Boy's theater bedroom ideas needed...

Hello, it's been a long time since I've been around here, but I need some help and I know everyone here has the best ideas! We are currently building a bedroom and bathroom for my disabled adult brother. He will be moving in with us when it's completed. He is a big movie buff, and has his current room painted a dark blue, with movie posters all around. We have a shoestring budget right now, with all the addition costs, but I really would like to work up a plan in my mind for what the room will end up looking like. He's a really, really great guy and I would like to give him a room that's cool and fun.

We are installing the same brazilian cherry laminate flooring that we have in the rest of the house. I was thinking of painting the walls a latte/brown color, with creamy white moldings. I want to eventually do some velvety red drapes on either side of his tv, in a theater theme. What ideas would you have for the ceiling? Maybe a midnight blue to add some drama? I love the LED starry lights they have, but those are too spendy. But I like the idea. I'm also going to search for some neat classic movie posters, like Bogart and Hepburn, with black frames.

So, I know this is a lot of random ideas with no pictures, but I was hoping you might have some color ideas, or theater room ideas. I'm excited about doing this for him, and I'm trying to build an inspiration picture folder to look back on in the next few weeks as we finalize things. I really appreciate any ideas or pics you might have!

Michelle, have you looked in our Gallery for inspiration pictures, color schemes, and accessorizing and storage ideas? Threads that may interest you include the Bedroom thread and the Home Offices thread where I tucked some theater pictures (there are also some good storage ideas). When you said "boys" I also thought of the Older Kids' Bedrooms thread. If you close out of this thread you'll see a link to our Gallery at the bottom of the page. Once there you can search visually, or using the search feature.

Do you have a college bookstore near you? They are usually a great resource for inexpensive movie posters in smaller sizes. You could do a great arrangement of these on one wall and then maybe scour around tag sales/flea markets for old movie projectors, cameras, leather cameras bags and camera reels to display on floating shelves ( I think Pottery Barn shows this idea in some of their catalogs). If you search online, there is also a great poster out there that has the top 100 famous lines from movies that's decorative as well as entertaining.

I would hang the decal on his door (back or front). Kids love photos of themselves and photos of their family. So at the foot of his bed I would hang a print (could even be a canvas wrap) of him with his family in the largest size you can afford. EDIT: make sure you hang it low, so he can see it easily! Or you could do a collage frame with shots of various extended family members. My little guy loves pointing out the people he knows in photos (he'll be three in March) and it helps little ones feel a connection with family who is far away that they might not see often, if that is a situation you can relate to. Other than that, a low pile rug that he can drive cars and build with blocks on and you're finished! It's a perfect room for a little one to grow up in: just enough room to play and small enough to tidy easily, a neutral wall colour to let his imagination do the work, a big mirror for dress-up days and making faces and generally admiring himself. Good job! Oh, and about the window, go with the code spacing for railings when determining the safety (I think it's 4"). If he can back his body out and his head gets trapped, oh no.

I think that room on Blackish is so cute. I don't know how to paint/decorate. I am having trouble because most rooms you see with shared boy/girl rooms they are twin beds and each side decorated differently. I will have a Twin over full bunk/loft bed. The kids really like the sports decals.. I am not tied to them but unsure how to pull this room together with either paint or something. UGH.. I wanted to hopefully paint next weekend. Any other ideas.

what a great space for him. so many ideas. first thing I'd do is some built-ins in some of those nooks. simple plywood, paint. For books, video games, collections, etc. that inset next to the J would be the perfect spot for a built in bookcase. Look at Ikea hacks, or DIY inset bookcase tutorials. Ikea Billy Bookcasehack: https://food52.com/blog/25110-best-ikea-billy-bookcase-hacks how about a mural (peel and stick) of some sort? you could do it on the wall or on that sloped ceiling above his bed. bring in some sstring lights and drape them from wall to wall do a lower bed like this, back in that corner, string the lights around it, and remove that nightstand, replace w/a cute table. or something like this platform style bed. put on a regular mattress or a futon mattress. do a diff light. remove that futon across from it and bring in a low-boy dresser of some type. bring in lots of thin, cotton dhurrie rugs you could do a roman clay treatment on the wall and paint a dark color. maybe bring in some faux beams from side to side drape the lights over those: for the lower areas that are wasted space, do something like these low open shelf cubbies (enlarge this pic to see them) decor ideas, lighting, bean bags, get some cheap pine tongue and groove flooring (lumber liquidators) and install it on one wall, or on one of the angled ceilings, or around the desk area, behind the sofa, etc what's under that carpet? some type of wood? you could paint it w/porch paint and thrown down a bunch of cool looking rugs. maybe redo the desk w/Ikea desk hacks. you could get a solid piece of butcher block (or a remnant), span it to fit across the entire area under the window, (use cleats to get it to 'float') and then some pull out ikea drawers. or something like this gray one. maybe hang a light directly over the desk, or get a desk light remove that heavy blue drape, and do an inset window blind. I did this black cellular blind on my sons bedroom window. If you get the blackout option, you won't need the heavy drape to block out the light. something liek this. it's less bulky looking, the desk looks better, (frame out the window w/white trim if you're using a dark shade), and the pendant light gives overhead light in that dark space.

A friend I use to know had someone paint a movie reel on the upper top part of the walls...each picture depicted a famous scene from classic movies. It was really great!

Why don't you ask your brother what he likes? It's his room.
Include him in the process of decision making. Communication is always a good thing.
Maybe he has some friends who want to come and hang out.
It doesn't have to be fancy just comfortable and welcoming.

Remember, you said adult .

Micheller, I think it's amazing what you are doing for your brother, so very special & giving. You obviously love him very much but I think Gitananoel has a very good point. I used to work with the disabled and just like with anyone independence, is key. Part of that is being able to make his or her own decisions or at least be a part of the decision making process. Maybe he's tired of the theater theme and ready for a complete change, you won't know until you ask. It would also be something you could all collaborate and do together and would probably help him to feel more comfortable coming into your home.

Thank you all for your input on our project! I had forgotten about the gallery, Oceanna. I will check it out and I'm sure will see many good ideas. And all the tips about college bookstores, Ebay, and the like are very helpful. Great pics, too! That was a very cool theater room. Thanks! :)

I also appreciate your reminders to include my brother in the process. I know that on a forum such as this, it's hard to get the full picture behind someone's communication. My brother is fully involved in the decision making process, and is very excited about his new theater room. I'm just looking for cool extras and details that he might like to make the room special. One idea..make a feature wall (maybe behind the bed or the opposite wall?) Paint a BIG rectangular box in silver metallic (the 'silver screen') on the wall..with red velvet drapes on either side and a valance over the top of the screen. Within the silver screen-you could highlight 8x10 pics ..or larger..of famous movie stars he admires-all in the same black frames. By placing a bullet or can spotlight on a dimmer over the wall-it will certainly showcase it.

Maybe a lamp place could use an old projector & make a lamp out of it. If you can find a bunch of old movie reels-a grouping of 6-8 of them over a dresser or chest-or behind his bed-would look great also...paint them silver as well? Perhaps even stencil a length of black film amid the reels..there has to be a stencil of such somewhere-but easy enough to make your own.
Oh and in front of the "silver screen"? How about one of those thick red velvet ropes hung from 2 silver poles on a round base..(used to hold the crowd in line.)

Micheller, it is hard to know, but so glad to hear! thanks for not taking my post the wrong way. I have seen a TON of fun movie theater "stuff" at both Kirkland Home & in the picture department of Home Goods. Reasonably priced and really cool looking.
