Jenn Air Downdraft Replacement

I posted this message on the appliance forum but got no responses. Maybe you all have some suggestions.

I haven't posted here for a while, but I enjoy reading the postings daily. I have to replace my 12 years old downdraft range. After reading the reviews, I don't want to

invest in another one, although the one that I have has been maintenance free except for replacing the front control panel.

I have to have downdraft, so I have few options. I am considering a downdraft cooktop with an oven directly under. Am I missing something? Are there other options/suggestions? If I have to go with the oven under the

downdraft cooktop, what cooktop and oven do you recommend?

I do appreciate your response.

Have you thought about how the venting will hook-up? I was looking into replacing a 24-year-old Jenn-Air downdraft electric cooktop. I was advised to buy another Jenn-Air, because it would hook into the existing venting system under the cooktop without modification (mine is on an island). The box housing my downdraft is pretty bulky and eats up a lot of cabinet space, so I doubt I could fit an oven underneath.

I have a similar set up, and Halbert's right. There isn't room for an oven underneath a Jennair downdraft. In fact, almost the entire cavity underneath the cooktop is taken up by the housing.

I have seen a Dacor downdraft that sits behind the cooktop, instead of in between. I've heard it's more effective than the Jennair, which is kind of wimpy (at least for me).

I went to a showroom that has a working Jenn Air gas downdraft cooktop. I had decided to get one, to replace our old electric (coils!) downdraft cooktop. But I did want to check it out first. We turned on the ventilation, and as soon as I turned on the burner, the downdraft sucked on the flame itself. This was a deal breaker for me. You should definitely give one a trial run to see if this matters to you.

You will more than likely like the models without the trim. The trim can make it harder to clean and can catch crumbs. You're correct in the vent performance of these, however, Jenn Air just udgraded there vent. Not sure how well it works even though marketing has these as greatly improved. However, JA ceramic cooktop without downvent is 21 5/16 deep. Dacor makes a telescopic vent that is 2 inches deep. If this fits, it would improve your vent performace significantly although you would need to cut out a bigger hole. Cost is more too. Total depth you would need is 23 5/16.

While it's a little hard to tell your exact configuration, you may be able to use modules to fill the space, with SS fillers if (when) it doesn't fit exactly. What may be a larger issue is the duct size required for an effective 48" downdraft, which would be at least 8" and probably closer to 12" versus what's currently in for the Jenn Air (ours 20 years ago was 4"). You may want to consider an external blower. I have cooked on an induction cooktop with a 1200cfm downdraft (15" riser) with an external blower and I was impressed by the quietness and the volume of exhaust it moved. Certainly not as effect as an overhead hood, but still seemed to clear pans on the rear burner, and looked rather cool. Such a config would probably be deeper than your current Jenn Air so you would have some additional installation work. Also be advised systems like this are not cheap.

Thanks scole250, it's a log house so going through the walls is not an option. There are ceiling fans and lots of windows (there is a sun room a couple of feet away as well where the walls are nothing but opening windows) so the air can really move when the downdraft isn't up to the job (it's not great but it does part of the job). Actually while writing this response it occurs to me the house smells wonderful (curry) and the RH at the stove is 25% (cold outside and there's a fire in the wood stove) so maybe we don't need a solution. No solution is an option I never considered...until now.

Only 12 years? What happened to it? Mine is still going stong after 28 years.
We are putting a Wolf downdraft in. I'm putting a wall oven in another place on the island put I could put an oven in with it.

Thanks for your thoughts, halbert and yandj. I didn't realize that the cooktop would need so much space. I am not sure yet as to whether I want to give up cabinet space for an oven.

LOL, mavia-2000. My range is still going strong. The fridge died and we replaced it with a Samsung SS. Since the dishwasher sounds like a plane overhead whenever I have to turn it on, I am considering replacing the dw and the range with SS. It is good to know that I might have sixteen
years to figure out the cooking arrangement.

What Wolf downdraft are you getting?

Could I also use the Dacor or Wolf telescopic downdraft behind a slide in range? I have about two and a half inches between the slide in and the backsplash. I could hook it to the venting system that is already in place.

I got the 45" Wolf. Mine is in an island and will be hooked up to old venting system. I know many people here say not to go with the downdraft but I've never had a problem in 28 years. The top (telescopic part is only 2 1/2 inches but then you need another 3 " for the works of it. If you could design the counter just right, you could bump out your stove like some people do with their sinks.
