Comfortable but not over-bearing recliner?

I know recliners are not "stylish" but when you get older, it is so good to be able to put my feet up. I am needing two of them...one for me and one for DH. Everything that I find is SO big and ugly...I want something smaller but a style that we can both enjoy. I saw one a couple years ago that was kinda like a wing-back chair, swival and reclined. It was really comfortable, but the person who had it has passed away so I can't find out the brand. Does anyone have a suggestion? We live in Kansas, so our selection might be limited.

Have you checked the Laz-Y-Boy website? They have quite a few recliners that are not so "recliner" looking.

This is a picture (albeit old) of our recliner. It was a gift, so I'm not sure who the manufacturer is, but I know it's Canadian, so it probably wouldn't help you anyway. As far as recliners go though, it's pretty petite and very comfy and does not have any "hardware" showing (i.e. no handle on the side of the chair).

I am not sure what you are looking for, I think Lazy Boy has some nice looking chairs, however, I have a bad back and knees, and have been looking into chairs at the Relax the Back store. These aren't clunky like the old recliners, and they also will do more then get your feet up...

I am saving my pennies!

A better name for The Best Home Furnishing Company is "The Worst Home Furnishings Company" when it comes to customer service and standing behind their products. Don’t walk away from this brand, RUN QUICKLY! My wife and I live in Minnesota, but have a park model home in Estero, FL. We purchased a Best Home Furnishings recliner in February of 2016 from a furniture store in Naples, FL. Our home in FL is only occupied for two weeks in November, and the months of February and March each year. When we arrived in November of 2018, we noticed that the fabric was cracking on the headrest. Our home is air conditioned all year round, has proper humidity, the windows are tinted, and we have shades that are closed when we are gone. Furniture could not have a better environment to sit in. I took the back of the chair off in November of 2018 and took it to Kanes Furniture where we purchased the chair. My goal was to simply replace the back. We were informed that model had been discontinued so no back was available. That should have been my first clue to how Best Home Furnishings handles a chair that has problems……just discontinue it. The next thing we were told is the chair is out of warranty. I explained that I understand there is a calendar warranty, but further explained how little the chair had been used. I felt that the company should stand behind it due to the little wear and tear this chair had actually incurred, and I was sure there was a problem with the material used to cover this model chair. I totaled up the number of days that anyone could have sat in the chair, and it was 189. We had two Flexsteel recliners in our home in Minnesota that provided over 30 years of trouble free service. Speaks volumes to the old saying, “you get what you pay for”. The furniture store at least listened to me and provided the phone number of manufacturer of the chair, The Best Home Furnishings Company in Ferdinand, Indiana. (at least this was where my call went) When you call with a complaint the first thing you will find is the people who answer the phone have been trained to get rid of you quickly. They have no intention to let you talk to anyone of authority. After a firm back and forth with the lady that answered the phone she finally told me “I am just doing my job”. Really? Discarding a customer with a concern about your product is your job? Fortunately, I was able to push through to someone up the ladder named Pat. Three voice mails and a week later Pat did call me back. From their website and years in business I was sure I would find Best Home Furnishings a reputable company that would be concerned about this product’s failure and would want to have a discussion and find common ground…... NOT THE CASE. Once on the phone with Pat, I repeated what I told Kane’s Furniture and assumed Pat would be familiar with this problem and work with me to find a fair solution……not a chance. Pat is very well trained to hear your concern and then repeat "sorry, it is out of warranty and we can’t help you” multiple times until the discussion ends. He made no effort to keep us as a customer. It was obvious he just wanted to discard us as quickly as he could. The lack of finding a phone number on their website should have been a excellent indicator to me of their customer service. If it is there, they have done a good job of hiding it. Speak with a customer, good heavens, that’s a concept from the 20th century!! The only manner of contact I could find on the site was to email them. Before you purchase any product made by The Best Home Furnishings Company from a furniture store, you may want to visit the Better Business Bureau website and read about them. The BBB shows 32 complaints about this company for various reasons. In addition, on Google they are only able to achieve a 3.6 star rating. I have been self employed for over 40 years, am 65 years old and do not make a habit of writing negative reviews. The Best Home Furnishing Company brags about being in business since 1962 and quality of their furniture building process. It is obvious to me that the original owners of this company are no longer active as I am sure they would have met this problem with a completely different attitude….the attitude that cared about customer satisfaction, quality furniture, and allowed The Best Home Furnishings Company to grow and prosper. Lastly, I will “venture a guess” the reason they took the “cut & run” attitude with me is there are probably hundreds or thousands of customers across America just like me that have a Best Chair with the same defective cover. Class Action Lawsuit time? Let's band together and send a message. When a quality company has a problem with a product, they either extend the warranty or have a recall to make sure people get taken care of. Not run from the problem like The Best Home Furnishings Company is doing. Most successful companies want repeat customers. Shame on you! Dave Nolander

