Third September, not quite finished 2013 Birthday blocks

This is the finished top of my 2013 birthday blocks from this forum. I'm so touched that all these people contributed these blocks. I'm really happy with the top.

A friend from North Carolina who quilts was visiting here and she gave me an inspiration for the quilting. With all the blocks so different I wasn't sure where to begin, but we thought I might start with a center square in each block, then maybe just in the ditch around each one. Not sure yet. All ideas welcomed.

Today they started to put the forms up for the basement walls. They'll finish tomorrow and pour the concrete Wednesday. We will have 9 foot walls, 8 inches thick. We were surprised to see that they had already dug the hole for the septic tank and put it in! Loessismore.... your driveway looks alot like ours, what area of the country are you in?

Today is the last of the January birthdays for the Birthday Block Exchange group. (Happy Birthday, Andrea!!!) As you may remember, Kristene and I are alternating months for being the hostess for that month so I am the hostess for January. If all the January birthday quilters will e-mail me a few weeks after your birthday to let me know the status of which blocks have been received, that will be a big help so I can check on any that may not have been received. We really want to stay on top of things. Hopefully your report will be that all of your blocks were received. I hope everyone has managed to fit in a little sewing this month. My older daughter is expecting triplets this Spring so I have been busy making two baby quilts and Andrea (dragonflyUSC) - who is my younger daughter - made the third one. We are headed to CA soon for the baby shower and I will post pictures of the quilts after I come back. I don't want to spoil the surprise. It has been cold here and we have gotten snow twice since Christmas so that has been an adventure. Of course, when there was ice on the roads was when my sewing maching started to misbehave. Isn't that how it always goes? I struggled along with it and managed to get it through the two baby quilts so hooray for that! I'll be back to "visit" with you soon. Jeanne

Yes, magothyrivergirl - the Patchwork Pines quilt is to be suitable for a female/girl/teenager. Our new hospital in Orange, NSW, Australia, is still being built and is due to open in 2011. So the quilting group I belong to has made the Oncology Ward at our new hospital our project. While the hospital is being built, we are all trying to make quilts to stock up. Our existing hospital doesn't have an oncology ward - all patients with cancer must go to Sydney for treatment. So the new oncology ward will treat patients all over country NSW. The last 2 years my quilts have been blue, so next year I'm aiming for pink from the Patchwork Pines and really bright fabrics from Carolina Lilies. Dan, I was never a fan of the HST, measuring to the 7/8', sew on either side of the diagonal, cut etc., etc. This year I was introduced to the easy angle tool and while many quilters may poo-poo it, going to class and learning this tool has made HST a breeze for me. Kristene...It was a pleasure to meet you at the retreat this year. I'm glad you are enjoying the Amish country, it's just an hour or so away from my home base and I do marvel at the handiwork you can find in the area. Also, lots of great quilt stores...The old country store in Intercourse PA and the Log Cabin Quilt Shop in Bird in Hand PA (just a few miles apart) are two of my favorites for great fabric buys. Maybe you'll have a chance to check them out. Enjoy the remainder of your stay in the States...you're a lovely lady, so happy to have met you...looking forward to the Birthday exchange this year. I have no suggestions for quilting, but good for you for getting your birthday blocks together! I have 2 sets (pink/black and blue/yellow) in the tub with a bunch of other block sets. Thanks for the reminder!

Love it!!

I had a set of quilt swap blocks that all had stars. I chose to outline each star, 1/4" inside around each point. If you'd like to see it, I'd be happy to post pictures to give you an idea what it looks like.

It looks a lot like the beautiful blocks I received in 2007. I also made a small baby quilt (in the next post). I quilted each star individually, mostly SITD. I don't know why the picture is so blurry! I won't post the other one.

Lovely! You can't go wrong with blue & yellow. I have a BD block quilt in those colors as well. :)

How fun to see all of the different stars and color shades and how nicely it all went together. Also, a nice reminder to pull my B day blocks out and assemble very soon!
