What a lovely idea and how considerate your are to suggest including the other grandmother. Not everyone has such a good rapport with in-laws and I think it's wonderful. So often gift giving can become a competition. I really like your idea and it could even make the gift more significant for your granddaughter.

Husbands, or husbands to be are not always the best judge on their own mothers, how could they be on the "other" mother?

Mine sucks in that department. I would go ahead. Can only bring the grandma's closer together, which is great for the grand daughter.

I would make it a one on one personal gift between myself and GDaughter. Just my opinion. You don't want to overwhelm her with charms, it could become a contest between the two Grandmas. And silver is not cheap. I have a silver charm bracelet with about 30 charms my own Mother gave me when I was growing up. I never wear it anymore, but it's safe in my jewelry box and I look at it from time to time.

I agree that the gift of her two grandmothers working together as partners will be the best gift of all. The bracelet, as wonderful as it'll be, is a thing. The grandmothers' relationship coming together to do this for her is much more than that.

Being a grandma myself I think it is a lovely idea. What a special gift for your grandaughter.. She will be so proud to show it off for a lifetime to her friends and some day to her children. Keep up the good work, Grandma... Your grandaughter is lucky to have such a caring and sharing grandma...

it can get a bit difficult for us as we have 8 grands and 4 gma, not to mention 2 step, and one ggma...

I would also ask her...unless it is a hardship on her financially.

Both of my daughters married guys who's parents can afford to do a lot more for the grandkids than I can.

But I know I give more of my time than either of the other sets of grandparents do....Gotta....that's all I have.

Honestly, I think it'd be overwhelming to get that many charms. I'm not a person who likes a lot of jewelry either.

Pattico, I think that giving of your time is the best gift ever. My kids only see my mom once a year. They talk about her and ask to see her. My mil does not put any effort into the kids. They never ask to see her.

Part of the fun of a charm bracelet is adding to it over the years as your interests change or you pick up souvenirs from traveling. Have you thought about giving the sterling bracelet with only a few charms and then adding to it over the years?

I like Maire Cate's idea, but I would also include the other grandmother. Think it would make the bracelet even more special to your granddaughter.

I was the only one who nixed the idea of invovling the other Grandma. Please ignore my "vote". On second thought, especislly because she has collaborated before, it seems like a very nice project for two.

I think it's a fabulous idea. That will be a really meaningful gift to your granddaughter for years to come. She'll always remember it was from both her loving grandmothers. You are very kind to think of it.

The only problem I could ever see is if one of you bombarded her with charms so the bracelet would be more from one grandma than the other. Maybe you could/should agree on when charms would be given--birthdays, Christmas, or whatever, and how many.

It's an absolutely lovely idea. And I'd definitely involve the other grandma to get the first couple of charms to get the bracelet started. I definitely wouldn't fill it before giving it to her--so she can add the important charms herself. Would be a nice idea to add either an envelop of the split rings, or a gift certificate so she can have the charms soldered on in future.

BUT I would NOT do this unless I checked with the granddaughter's mother to make sure the girl will want one. You see, among young girls today, charm bracelets are considered 'old lady' jewelry. Kids around here don't wear them--won't because they're too old-fashioned. It would be a shame to get one her her if she won't appreciate it. That being said, I've still got my charm bracelet that I started as a teen (40+ years ago).

Like Azzalea, I don't ever wear mine, but I'm glad I have it. My mother gave me charms while I was a teenager to remind me of different things. My favorite charm was an ice cream cone. She and I had gone to a very fancy fashion mall and got ice cream cones. We were window shopping while licking our cones when suddenly the ice cream fell off her cone and went SPLAT on the nice floor. We looked at each other with wide eyes and RAN AWAY. It was so uncharacteristic for either of us, because normally we would have tried to clean it up. We were so embarrassed that the ice cream fell and then we ran, but we both found it so FUNNY and we still laugh about it. She got me the cone to remember that moment of bonding in my teen years. I think it means far more to me now than it did then.

If the grandaughter isn't a 'charm bracelet' person -- there area several other similar -- Pandora bracelets for one. But I still have my charm bracelet -- I got charms as gifts, bought some on vacations, etc. So don't 'fill' it up at the beginning...
But do share w/other grandmom...

I sure remember the fun of collecting the charms over the years that I grew up. I have 3 charm bracelets now and still treasure them.

I'd planned to have each of us pick a couple of charms, perhaps those which we shared an interest with our granddaughter. It would be a good idea to leave space in case we, or she, wanted to add some later.

The other grandma is fine financially so that is not an issue. We both spend time with her. Our gd is my only grandchild, and her only granddaughter. So this girl thing will be fun.

If she doesn't wear it I'm hoping that she will still appreciate it in some way. She could hang it on a holder of some sort in her room.

That will make almost surely it more precious to her, increasingly so over the years, I think ... and even more so after the both of you have gone, it will be an example to her of the virtues of both sharing and loving, and being inclusive rather than exclusive. We need more of that in this old world.

My husband's aunt wanted to start a pearl necklace when her first grand daughter was born. She thought she would add a pearl for each special occasion. After discussing her idea with her jeweler she realized that it would be better to buy an entire necklace to make sure that she'd always have a matching set of pearls. Her goal was to have a complete necklace with a set of pearl studs that her grand daughter could wear when she got married if she wanted to.

I always thought that was a unique idea.

I love your idea and very sentimental. Years ahead it may be something she can pass onto her own daughter that it was given to her by her grandmothers. I love the "girl thing" too.