Early one morning last week, DSIL had to chase a bear out of the garage. The garage door was closed, but he came in through the man door that is almost always closed, it may have been left ajar that night. The bear got the dog food and had opened the refrigerator and pulled out a few bud lights (probably trying to get to more dog food on top of the fridge. DSIL chased him out with a broom and then managed to lock himself out of the house. Fortunately, the bear had run off by then. The dog, who had just walked past the door to the garage didn't bark or do anything to alert. Not a good guard dog to say the least. It is not unusual to have to chase a bear off -- usually yelling is all that is needed. Bear are frequent this time of year around town, but are frightened by humans and property damage is really the only problem. Garbage cannot be left outside, by city ordinance, unless in an approved bear proof containers. Making it easier for Bear to forage in town is dangerous for the bears, not so much humans. Humans tend to contribute to the problem by leaving food out -- even hummingbird feeders are a problem. Moose and mountain lions are much more worrisome -- those are much more of a threat to humans and dogs. Luckily, mountain lions are relatively scarce, but there seems to be a moose injury to a human in the area every year or so. Usually cows protecting their young and they will charge a dog, who they view as a wolf, one of their primary predators.

The bear stories just keep getting more scary, Lynn. I hope your bear moves on. We have coyotes, foxes, turkeys, and the other usual assorted small wildlife and that is enough for me. Several neighbors keep horses, and the hay and feed for them can attract wildlife as well as the bird food. Black bear have been sighted in parts of Alabama the past several years though, so maybe it's a matter of time.

As an update to our new loveseat. After a good week of break in, being 200lbs. The seat cushion still has support, yet is more conforming, even though it looks like new, without any imprint left from long duration use. My tension spring mod is perfect. Just have to remember to lean back a whisker to lock the foot rest into place. Pet may jump on rest and get an unstable feel, and jump off. Added 1/4" spacer to the underside of foot rest mounting to the retractable frame. I used a 4" long stick on foot glide strip, pack of 4, to do our couch. It allowed for long legged or short people to close and lock the foot rest into place, with a lot less effort. Though with my finding, you can easily do so, leaning forward from seat while raising up, will lock it in place. This is with many pull trigger recliners, that use a single tension spring on each side of the foot rest. The Tulin, which is a lower build (cushion and fabric) quality has same issue, even though it uses a factory spring. Could be because the foot rest not as padded as the Clonmel, which makes sense, due to my findings. 1/4" more spacing makes a world of difference, with my spring mod. As for all metal frame construction, always look into weight capacity with items. I would not go with an item that is not rated below 350lbs. There are 3 main grades of steel from frame manufacturers. At least 5 frames are identically made through out Asia / China, the only difference is manufacturer and location. Each frame is made with hardware specs required for use. Cheaper recliners will have 250lbs capacity. Even though you weigh below 250lbs, the steel will wear out faster because of its softness (less rigid) holes will elongate. Its fasteners may be of lower grade as well. The standards of having pocketed springs, and hard wood frames, are antiquated. Any wood used is covered and supports basic needs, in arm and back rest. Sure your $1500 couch won't do well falling from a second story banister or off a pickup truck bed on the highway at 75mph. But realistically its going to stay in place, mostly on one room, for a good deal of time. Well I am done... so that is what you get with mass production assembly. As long as it looks good, functions and meets a customer's needs, that is all that is expected. Best thing is to check out all manufacturer's limitations, through 3 star comments. Work from there on what to expect. Eliminate the problems, as found on testing on floor models, or before they come... as with plastic release handles. A good idea is to look for zippered cushions. Items below $1,000 may not have them. The zipper will come in handy for long term care and upkeep.

