Anderson French doors, good price?

Hi,

We just got a quote for Anderson 400 series outswing french doors from a local installer. They said $3400 installed, including tax. We have to pay for a permit. The doors are french outswing 400 series, basic, no grills, no extras, white interior, basic handles/locks.

Is this a good price in northern cal?

if its just a door replacement sounds high. if its a new door in a wall where there was no door maybe not. it depends.
get 3 estimates. maybe call lowes for an estimate. they install doors.

Is that because you are making a new opening,(inspection on the structural)? If that's the case:

$3400.00 sounds very reasonable.

Helenill - We are also using Anderson windows and I seem to recall they provide some information on their webpage about the best way to paint. I just wanted to chime in about your feelings of frustration and what seems to be a general lack of control over the building project. I am in the same boat! For example, I didn't even know that when I picked a window color (I had a three hour notice on that) I would also be picking a patio door color. Didn't realize the patio door was part of the whole window package from Anderson until I went by the house and there it was. Every week I get caught by one or two little surprises like that. It wouldn't be so bad if we weren't spending thousands of dollars! In my case, the problem seems to be that the builder does not realize how clueless we are to the whole process. They seem to think we've got as much knowledge as they do about the building process. Obviously, we don't. I'm just trying to go with the flow and keep the peace. Good luck.

If you are this concerned about the minute details of your doors (and you should be; they are costly and you do not want to be disappointed upon installation or years down the road), I highly suggest that you should dump the idea of buying them from HD or Lowes. It is rare that a big-box retailer will have someone that REALLY knows what they are dealing with. And you're right... their subcontract installers are not of the caliber that you'll want... HD/Lowes sets a very low unit price for installs, and their subs will just want to get it in the hole and get out to have any chance of making money. Go to a window & door specialty store, or local millwork supply that deals in the various higher-end products that you want. They will give you good information, and most have in-house installers or offer expert contractor referrals. Pella has their own stores; Marvin, Andersen, Jeld-Wen have excellent dealer networks; contact the manufacturers directly to find out about dealers in your area. I would like to reiterate that this is not ALWAYS the case... some HD/Lowes have really excellent and knowledgeable folks... although most are generalists, and know just enough more than you about the product to make you feel like you're dealing with an expert. are double doors preferred.... The question should be what do you prefer? What works best for your family? That would apply both to the one fixed vs. both moving question as well as the swing direction. Since you don't need screens, figure out which one interferes least with your movement in and out and the furniture on either side of the door. There's no right way, just the way that will work best for you.

The variation in pricing is truly amazing. At that standard size you can get doors for $300 - not Anderson but seem fine. Go up to $500 and you can get the blinds between the panes that you can open and close easily. These are for steel doors which are the cheapest. I've done a fair amount of research now and wood is definitely not the cheapest. Hopefully the exterior portion of yours is not just wood but covered with aluminum. Wood may look nice (if stained - if painted you can't really tell) but has the worst insulating capacity. Really most of the door is glass so it doesn't matter much. My comparative shopping is almost done. In the end HD- $550 and Lowes $650. So nearly double to get the 60 inch size. This is for steel with 15 lite mullions (external) and standard glass. Low E was about $80 more - mine gets a small amount of sun.

Hi,

No it is a replacement of existing French doors. Seemed high to me as well. The existing doors have a gap, I can see light under them, they don't fit well and swing into the livig room where we have the couch. We want out swing and a tight fit. I'm not sure why we need a permit but this guy said that the city requires one.

I'll look at Lowes and HomeDepot, but to be honest after reading so many horror stories about big box "install gone wrong", I question if this is a good way to go... Seems really hit or miss with the big box stores. Does anyone recommend HD or is Lowes better?

In our area, we only have h.d. who is the only game in town and contracts all installs from contractors as far away as 350 miles. Way more horror stories than positive here and it's trying to get the contractors back to fix a problem that's the hard part.

I would go to a reputable cabinet shop and get referalls to decent trim carpenter/door hangers in your area. You can check with lumber/building suppliers as well. This means purchasing the doors yourself and applying for the permit, then finding an installer. Ask family friends as well for referalls and always get more than one estimate w/ references especially those who are willing to show you past and present projects.
