Like Moni, I love hardware stores, but the best in the world has to be our local Ace. Helpful people, always have what you need, willing to pool expertise to solve problems, this store is the tops! I even bake them cookies once in a while just to say thanks for all the help.

Hard question. There was a time I was a fan of Meijer's which is a superstore here in Michigan. They have every thing from Tofu to shells for my .30-06. Much of their advantage is simply turn over... the produce is fresh because they just recently put it out. In college I had 3 of them within a 30 minute drive... Okemos, Lake Lansing, and the old Lansing store. Recently prices have been rather steep on basic things like beans and rice. Walmart is my favorite because they are the only place open at 3am. I won't buy meat at Walmart... I used to buy the uncut round roasts but those went away. For awhile I could get decent lamb chops but I think I was the only person in the store buying them (Tuna loved lamb). We have a meat market in town that does nice pork. A 30 minute drive and I can get short loins for under $7/lb so they get most of my steak business. My "hamburger" I buy from a local dairy farmer which is currently $3/lb in one pound frozen packages... also get free hearts, tounges, and oxtails with my hamburger. Simply love oxtail soup. Local market had a baker that worked there for many years. When she retired the baked goods section just faded to nothing. The third time in my life a baker has retired and it changed my life. Growing up there was a wonderful bakery in the middle of town... cinnamon twists to die for. Then they closed and we had Stanley's. Then they closed so it is store bought bread or bake your own. Unions are not perfect but they can do good. Much of what is wrong with Unions is the direct planned actions of Management. A common stunt is to pick a Union worker and allow them to get away with anything... being late, poor work, being drunk, sitting around doing nothing. The idea is to make the normal workers angry at the Union for "protecting that guy". On the other side my non-Union employer has sent me for drug testing twice this year because I wear a respirator. I been sent for "medical" examinations and had blood draw 5 times this year by direction of the company. No I don't think people should be high at work and don't object to genuine concern about my health but things are getting a bit sadistic. Even after the company's comp Doc advised me to continue wearing the respirator the Plant Manager informed me the company does not think I need it. I now have written orders from my MD and if there is more trouble over this the next "doctor" will be a JD. Either God or the Devil loves me because my lawyers has been working for free... as the regulars here know I've a running battle over Safety issues (yes, I am the Safety person). : ) lyra

To pick only one, probably Menards. I like picking up on their free after rebate items. Plus they have good prices on most everything else too. I also like Walgreens. Surprising variety for a drug store and they get in some good deals occasionally. Other stores that deserve honorable mention: -Target: Has *really* improved in the past 10-15 years. Got to where I wouldn't set foot in there but now I go there often and they're really getting to be a force in the grocery business. A station found them WAY cheaper than Walmart on the variety of items they surveyed and they've surprised me with their prices. Plus I like picking up on their clearance sales. Fleet Farm: Nice place to wander but it bugs me they want your driver license and a signed contract to use the electric carts! Not from me you don't get that there stuff! But they have good durable clothes at reasonable prices, best place around to buy car, boat or mower batteries. K-mart: For certain things. Plus they've cleaned up their act in the past 10 years but have sunk so low that nobody realizes it. I used to like going to Big Lots but they're not convenient to get to around here so I haven't been there for a long time.

I definitely avoid edible items there unless it's a name brand and I verify expiration. I do buy spices there. Started going to Dollar Tree and bought a lot of stuff. Bought some of the LA Totally Awesome cleaner there to try out but you can get a bottle twice the size at Kmart for $2 so it's not the only place. I saw some people said in other places that they carry Greased Lightning and *that* is a great cleaner. Wanted to get some but they only had one bottle left and it was damaged. I won't buy aspirin or the like there, read too many credible tests that said they were inferior. I'd be very careful on foods. Dollar Tree items ($1 ea) I bought some salt-free seasoning to try out, eyeglass cases and pouches to use for various things. Some claim they sell umbrellas but the ones I've been to don't have them. Possibly it's seasonal. I bought pill organizers even a 14 day one that is $6-$10 most places. Decent quality dishpans that I like for organizing shelves and even using in the frig. Bullseye BBQ sauce, Blue Ice packs, binder clips, pens and some other office supplies, The Works brand cleaners are good too. I didn't need any but digital oral/rectal thermometers are $1. They even carry pregnancy tests and marijuana drug test kits if you need them. Got a couple of the windshield cleaners - the microfiber cloth on a stick. Combs, hairbrushes, mirrors, Peroxide, alcohol, kitchen utensils, etc. Bought a 3 pack of toothbrushes with the tubular containers for traveling. I bought some cell phone cases there and they have chargers too. I wanted to get some more wooden kitchen utensils but the quality was SO bad I passed. Splintery and just cheap so I said no. The aluminum disposable pans were cheaper at Walmart so I passed on those. Their paper products weren't a good value - so few sheets on a roll of toilet paper or towels, nope, no good. A couple of the big grocery stores in the area have $1 areas too that I make use of. One picnic we decided to bring a watermelon but didn't have a knife so we went to a dollar store and bought a serrated knife that worked fine for cutting it and I didn't care if it disappeared, which it did. Also picked up some aluminum trays to put meats in and used two, one to hold ice then one on top with the meat so it wouldn't get wet and it'd stay cool. Also buy serving spoons to use and toss when you are pretty sure you won't get them back from a pot luck. There's different "dollar" type stores. Dollar General and Family Dollar are all different prices so you need to watch your pricing. Dollar Tree is $1 for everything, and they take coupons too.

We are limited here, too. Hobby Lobby has quite a good selection of supplies (much better than Walmart, and their prices on equipment are about the same). However, the best here is a store that 2 fellow addicts just opened about a month ago. It's called Scrapbook Station and they have the prettiest papers, a huge selection of stickers by all the best manufactuers, a really fancy die-cut machine( for a nominal fee, they will cut your pictures in the shape you want), absolutely gorgeous albums--It's just paradise. Their papers and stickers are about the same price as anywhere else, but other supplies (punches, etc.) are really much higher. I won a free crop during their grand opening week, but I'm not going to use it until school's out--I want to stay all day and get the good out of it! i wish we had a Michael's around here. I hear they are about the best as far as chains go. Agree?

Like, Moni, I love the Goodwill store and also Salvation Army. Gary and I collect several things and you never know what you'll find!

Bookstores-Waldens, Barnes and Noble, Borders. I walk in and buy a coffee, pick out a book and "peruse" it while I drink. My daughter and I used to go there for "coffee breaks". I went there one Saturday night and got "hit on" by a cute guy looking for a date. I turned him down. I was just looking for a book. . .

Azzalea said mine-My favorite grocery store is Wegmans!! They are fairly new in Virginia, and they may be opening another one near us!!

After that I seem to end up in Target most often. I love to browse in bookstores, if I have some time and the kids are at home! lol

For atmosphere I prefer Target, but Walmart is cheaper so I do my major shopping there.

Thrift stores and garage sales...Used to be hooked on garage sales, have weened myself off them, only an occasional fix every now and then. I never have sales myself, just donate the stuff to charities, some of the things were even g.sale items.

My favourite store is a local shop called Home on Water St.. They specialize in bath and decorative items. I also like Wheaton's in Nova Scotia. For clothes, Laura's.

I'm not much of a shopper,but i like DAV thrift store,the .99 cnt and dollar stores .Wal mart,for the one stop shopping and any Nursery like Armstrongs,Cordovas etc.
I leave the grocery shopping to dh,he likes doing it,i hate it.
