You can request an invitation here.

I have a couple numbers converted from Grand Central but I've never seen anything about being able to invite people like when Gmail started.

Everyone on Google Voice was supposed to be given three invitations, though they said people wouldn't receive them all at once.

I didn't use Grand Central, and didn't get an invite to Voice, but I'd love to have one. I know they're selling invitations on eBay, so I might buy one for a few dollars.

Here is a link that might be useful: 3 invites per user on Google Voice

Any young ladies feeling like you don't have a voice?

Chiming in to say 1) probably yes because you are female (not necessarily just because you are young) 2) we have a problem in our society in general of poor workmanship and lack of ethics as well Advice: 1) do a lot of research before getting your bids and signing a contract--this site has been very helpful to me, as well as asking neighbors, co-workers, checking with the BBB, doing a google search, etc. 2)Get a good digital camera and take pictures of the entire process-before during and after, and make sure that they know you are documenting. Also document your conversations. Half of these workmen won't blink an eye at lying about what happened, what was done etc. They convince themselves that they are justified in some way. 3) Make sure that you know multiple ways to contact the contractor--phone, email, etc, so you can get around the "I didn't get your message" excuse. 4) If you can have a male around at the time of signing the contract or even the estimate do so. They don't have to be related, just just need to appear like they know something and have an interest in the situation 5) when or if you do have to dispute something, remember that thanks to your documentation and contract, you control the situation and the paycheck (you haven't paid them until you are satisfied, right?) and don't have to put up with it. Continue to state with a friendly-to-neutral voice and demeanor what needs to be fixed and why, and DON'T let the contractor distract you with red herrings (like "I shouldn't have to fix this hole in the wall because you changed the paint color") and excuses ("Grandma was sick") Remember, you don't need them to LIKE you, and they don't care if you like them. About the cabinets: I hope you have some sort of warranty. I would be asking for a refund and opening a complaint with the BBB.

Has anyone used an ''invitation'' web site?
Q

Thanks for your comments! I'm putting together a draft/test invitation for an upcoming performance and will try it out on a few chorus members. I'm using evite, and so far it seems pretty straightforward. I am having a bit of trouble figuring out what the "reply style" settings do, but I'm sure that will be more obvious once I send the invitation and receive responses. roselvr--We all share our email addresses already, so I don't think there are any privacy issues. We send each other mass email all the time, and we rarely use BCC. Our chorus is somewhat "closed" to outsiders; we don't communicate with the public through email (just through song!).

Does anyone have

Unless this person is a relative or very close friend phone numbers should not be given out. I don't take it that Bestlawn ever asked anyone to give her the number. She said, "Does anyone have Kinnie's phone number? If so, can you please call her?" Do you mean kimmie5? You might try posting to the thread she started in late Dec...(since the search now works) maybe she is getting replies emailed to her. Also...being rbb I am curious as to what the weird response was. Feel free to email me if you like. Sue...rbb

Why does my mother come over & voice her opinions?
Q
Comments (40)
I've really been enjoying everyone's stories in this thread. You can see a lot of love here! Clementine, if you tell your mom to butt out, no matter how politely you say it, it will hurt her deeply. She advises you because she loves you and wants to give to you, and she needs to feel needed. I had sort of the same problem with my mother. So I sat down and thought about how she would love to feel that she had done something nice for me. Then I did a little mental inventory of her skills, and she had no shortage of those. I wanted to sew new living room drapes, pleated. This was an area where I really would love her help. So when she was over, I took her to the fabric store with me and we picked out something pretty. Then she helped me measure and cut, I sewed, and together we hung them. It turned out to be a really nice mother-daughter time for us both. I got help with something I needed help with, and she got to feel needed and appreciated, which she was. I learned to think of things to ask her opinions and help with, and she learned to relax. Everybody won. If you think about it, maybe can you find a way to put your mom to work helping you sew, or can, or something?

Google Voice is a phone service from Google. It's not that different from Skype or Vonage or other VoiP phones. The reason I want it is that it provides free transcription of voice mail, and then sends it to you as a text message. (I already have this on Vonage, but I have to pay for it.)

I'm middle-aged, but I am totally in sync with the "don't leave a voice mail - text me!" generation.

Sorry for the delay but your invite is on the way. The thing I like best about (formerly GrandCentral, now) Google Voice is the forwarding number feature. I use it when I want to let someone call me, BUT have some control in case they abuse it. Especially my cell phone. If someone starts calling too much or harassing or give it out or something you can turn it off and not affect your actual number.

The voicemail is kind of nice but it's not the most accurate. There's been some funny transcriptions! If it can't make out what's being said, it'll take a guess or just leave a blank space.

It can also block numbers if you want. You can get SMS messages via email. And you can set it up to call, for instance your home phone, your cell phone and your office phone so if you happen to be out at a store, you'll get the call without having to dial 3 numbers to find you. I also used it for a while so a couple friends could call without long distance charges. I had a local number for them, they'd call that number and it'd forward to me. But now with cells so predominant, that part is of little value anymore.

It's not for everyone, but there's some very nice features if you need them.

Thanks for the offer, Restlesmomma, and thanks to Cynic for the invite. The feature set for Google Voice is very much the same as Vonage, including what Vonage calls Simul-Ring. (That's what Cynic described.)

I still have to set up the voice mailbox for transcription. Just haven't had time. And I think I read that you can set up groups and have different voicemail greetings for different groups, which would be nice.
