Got Annabelles? zipdee- look!

After asking at our favorite garden centers and being told they didn't get any Annabelle hydrangeas in at all this year, I had given up,as it was getting late. On a whim Saturday we decided to go to a different center for mulch and lo and behold were the hydrangeas I was lusting after. They even turned out to be on sale. I was so excited the owner said she was glad they were going to a good home. LOL. Sheesh they aren't kittens for goodness sake! Anyway here are photos,one from the side facing out toward the street. The 3 plants are along our fence along the side of the front yard- the neighbor's house is on the other side of the fence.

The edges of the garden still need to be cut. I have been enjoying looking at the flowers from my front porch.

Also KK and Zip here is the black mulch altough it is hard to see.

Oh Wow! Those a beautiful .. you found some good sized plants. I love them CB, I hope they take off, get huge and give you many years of smiles. I can't wait until mine bloom out like that. That black mulch is sharp too, really shows off your plants.

Cooperbailey good grief your house is gorgeous. I didn't know that, you've been holding out. How old is your house?

Question? Do your Annabelle mop heads turn green shortly after they turn white? Mine do and it is so disappointing.

Not necessarily. As esh_ga pointed out, Illinois (and the northern half of the country) can be different. It is very common to see hydrangeas in full sun on trips to the Northeast. Drooping is not a sign of too much sun exactly but a sign of moisture problems. The first sign of too much sun would be scorching of the leaves, where they turn completely yellow or even white-ish. Another sign would be the need for more water than normal but with 3-4" mulch and watering when the soil is almost dry, this should not be a problem. Wilting during the first year becomes very common as summer temperatures rear their ugly head. Most established hydrangeas will recover on their own by themselves either by nightfall or next morning so you do not have to do anything. So keep monitoring the soil moisture. With 3-4" of mulch, you should be able to maintain the soil moist for some time. This is what I would recommend. If the wilting episode looks unusually bad, immediately water. Otherwise, water only if the soil feels almost dry or dry. If the plant remains wilted by the morning then water half the normal amount. Hydrangeas are large leafed plants so new hydrangeas tend to loose moisture thru their leaves faster than their recently potted roots can absorb. Once they are established in your garden, the mature root system can handle most instances of wilting but, they will not do well on year 1 and maybe on year 2 some times. Another time when this can occur is when it is windy so consider watering the night before if the weather forecaster says there is wind advisory for tomorrow.

I was really counting on flowers this year, I'm getting married late July and right now every foot means a lot in terms of my flower budget... They have a lot better looking ones in the stores still. I got it around mothers day, out was looking great. When I put it in the location there was a tree root that I did my best to get rid of. Could that be my issue? I let it wilt a little and the wilted part just never came back. I'm thinking it was my fault for not keeping it evenly moist until it was more established..

Blooms are the first thing to go when a hydrangea is stressed. I am not sure if your blooms naturally turned brown because of the time of the year (some of mine are doing that now) or because of the spray. Watering diluted some of the stuff but it may take a while to really get rid of it. Replace the mulch around the hydrangeas with new mulch since I assume some of the chemicals must have gotten into the mulch. Other than that, just monitor the plants for unusual behaviours. When the shrub goes dormant, remove blooms and leaves and dispose in the trash. The product should not be that lethal to plant life but it may make it hard for them to breathe so watering is a good step. After all, if you spill some in your face, the instructions say to apply water. Keep the soil moist until the plant goes dormant and water if during winter if it is a dry winter and your ground has not frozen. Do not fertilize.

I'm in Michigan. Typically, the Annabelle's (and other plants) left by end of summer in garden nurseries are somewhat neglected and underwatered thus the yellow/brown leaves, etc. That's how my first one looked when I purchased it nine years ago. It was lovely in the shade of the morning but in the afternoon sun and heat it wilted and sometimes leaves turned yellowish. Even extra watering and misting the leaves to cool them wouldn't change things very much. Only after the sun went down and it cooled off did it revive. Now since my maple has grown over the garden Annabelle receives light shade all day and has reached an abundant 6x6 ft. and never wilts. ...HOWEVER, when I purchased 8 more for another part of the garden which has rather sandy soil and receives both shade/sun, I've noticed that those on the shady side with almost no sun are very happy, whereas those few that receive both morning AND afternoon sun are sadly wilting, leaves turning yellow showing green veins, and even the flowerheads wilt, despite a good amount of watering. Even shading temporarily with cardboard in desperation and misting foliage to cool it, still doesn't help much. Personally, I think they hate the heat. My thinking is if it's too hot (80 degrees) for me, it's too hot for them. Do you think I should fertilize this new garden with Miracle Grow for evergreens (do they like acidic soil??) or just some organic cedar mulch and manure? Any suggestions? Thank you so much! Jeanne

I've dreamed of getting Annabelles for my white garden hedge for soooo long! Currently I have 1 Japanese Snowball Viburnum and 2 Oakleaf ydrangea.

Those are beautiful CB! The black mulch does look good there. We use pinestraw mulch here. Where are you located?

I've ordered a couple of oakleaf hydrangeas off ebay - from a nearby area. I'm going to do them in pots till fall as it's too hot to plant them now. There is an area I often drive through in the city where I work that has many, many of the oakleafs and they are sooooo pretty!

Just beautiful! Post more pics as the plants get bigger! PLEASE!

Oh, they're gorgeous! Those big ol' "snowballs" are just stunning! I think mine are the Endless Summer variety, and they aren't anywhere near as full and lush as yours. Enjoy!

That's my neighbors house on the other side of the fence! But you have seen my house before- I have the New Dawn roses growing over my front porch! my house was built in 1923.
My house. from last year or so. The cherry tree is not as full as it was then. To the right is where the annabelles are now.

Oh Sue, those are fabulous!! And I love the mulch. For some reason Annabelles are very available here in MN. Everytime I see them at the garden centers I think of CB and zipdee (and black mulch.)

Your home is lovely. It has always been a favorite of mine because of the climbing roses.

Those are just lovely... I am growing some lacecap hydrangeas from cuttings, but I do have to track down some Annabelle hydrangeas in honor of my DD!

Oh Sue those look so pretty. I love the way hydrangeas look and yet I don't have any. I need to see where I can put them . Yours look like they are going to get sun...I see some in deep deep shade and some in full sun. I never know which to plan for. Any tips would be appreciated.

And that porch....well you know how I feel ...I bought a New Dawn because of you LOL. I hope it does half as well as yours . c

newdawn - My Annabelles turn green, but they sure are pretty when they're white. I can't remember the name right now, but I added a gorgeous hydrangea to my yard last year. It was something I had been searching for and couldn't find. We paid someone to do some landscaping in our backyard and they were able to get it. Well, since I lost the house in my divorce, I also lost my gorgeous hydrangea. I'm more upset about losing my plants than my house :)
