best on-line backup service?

i don't have my computer backed up. i am not very computer literate. what is the best, most user friendly, and inexpensive on line back service available? i know there are a few, very knowledgeable people on this forum that can probably give me their opinions. thanks in advance....:)

I don't want my info in "the cloud", so I use an external hard drive.
I have a Seagate FreeAgent.

I'm with LuAnn. My Seagate FreeAgent takes care of my backups...and no one can ever access my "stuff". The purchase was a one-time expenditure (great sale at Staples), with no monthly or yearly costs.

22K files at 5 megs per is just over 100 gigs. Why buy a 3 terabyte drive, that's nearly 30 X larger than you need. Even at 10 megs per file, the smallest external Mac compatible drive currently sold is likely larger than you need. Unless you have a very fast internet connection, uploading 100 gigs to a cloud will take forever and could run you afoul of your ISP's fair use policy. Redundant backup is good if the files are important. You can use a second pc or buy two external drives. Unless the files are business related or accessed and manipulated every day, a RAID setup is completely unnecessary in my opinion

I wish it were that simple when we researched our windows. Identifying a manufacturer is easy enough but unfortunately, each distributes its product differently and there can be different layers between the factory and the consumers. While a dealer in NYC may be wonderful to deal with for a specific brand, a dealer in CA selling the same brand may receive a ton of complaints. Too often, bad installation and poor customer service by independent dealers and shops are the causes of much of our angst, not the factory. SOme factories will indeed handle complaints quickly and honor their warranty swiftly while others may drag on. In the end, I would say finding a good dealer is key and finding a good installer is absolutely essential. A good dealer can be a good go-between if there are problems from ordering errors to warranty service and a good installer will remove installation failure as a problem. It just makes the whole process smoother and more enjoyable. If this is boring you now :-), the three companies we have been happy with are Marvin, Milgard and Andersen. We have used no other brands. The following are some of our experience; feel free to skip. There are three things that combined to make windows+doors project a positive experience. The first is actually we, the consumer. Our own knowledge dictates how much we control the project. The more knowledgeable we are, the more control we can exert, the better our decisions will be, the happier we will be. This educational process prepares us for the second step. The second is knowing how to select the right window type for your applications, the right shop to buy them from and the right contractor to do the installation. Armed with knowledge, you will be able to pick the right shop, the right contractor and the right type of windows. This is much much more important than deciding which brand. Finally, you can pick the brand. This is actually the easiest part once you have done 1 and 2 above. Shop for the brands, apply your knowledge as you shop to judge which shop is knowledgeable and willing to help vs. shops of lower quality. The following is a sample of the steps we took to ensure the whole process ran smoothly. You did not state if you have done these, so if I am stating the obvious, forgive me; just trying to help. 1. Take your time and be patient with the whole process. Do not be rushed. 2. Trust your own intelligence, believe you can learn. 3. Learn all you can about current window technologies. What is Low-E, what is double pane vs triple, what is SHGC, what is argon/krypton fill, etc. 4. Define why you are shopping for new windows and doors. Energy efficiency? Comfort? Adding warmth to interior? Maintaining architecture? 5. Define your requirements of these windows and doors. Each opening may have different requirements. Size, lighting amount, tempered vs annealed vs laminated, aluminum clad vs vinyl vs fiberglass, etc. 6. Define which opening in your house will receive which type of window? 7. Once you know the type, style and specifications, it is easy to identify which factor sells the windows you may want. Pick 2 or 3, download installation manuals from the candidate window factories. 8. Pretend you are the contractor, mentally walk through step by step what you would have to do? Strip the siding? Take off faming? cut through dry wall? Yank out old window frame? Any electrical in the wall that must be rerouted? Most importantly, identify any bad conditions in existing windows. 9. #8 above will generate all sorts of installation questions, list them. It will also generate tasks, list them too. 10. Research what you can on-line or visit local wood shop to get most of questions answered. By now, you will have a decent idea of what it will take. 11. Do a rough estimate of RO measurements. 12. Prepare a specification document listing each opening, each type of window, the RO, different options, if any. 13. With #12, you can now go to individual shop to ask them more questions and seek an estimate. Most shops will be impressed by your spec and be more willing to work with you. They know you are dead serious. THe information you gather will help you narrow your brand choices. 14. With #13, you can also start to interview contractors. You can ask them to answer your questions, or deliberately point out bad parts of existing windows and ask them innocently how they would address those? You can gauge their expertise by how they answer. If they answer to your satisfaction, you know they are good enough. If they brush you off and do not give an answer you can fully understand, then they are at best not good at communication or at worse not interested in doing a good job. By knowing approximately what you must do to install them yourself, you can also ask the contractor specific labor cost question about what must be done, why, using what material and how much it may cost. This ensures everything that must be done is well known and specified and there are no surprises. 15. After picking contractor and after they have done their professional RO measurements, update your specifications, have the shop use this final document to order. Everyone signs off of course and now order can be placed. Make sure you get a copy of the PO from the shop if possible. Sometimes, if they order a large batch, this is not possible but a shop should always give you a receipt for down-payment and you can INSIST they list clearly what they have ordered on that receipt. This listing must match your specification. This eliminates order errors and if it does occur, the signed-off specification is the binding document. The shop or distributor or factory cannot point a finger at you. At this point, you can guess what else needs to be done. My experience is that the more diligent we are, the pickier we are, the more the shop pays attention and the less the contractor will cut corners. So you are the boss, you have to act and behave like one but respectfully of course :-), they are professionals after all (we hope) and deserve proper treatment. It is a lot of work but it is our house after all and if we want a nice happy experience, we do need to put in the work. Otherwise, it will be almost like a crap-shoot, hoping for the right windows, the right shop and the right installer. Too big of a gamble for me, personally :-). LOL. Getting back to fuel, I do wonder about diesel. Wonderful engines etc and probably the go-to for commercial power backup but I wonder about the fuel life in terms of standing....it does go off after time, and I suspect the standby maintenance is bigger - and maintenance is something many probably don't factor into costs. I wonder if you can get the special diesel that doesn't include the road tax and is cheaper? The gas equivalent here in Canada is called "purple gas" but don't know if there's a diesel equivalent. If it was legal to do so and you were committed to having the tank topped off regularly, or had two tanks, I suppose you could, theoretically, have a diesel vehicle and use the fuel from tank A) when it was getting old, keeping tank B) full, then swap and use up tank B) - I believe you can have such fuel tested too. Reading the Costco fliers I thought the Natural gas gensets sounded appealing - no dangerous fuel storage, no old fuel to get rid of, but then you are reliant on the outside gas supply. I suppose propane beats this, but how long does IT keep?

