I don't think I've ever seen those before. I like them!

I've wanted some of this variety for years. The price has held me back, but I should just go ahead and go for it! They sure are pretty!

If it were me I would stick them in the ground right away. That way they at least won't dry out and die on me. You may not get any bloom this year if they are something that needs chill to set bloom but I would think they would at least put up some leaves so you know they are alive. I've planted garlic in mid spring instead of fall like you are supposed to and it did ok.

If you don't plant them, they are surly lost. If you do plant them, what more have you got to lose?

Garlic produces more bulbils (small bulbs) than flowers in the flower head, if they produce flower stalks (scapes) at all. Grocery store garlic is usually an artichoke variety, which tend not to produce scapes, though I've had them produce some small under-developed scapes from time to time. Some of the hardneck varieties produce impressive scapes over 5' tall, but the flower heads themselves are pretty small, though the bulbils are interesting. BTW, if you want really interesting, as in bizarre, scapes, I have three words: Egyptian walking onions. Regular bulbing onions and leeks produce 3-4" globe-shaped flower heads which are usually white to pale purple. I'm not aware of differences between red and white onions as far as flower color, but there could well be. Most bulbing onions are biennials, so you might have to leave the bulb in the ground over winter to see flowers. Chives are best purchased as bedding plants or they can be started from seeds. They have very pretty little purple flower heads.

I read during a search to keep them dry in a cool place. That rules out the frig and sounds like a paper sack or mesh bag in the basement would be the thing. I am surprised by the lack of information and responses on this forum to those of us who have needed to dig up bulbs and transplant and posted questions regarding that. I hope more folks post responses to your questions.

Funny you should post that picture. I was in a New York City hotel lobby this past weekend and they had two enormous flower arrangements consisting of those purple onions. They were gorgeous. If I get around to it I'll post a picture.

Beautiful flower! Dumb me, I thought it would be an onion hanging from a string...

Look for ornamental Allium varieties wherever you purchase your fall planting bulbs. Mail order catalogs or websites offer the best selection and there are many different kinds to choose from.

"Globemaster "is probably the most well known, with those 8 plus inches flowers! I prefer the smaller cultivars, myself.

Allium bulbs should be planted at the time you would plant any other of your spring/summer bulbs. I love them!

Lily of the Nile look similar, I have them in the purple/bluish color they are just beautiful. I like the white also and will someday add those too.

All beautiful!

That is so pretty - I miss being able to grow cold-hours bulbs and perennials, such as I grew in Missouri.

Are those the same as or similar to Society Garlic? They sure look the same. Restaurants and business complexes use them a lot in their landscaping I suspect because they are beautiful and easy to grow here but ... they smell like a skunk to me and I can't hang out near them for any more than a couple of minutes because of the smell.
