My trim is all painted, and so are the doors. I think it looks very bad to have painted doors and stained trim (as if someone has framed the door like a picture, or as someone said on another thread, as though they forgot to paint the trim.) However, I think it looks fine to have painted trim and stained doors -- especially if the door is a very beautiful wood, stain color, and finish. In a couple of our houses we had all painted trim and doors, but added beautiful french doors and stained them. It looked great. But that was only because the wood door was really pretty. If you don't like the look of your oak door, I think you should paint it, DH willing. Be aware that the oak grain will probably show through the paint.

I think you can make two finishes work, if there is something that ties them together. Three is tough. For example, I have a mishmash of bedroom furniture, most of which is a honey maple color, from two different sets. I am not a "sets" kind of girl so I swapped out all the knobs with hammered black (actually salvaged from our kitchen cabinets) and all new pieces of furniture are black. They work pretty nicely together, I think. You might look at the kitchens forum or the Finished Kitchens Blog (get to it through Kitchens) - there are a lot of kitchens where people very successfully mix stained and painted wood. It might give you some ideas. If you want to stain previously finished wood, definitely look at General Finishes gel stain. I recently used it on a vanity and it was very easy to use, nice color, etc. I used Java but it does come in other colors. You would need to stain darker than the current finish, but you can go over the existing finish with it without stripping. Good luck!

Yes, if you paint the wall (the paneling) the same colors, top and bottom and paint the chair rail that color also, it will make it all joint together and disappear sotaspeak. Then paint the doors the white color as your other white in-house. You can paint the kick molding (shoe molding) or you can leave it the same color as your (dentil work, etc) molding at the top. In fact, I think I would paint the room the same color, yellow, green, gold, whatever, and then paint the doors like the other white trim in your house. Leave the shoe and quarter-round molding in the stain color and leave the stain at the top. I have seen this done before and it looks good. Then you have the white colors which connect to your foyer, your main color and only the color of the molding as a third color. Your room will look united and larger, more open. Another trick is to line paneling with cheap wallpaper and paint over it. They used to sell what is called wallpaper lining for that specific purpose, to hide the "creases/dents" in your paneling but most people do not mind them (I don't). But, if you do, you can spackle or grout them, whatever it is called, or you can just buy cheap-as-dirt wallpaper to put over the paneling and paint that.

in the main room you have partial white windows. I'd paint them all white so that it matches. even the door casing. you can leave the wood doors. as for the baseboards, up to you. your wood ones don't look too bad. It's just a whole lot of wood, especially if you're bringing in arts/crafts type of oak furniture. the floor is oak but the baseboards and trim look like something else. I'd prob do that living room/kitchen trim/baseboards in Alabaster. wait for the other rooms until you get everything in and see how it looks you have to admit, it looks much fresher.
