Don't have a mantel, so a picture of Alex's old room transformed into a girl's room for the exchange students coming next month. I just can't decide on the color for the curtains, purple was my first choice, but Lauren thinks it will be too much purple. She thinks, white, black or gray, preferring black. I think it would be too much black since all the furniture is black and there is a mirror on the one wall that I spray painted black too.

My mantle

You get an extra bonus...you can see me in the picture, too :o) The mirror in this picture belonged to my grandparents..they got it as a wedding gift way over 150 years ago....I didn't have a place to hang it, so I had it built into the fireplace surround...don't know what I will do for sure if we ever have to move....or what to tell our kids when we are gone...It "might" be able to be removed without damage, I'm not sure, though.

I'm too behind this morning to take a picture of my mantle. :-)

Here are some shells from the beach and some old vintage ornaments in a jar. These set in my sun room on the buffet.

Maybee, what a beautiful mantle. It and the mirror look like they were made for each other. The mirror is a treasure for sure.

I don't have a mantle in this house, but this picture is of what you would have found on the one in the last house.

We don't have a mantle but here's a pic of my kitchen window with some peonies I picked in the garden yesterday. My sister gave me the rustic old spoons chimes.

love all the beautiful mantles & collections & stuff, but Kim's birds (flamingos? peacocks?) are just delightful.

Those are peacocks and I also collect flamingos. Forever searching for the matching bowls. I got a pink bowl but it doesn't match. I also got a yellow bowl hoping to find the yellow bird.

Kath, I agree with Lauren. Gray or white would be my choice.

Kath-I would say a soft gray.I think white would be too stark and black would make the furniture disappear.
Love the birds,love the wind chimes and love,love,love the peacocks.Kim,I have a pair of flamingos that are about the same scale as your peacocks.They were my mother's and she had them for as long as I can remember,which makes them VERY old!LOL I'll bet they were made in about the same era as yours.I love them.i know they were probably cheap dime store stuff but they are a treasure to me.I really like that mirror behind the peacocks too.

kim_okla....I don't know anything about your antiques. Why do those birds have "matching" bowls? How were they displayed in the old days?

I picture the set of birds and the console bowl on a buffet, dining table or big old tv cabinet. They are probably California pottery, some are marked USA.

They are 17" tall so too tall for the china cabinet. Some are filled with sand or something, I don't know about that. I've resisted uncovering the bottom.

I've gotten all of those on ebay. It's the thrill of the hunt.
