's nothing much worse than a stomach ailment, it's true. Try to rest as much as possible, willya?

I had a flu once that made my stomach hurt every time I ate something, for about 6 months. So you may need a lot of time to get over this, but I'm sure you will!

Congrats on your sale, glad you managed to have fun in spite of not being 100%!

I am going into my third year, and when I started I started with all new materials. Last year, my second, I switched out a few of the worst looking frames and replaced the foundation. Last summer's honey production was poor. I took no honey, although I could have gotten a few pounds, I didn't get around to it. So the bees went into winter with some stores, in addition to my keeping them in sugar water from early fall to as late as I could get out the hive. My beekeeper/supplier said that most of the honey producers here west of Boston had a terrible crop: way too much rain way too late into the season. We did insulate the hive: made a rigid insulation box to fit right over the hive. No insulation on top, and bottom space with mouse guard open. However, frigid weather came before christmas (very early) and the insulation was not put on by then. Their sugar water supply was in, though. In January and Feb. as I said extended periods of subzero weather. In January we have always had a "January thaw". This year, not. Inspecting the hive on a warm day two weeks ago, the brood chamber looked good: healthy dark, drawn foundation, no dead brood. The upper foundation showed a mistake I made early in the season. When I took out a couple of frames for the can of sugar water that comes with a new package, I never removed the can and replaced the frames. Those bees did what comes naturally and made a beautiful mess of burr comb. in that open space between the frames in upper box. But, the hive was happy and healthy. I fed the bees beginning in mid fall. The sugar water was not in a big can; I think it was a 16 oz. jar. They emptied one and a half between late fall and spring. Since I did not get out to hive for quite a while, I don't know when they stopped feeding, which would give a good indication of when they died. But they did not get to empty the second jar. I am pretty sure they did not have mites in the fall. I did not medicate for mites, however. The queen was in the upper chamber, surrounded by a good number of bees. All dead. Obviously. They really looked frozen- I mean embalmed. I At that point I took 6 pounds of honey and left, I guess, 3 on partially filled foundations. I did not have a single full foundation of honey. Markedly less than my first year. And yes, I have one hive, and my supplier recommends that I get another, too, and have two. I'm not too discouraged, but my husband feels really bad. Now that sentimentality surprises me! He really thinks we killed them somehow. I don't. Hope I haven't tried your patience with my missive. That's the story of Marie's bees 08. Mara, did you read above that the star jasmines sold today in nurseries are likely to be the Madison variety even if not labeled as such? It seems when a superior cultivar is introduced and it's not possible to tell the difference by looks alone that it will be propagated rather than the old variety and if not named no royalties have to be paid. I was told that by someone in the nursery business when I was searching for Madison without success. I tend to believe it seeing how my neighbor James' plants were more hardy than what I had. Did the above ground stems on yours split? Keep us posted on whether they return and I will do the same.

Taigen, I am so glad to hear (and see) this!! I know exactly how you feel......they really are so much fun to do. The iridescent background added something new and exciting, and makes me wonder what other variations on the background we could try. I especially like your first one. You'll find the process a lot easier when you get your macro lens. I was told to use a tripod, and I'm sure that facilitates things, too, but my tripods are old and can't accommodate a camera facing straight down. That's okay.........I enjoy a challenge, at least the kind that involves cameras. :-) Well, now you've got me wanting to try some more. And since the sun came out as I typed that last sentence, I just might do that. Thanks so much for sharing these! Susan

Obviously, I missed something! Alisande, what did you show? I'm glad it went well - are you laughing about the wine drops on your linen yet? I hope that fever has let go, that tonight you will have a long restorative sleep.

Thanks! Sherrmann, it's my photography show. Here's the invitation.

Plus a dear friend had more postcards made up with this picture on it. She brought them last night so people could take one home as a souvenir.

I washed the linen top this morning, and I think it looks okay.

I'm glad you made it through the evening even with the wine mishap. Now I'll keep my fingers crossed that your white blouse also survives.

If it makes you feel any better about spraying red wine all over yourself I'll tell you what I did when my husband was newly employed. We were out to dinner with the senior partners and everyone was enjoying a beautiful meal at a rather exclusive restaurant. As I reached for my glass I accidentally bumped by husband's elbow causing him to spill red wine all over the tablecloth. Then when I tried to use my napkin to mop up the mess I knocked over my red wine too. It was such a mess the servers whisked away our plates and laid a new tablecloth. They were quite efficient at it and manage to minimize the intrusion but I'm sure my face turned a shade of red that matched the wine. I cannot drive hear the name of that restaurant without remembering my embarrassment.

Are you going to try calling the doctor tomorrow to ask about this lingering malady?
