Range hoods...stupid question probably

We have a wood hood that we will be using and wondered if you can just mount it over a range hood that's ducted and the controls are underneath.

Yes. There is a vent a hood within our wood hood.

That's what I am planning to do. Most wood hoods have vent inserts. Braun is a popular choice, but I ordered XO brand. It has a Stainless filter rack that you can take out and wash. I believe some models have fiber filters that have to be replaced on occassion. I didn't install mine yet, so I am not sure how well it works. Hopefully, you will get some response from those who actually have a vent insert.

Gomanson Lots of questions are what this forum is for! One thing I notice when looking at the range maps you provided is a bit of a skewer northward for white spruce. Not that I think the map is way off, just a little bit. As Resin states, more acidic soils do favor germination for these species' seeds. Also worth mentioning is that in the past, large-scale natural disturbances could happen-namely fire-that are now largely suppressed. Many conifer stands got their start following such occurrences. There is an island which name escapes me just now, directly off the coast at Munising Michigan, in Lake Superior, composed largely of an old-growth Northern White Cedar forest. I was once told that this stand got its' start following a forest fire aprox. 400 years ago! Hybrid plants, provided they have a normal diploid chromosome arrangement, can produce viable seed. The resulting plants may or may not resemble the parents. One thing I wish I could see would be the enormous pine/hemlock stands that once existed here in Wisconsin. Visiting small remnant areas like the Cathedral of the Pines near Lakewood does give one a sense of what these much larger stands must have been like. Yes, timber from these areas did build much of the country, but what a shameful thing that the greed that drove this activity couldn't have been tempered. To bastardize a phrase, measure first, cut second. Get the flow measured with the house configured in whatever closed up condition is typical. The original fan system may be completely adequate, although adding a control for variable flow might be helpful if it is a bit loud at full power. The interior of the ducting needs to be inspected. You could have a fire hazard waiting to happen. How much grease has accumulated will depend on the duct velocity and 110 years of cooking history. Grease precipitation will increase as the cooking effluent cools, so the condition near the roof may be worse than over the stove. One purpose of filter screens and filter baffles is to be a fire block. I think some of the custom hood makers could construct an insert that provided filtering without having to include a fan assembly if the original fan provides good flow with some pressure drop simulating baffles. kas

The description says the genset has a 120v recept that can deliver 50 amps (I'll bet its duplex recpt isn't rated for more than 20 amps, but that's another issue). Sounds like the 120/240 switch parallels the armature windings, reversing one, into the 120v output. So you want the 240v position for running the house. I hope you don't have anybody in your house who would die without power, such as a person who needs oxygen from a concentrator. That doesn't look like a very high quality genset, and I'd wonder about its long term reliability. Dunno about the genset and the TV. The safe answer would be just to not use it (the television set, I mean). I can't imagine burning up $expensive$ gasoline just to watch televison on a big screen set anyway. I don't expect to have all the usual comforts when the power goes off; I'm OK with heat, a working fridge, and a few lights. Different priorities, I guess. ;-)

I don't know the answer, but if at all possible, the hood sounds like something truly unique to your house & definitely worth saving. The capture area is enviable & I suspect a liner to retrofit the inside with a proper sized blower will be no more expensive than a new 48" vent system. Any chance we can see a photo?

Aesthetics aside, 30 inches from stove top (not from top of grills) to vent hood bottom is the minimum height typically advised for the bottom of the mounted vent hood. Vent hood height may be higher if your range/cooktop manufacturer stipulates so and you plan to avail yourself of the warranty.

Wood mounted over stainless brings a new considerations into play: stainless is far less combustible than wood. Height matters. Two vent hood surfaces, one slightly higher, yet close to the lower vent hood, may result in a non-vented grease pocket on the wood vent undersurface, require nimble fingers to clean if even possible, and pose a fire hazard which is why the motor system is a main component of the kitchen ventilation system. One other thought is weight limit on your back wall mounting surface with two hoods, as that's a lot of weight on the back wall.

It's good to ask and do your research first. Hope this helps.

Ah, perhaps I misunderstood your post as mounting a new larger wood hood over a pre-existing, primary ducted, and probably stainless vent hood. If so, please excuse.
