Window seat in NJ climate - practical seating or just decoration?

Question for people with experience with window seats...

As part of our remodel, we'll be replacing a small window with a larger (wider) one in our daughter's room. There is a small loveseat in her room against that wall now. I always loved the idea of installing a bay window with a window seat there which would replace the loveseat and free up the floor space. But now when I need to make that decision (and pay the extra $), I am having second thoughts.

With the tall bay, there would be no way to keep the loveseat or even an arm chair, so the window seat would be the only seating besides a desk chair. My concern is that it may not be practical, could be too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer to seat by the glass, etc. It is a south-facing wall so I know our current old windows get very warm from the sun.

The alternatives would be either a flat window or a regular bay where she could display her dolls or grow a plant.

Any recommendations?