Does this comment refer to the service for the above ovens, or is the comment about the ovens, "themselves"? If you are talking about service, with any brand, you need to do a thorough research, in "Your own particular area" for any brand you are choosing. Some folks post about the excellent service for Miele appliances, but google Miele Service San Francisco, (if you want to see an "eye opener")! When after 8 years my Jenn-air Fridge needed service, I called "Jenn-Air". They recommended 3 different service companies, two of the 3 companies had "Horrific reviews" on Yelp and the Yellow Pages. Fortunately # 3 was a winner. So regardless of brand, service can vary greatly, even in the same geological area, so best to find out about service, in your area, before you buy! Gary

SO easy to use an external hard drive.

I don't even use any software...

I just take the files/folders I really want - My PIctures, Documents, etc... and copy/paste them onto the external drive. so simple. Just a couple clicks.

Then unplug that drive and put it in a different spot from your computer. If you are concerned about fire, etc - put it in the bank box.

I do use cloud to back up and sync my apple devices, car etc.
I use an external hard drive for my pc's but often forget to back up (its not connected daily). That's the pitfall for me. I like having all my contacts, music, where I can find it from anywhere. We keep all our farm, taxes and all that stuff separate from my (not to) private info.

I don't use an online backup service as I too don't particularly want my stuff in the cloud. I have an external hard drive set up for automatic back up. However if my house burns down or gets destroyed in a tornado I would like my stuff in the cloud.

I'm starting to think about switching since I started using an online backup service for my computer at work. We use Carbonite which is also available for home computer users. I figure this is a decent solution since I work for a software/technology company. We have a lot of people with the expertise to make the right decision on stuff like this.

i was hoping for an online service simple enough that all i have to do is click "back up everything" instead of highlighting every individual thing....which would take me forever. gibby, how easy is carbonite to use? thanks for all your help, everyone!!! :)

I use EaseUS Todo backup which you can get free or for a charge of $30. I paid for the homebackup and workstation backup when they had a huge 40% off sale (they run sales often). I've been using it for almost a year with absolutely no issues. I also have a few external drives. I back up to multiple places since my laptop is used for my business and this way I can access everything from it to my desktop should anything happen to my laptop or use the backup on EaseUS. I learned the hard way to back up weekly using various backup methods.

I thought Carbonite was easy but I'm in the technology business. I think I just had to select the folders I wanted backed up and do a few configuration settings related to how often to back up and time of day. It takes a while to back everything up the first time but after that it only backs up things that change. If you somehow end up with new folders it alerts you and asks you if you want to back those up. It's a no brainer after that - just runs every day. It shows little colored dots on the file names - green and yellow I think - so you can tell what hasn't yet been backed up.

With EaseUS Todo backup, if I do have a failure of the first drive,
how do I recover my OS and data from the back up drive?
I'm using the 'disk and partition' backup option to backup
to a second internal drive on my computer.

My DD and DSIL had years of photos backed up on external hard drive. Then, during a move, it got damaged. They paid $1000 to try recovery, but it didn't work. They lost wedding photos and the 1st 16 months of their oldest child's life. Maybe cloud storage is better?

I don't want my personal information all over the internet. I don't use a smart phone or a digital camera. If I want photos, I own a regular old point-and-shoot Canon camera that uses regular film I have to get developed.I no longer do on-line banking. I don't order anything off Ebay or any of those sites. Yes I might as well be living in the 19th century. Heck, I remember when our phone was a party-line and our refrigerator was just an insulated box and we had a large cake of ice delivered on Saturday. .

the benefit to a program like the EaseUs backup is that you do an image back up which is the best type of back up, it backs up not just your files but the entire operating system, your settings, your drivers, absolutely everything exactly as it is when you do the back up, it is essentially a snapshot of exactly how the computer sits at that moment. Then from it you can go back and select individual files or if you have a failure you can install your entire system on a new hard drive and be up and running in minutes exactly as you were. There are several free imaging software available.

If you decide to go with carbonite which does store it away from your home, go to the kim komando site and look for it there you will get a discount buying it through her.

As to online storage you can get up to 50 GB free storage a ADrive, I have used them for years. It is one more good place to store some of your files off site.
