Vacation quilt shops

We just returned from a trip to New England and I had fun visiting some of my old haunts. The first stop was in Gloverville, NY. at 'Gloversville Sewing Center'. They were having their September sale!! Then we had to stop in Keene, NH. at the 'New England Fabrics'. I was reluctant to go there because it wasn't great the last time but IT has improved, I even found a new stitch in the ditch foot for my Janome that I had been wanting. Then--it was on to Oqunquit, Me.. We spent 4 days there and ofcourse I couldn't miss going the 'Knights'. It is hard to find as it is tucked back aways but worth it. I discovered them last year when we were there. THEN the best of all!! On our way back west we went to KEEPSAKE QUILTING in Central Harbor, NH. That place is like dying and going to heaven. I think they relocated into a different part of the plaza as they weren't as I remember them but if anything they are bigger and better. I was in awe at the amount of selections. It is a good thing that I live a distance away or I would be in the poorhouse. My husband is so good about my addition. My bible is the 'Quilters Travel Guide'. I keep it in the car everyplace we go.

Well, I am back now so have to use some of that delious fabric that I said I wouldn't buy. Jayne

Gosh Jayne, it sounds as though you had a wonderful time! A friend of mine has one of the 'Quilters Travel Guide', and when we go on a road trip it's her job to bring it along!

I've never been to New England, but hope to take a trip there soon. How was the Fall Foliage? Did you see a lot of color?

I have almost every Keepsake Quilting catalog I've ever gotten. Someday I'll get to the store (I'm on the west coast) packing a dozen credit cards and a sleeping bag!

I'm sorry it took so long for me to post, I had a family crisis that turned out very well!!!! You must register and go to the members page, there is a list of the shops (over 100) that participate in the shop hop. The list keeps track of the shops you have visited. The shops will give you a clue on the home page where the bunny is hiding. Most are very easy clues!! When you go to the page where the bunny is hiding there will be a bunny with 'you found it' and you click on him to register for prizes and the quilt blocks are hidden on this page in various shops. The purpose of the hop is to get you to purchase from the shops of course, but the quilt is cute!!! It took me about an hour to find all 13 blocks. Some of the shops are having good sales! Rosa

Hi there. I don't know, first hand, of any quilt shops there but perhaps if you googled "ottawa fabric shops" you may get some hits. There are some members here from Canada...I am one of them and I'm thinking I am also from your province.....but not sure if there are members from Ontario. Hope you have a great trip. I have never been to Ottawa but I do have in-law relatives there and they say that it is a beautiful place. On another note....if you are looking to increase your fabric stash, you might want to try Kijiji.....I have seen fabric for sale there and I have sold fabric using that site. Wow! thank you all so much, did not expect such wonderful insights into this question. Once again you just proved that quilters are a very generous group. I am in the extremely early phases of thinking about this. And I am NOT convinced this is the move I want to make. I am retired and will start drawing SS next year, thanks to calliope for mentioning that...would owning a business affect my benefits? One of my thoughts was I would not need the shop to support myself, just to support itself. Any profit would be extra. But SS is something to think about, and will need to be looked into. Many many thanks to quiltpartner for her detailed response. You certainly have a grasp on this subject and I deeply appreciate the time you took to respond. Your points are well taken especially about the "difficult" customers. I know they all can't be as nice as us!! LOL I had already decided that this could not be done without an initial investment of at least $20,000. Good to know that $25 would be more realistic. I live in a town that had a quilt shop that closed about a year ago. The owner had a wonderful shop (to me anyway) but for a variety of reasons, she sold out and closed. We have two active guilds of about 100 members each in this town. We have two options to purchase fabric, Hancocks and Hobby Lobby or drive for 45 minutes. I think combining the quilt shop with another "business" would be a good idea. Not sure about the liquor store though, although I think it could be successful....."buy a bottle get a fat quarter free" promotion. but perhaps a bar/quilt shop combo, catering to the ladies only. Something to think about. LOL There are a lot of retirees in this area....so a place near one of the retirement homes might be something to look at. Anyway I have a LOT of research to do but it was great getting your prospectives. Will let you know what I come up with. Again my deepest appreciation for your responses. Murphy

Thank you for sharing nanajayne. I am going to CT next month (I live on the west coast but grew up in NE). I wasn't quilting when I lived in CT so I looking forward to going to some NE shops. If anyone has any other shops "not to miss" I would love hearing about them.

I do enjoy visiting quilt shops and the Quilters travel Guide is very helpful.
The color washn't as nice as I had expected except around Clingman's Notch, NH. It was very impressive there. I think the dry weather has caused some of the leaves to fall before their time..
Sharon, I like the idea of the sleeping bag. Maybe next time. Jayne

You sound like you had lots of fun...I have lots of family near Gloverville NY down in Herkimer, Little Falls etc. Next time I go up that way I am gonna have to check out all the shops.

The color has not passed, Jayne, it has hardly started yet. We have not been dry here in NH, we have been warm and that's what delays the turning of the leaves. It takes cold nights to makes them turn. It is now peak color in the very north, moderate in the central part of the state and very low in the south. You didn't miss it, you were too early. Sorry. This is going to be a superior year for color in northern New England!

Stitchbystitch, how far north will you be coming? I know many wonderful quilt shops all over NH if you're interested. I grew up in CT, too, btw. :)

Thank you for your response nassongrad. Most likely I will be in the CT, RI area. The main reason I am going back is to help out family & spend some time with my daughter. It is about 4+ hours to Center Harbor NH from Waterbury CT which is where I grew up & will be for the most part. What part of CT were you from? I am really intrigued with trying to get to NH....maybe I need a bit more convincing :)It also would be nice to meet quilters from the forum who live in the NE area. Thank you again.

I am sorry to have missed the color and the weather was beautiful. Maybe next year. My family originated in CT. West Hartland and Barkhamsted area. I have visited and traced my roots with the help of some wonderful people there. A lovily state with some fine quilt shops. Jayne
