Question re tipping

There's a thread on the Kitchens forum this morning about tipping delivery people. We are having a new sectional delivered. It's very large and will have to be carried up a flight of stairs. They'll also have to move the existing couch into the hall (to be picked up by Salvation Army). Do you tip in that situation? If so, how much is appropriate? (We've been hit-or-miss so far ---- we did tip our movers, did not tip the contractors' guys or the appliance or cabinet delivery guys, don't remember whether we tipped the RH delivery people who delivered our table and gigantic mirror).

Yes, you should tip delivery people who bring in heavy stuff (esp. since these companies pay them garbage in the first place).

I think it's $20 per person, esp. if stairs are involved.

You can Google it and get a consensus.

I just contributed to that thread--interesting!

I admittedly tip too much, not that that's a bad thing. But it's from having such low expectations of what standard service should be anymore. If a delivery guy smiles and says good morning, and then delivers the item unbroken, I get giddy about what great service was provided, when, in fact, it's what should have been expected. My expectations have been beat down over the years, and I'm easily impressed by a hint of politeness and undamaged goods.

I guess the argument for furniture delivery could be whether you paid for the service. If you paid for the service, and they deliver it, what, exactly, warrants a tip? Again, though, if the delivery person was polite and the furniture wasn't damaged, I'd be thrilled to pieces and give him a $20. A sectional up a flight of stairs may warrant $30.

The Salvation Army pickup? Yes, I would tip.

My experience is with growing blueberry shrubs, and I have tried different spacing at various times. The recommended spacing for highbush blueberry shrubs is 8 feet, & I agree with this number, to get the most growth and the greatest fruit yield. However, I have planted these shrubs two feet apart, to get a hedge established, as part of the landscaping. The shrubs are healthy, but they don't grow as wide or high as a properly spaced shrub. Fruit yield is reasonable for the size of the shrub. So my experience with "too close" spacing has been good, so far. It does not cause disease or any abnormality, it simply results in smaller shrubs.

Yes, there is a glitch over there in the cleaning tips forum. New posts are not being posted. graywings I saw your *test* post, so replies are making it through. Just no new threads. dd50, I fold mine in half, then half again like you, but then I roll them so they are more narrow and I can get two rows one in front & one behind. But...they are thicker so I can't stack them as high. If I just do the 1/2 and 1/2 fold they are too wide and don't fit well on the narrow shelves, oh the dilemma...lol

There are some tile pros on the board, so hopefully they'll chime in. In the meantime I have tiled a few areas of my own home and have a few thoughts: It would be worth a trip to your local library to check out books on tiling. There are a lot of not-so-obvious things about it that would be covered in the book -- some that come to mind are the mathematical calculations you'll want to do before starting, where to start, the use of and reasons for using a "beater bar", making cuts for outlets -- the placement of these may factor into your original mathematical calculations. It will also cover issues such as ensuring your tile goes up in a straight line, and the even grouting lines questions will be answered in there, too. To get even grout lines I us spacers, but some tile have them built in, and there are also some techniques to learn about spacers that will be discussed in the books -- the first time I tiled, I actually got part way through the job before I figured out I was using the wrong part of the spacer (I used the handle which was not uniform thickness) to space my tiles and they had to be pulled off and redone. I would also strongly urge you to have your first section be on the very least visible part of your kitchen, there will definitely be a learning curve, and you want the most prominent area to showcase you're best work. I'm assuming your tile is average thickness -- if you're using a heavy tile then I have a few more tips for you -- my last project (also my back spash) was a thick, heavy porcelain tile and I found out (the hard way that there are other techniques for heavy tile that I should have used.... so be aware, the weight matters, too.

Hi, What fun for her! Is it EFTours by chance? My son is taking a trip with them in June. I would be surprised if the tour does not include group meals? They usually do. I have no insight about cash needs. We went 7 or 8 years ago, and arranged a lot of the tours and such thru our hotel, the Royal Palms in Santa Cruz. I am sure the tour operator has done this many times so can give good advice. Generally, the exchange rate for cash USD will be far more favorable to the published rate, so cash is the way to go, but it has its attendant risks of course. We did not take any vaccines. You may want to consider getting the following from your Dr., just in case: Cipro, for intestinal distress, SCOP patches, for seasickness, and Diamox, for altitude sickness. I just used the Scop patches on a trip and they were so helpful. Made me a tad drowsy but totally solved motion sickness for me. We took Diamox in advance of our arrival in high altitude, and had mixed results. My one daughter seemed to get ill from it (though I can't be sure), so we all stopped taking it and were fine. But I know another family who could not have gotten thru their vacation without it. It felt odd to travel with 15 prescriptions (3 types for all 5 of us), but you don't want to have a problem on vacation in a lesser developed country ... I am sure she will have a blasT!

In general, I don't tip delivery people, but when they do something extra like move an existing piece of furniture, I'll give them $10 - $15 per person and say something like, "Thanks and have lunch on me."

Recently, I had a glass table top delivered and all they had to do was bring the top in and set it on the table. They kept futzing around with it and I could tell they were trying to elicit a tip. I gave them a nice smile and a thank you...no cash.

Nobody gives me a tip for showing up to do my job, so I don't feel obligated to tip others for doing theirs. However, when they provide a valuable extra service like one of my mail carriers and the parcel delivery people who leave my packages by my front door which requires them to climb a flight of stairs, I'll leave them a gift card two or three times per year to say thanks.

I tend to tip delivery people, movers, etc.. since I suppose they are not paid much, so I feel the extra $ help them out.

I'd tip them if I could. I'd probably tip them $10 per person in my area.

Oops. I had no idea! I just had a large box delivered full of patio furniture. It was up some steps. Sorry delivery people!!