My 2 cents...DMIL had a "lovely" recliner that was horribly uncomfortable. My parents had a LazyBoy, not too huge, but super comfy and nap worthy.

When I was in my last trimester of both pregnancies, the only way I could get some rest was in a recliner. We went with LazyBoy!

I would not go with any others! Again, just my 2 cents. :)

We have two chairs that look like wingback, but they are really recliners. Call stores around you and see if they have any of those to try out. We bought them 14 years ago and they are still great.

Go over to the Furniture forum and search for La-Z-Boy (and spelling variations thereof). A lot of people are really unsatisfied with the quality, especially of the mechanism. Then search "recliner" for some excellent discussions on good brands.

Had we not had a cat when we were purchasing our living room furniture (cats and recliners do not mix, one of my previous cats was badly injured getting caught in the mechanism when the chair's footrest was lowered) we would have purchased a recliner from Classic Leather, Hancock & Moore (particularly elegant ones and top, top quality), or Sam Moore. I hate that flabby, oversized "recliner look" with great passion and all three manufacturers had lovely recliners that you would never have thought were recliners.

We have one from American Leather. You don't say where in Kansas but they are sold in a variety of places, there is a dealer locator tool on their web site. We have the Kaden. It is a year old and we are very happy with it - no hardware, super comfy, a bit pricey if I remember correctly but nicer than a chair & ottoman for relaxation.

Here are the recliners I got for our LR. They are Bernhardt, from Macy's. I also dislike the Archie Bunker style, as I call it :), of recliner. These to me look more like nice library-style chairs but they are soooo comfortable to lounge in. You can't tell from this photo but the tv is positioned so the chairs are exactly right for viewing. There is almost always someone sitting in one of them.

Hi,

My DH loves recliners, and I hate 'puffy' furniture (that's what I call it...). I looked all over the place for a small swivel/rocking recliner, and finally bought this one from Lane.

I was able to select the fabric, and picked a non-velour type fabric that was similar to the fabric on my traditional clean-lined sofa fabric, and it fits in well. It IS small, and an obese person would not be comfortable.

Leather or upholstered?

In hubby's home theater room we started out with a LaZBoy couch. Something went wrong with the workings and the upholestery was ripped from the inside (under warranty) so we used the warranty value to trade for two recliners with a custom upholstery. Three weeks into the recliners the upholstery was coming apart at the seams so we traded for two new recliners with a completely different custom upholstery. Within 6 months that upholstery was fraying on the arms (we rarely used these chairs) and had started to streak. It was a fight but we got our money back and decided to go leather.

One thing that I always hated about the recliners was -- they look like recliners. Eww.

At NFM (great if you live in Eastern KS) we found a reclining sofa and recliner pair that are very comfortable, have lasted well so far (we've had them about 5 years now), and don't look like what I call the typical "80s moon boots" reclining furniture. I will see if I can find a picture. Not overbearing at all, IMO.

I do go to NFM once in awhile...(we live in Junction City, which is 60 miles west of Topeka)...will try to see if they still have this chair....comfy, but not HUGE~~thanks.

We found a ton to choose from at Crate and Barrel, and just bought the Mesa. DH is very happy with the comfort, and I think it's a really handsome chair. We weren't even looking for a recliner, we were looking for a club chair.

We have 3 in our FR, the large one is a Lazyboy and the 2 leather recliners are by Lane. All are VERY comfy. :)
