Charity quilts 6 & 7

Needed to take a break from sewing, so thought I would catch up and post next two finished quilts for the children's home. One broken FMQ foot (cheap freebie thrown in when I bought my machine) to report but lots more learned and my FMQ skills are improving.

What a terrific way to learn and improve your skills! You are so generous. I wonder ~ how many hours you have spent on this charitable project?

Rosa, The original yellow & blue is called Striped Stars and is from the book 101 made-to-fit quilts for your home. I kept all of the left over parts in a ziplock back and knew I needed to use them. I had to supplement the yellow with other from my stash to finish it. Kiendu, yes, I am doing the FMQ on my machine. I have a Pfaff 7570. I can't do a large pattern, but to meander is okay. It does take practice and I have take one class. I usually manage to tug all of my quilts - up to queen size - through this machine. I have only sent one quilt out to a long arm quilter. I am working on another one from a "baggie" full of triangles left over but it will probably need to go to a nursing home - the colors don't really look like kids. Sue

I recently had an experience myself and know just how you feel. I too quilt for charity. I have enjoyed patchworking different blocks, trying new ones. Well recently I was told we will need 200 more quilts by Sept. So now its just sewing a whole cloth front and back together. Its just like work now and no fun. I thought of just stepping back too. I've decided to make some the fast way and still do some the way I want. That is just too bad someone comment had such an effect. The whole point is the love put into the making of special one of a kind quilts. Your group will still have the the issue of some made better. Hopefully you will not be the only one and they will go back to how it used to be.. tish

Theresa, hope you get back to sewing soon. The rest of you were busy and got at least some sewing done. I am with Theresa...thought about sewing/quilting but got nothing done in that area. Saturday was cleanup day so not much else was done. DH and I did get to Tims for coffee/tea and a Fruit Explosion muffin. During the late evening DH went salmon fishing and caught 2 Atlantic salmon. Fresh salmon for supper this evening....looking forward to that! He was so pleased with his catch but we totally forgot to take pics. Sunday was a 50th birthday get together for my brain-injured brother....at the hospital. You could tell he was enjoying all the fuss although he did say he was home and later told me he was at a friend's house. He lives in the moment....a blessing for him, in a way, but difficult for the family to witness. He has very little short term memory. We had 18 family/friends show up with gifts and best wishes. Lots of pics taken and lots of chatter. This week I have promised myself I will get back to serious quilting and to watching my diet. I've been feeding my emotions and that is not a good thing...... lots of 'bad' food. ~Geraldine

I didn't do any sewing over the weekend, but I made up for it through the weekdays previous. I have my top done and sandwiched (whoo-hoo!) and now I'm contemplating how to quilt it. I also informed DH that I would very much prefer a gift cert. from the LQS so that I can take the long-arm classes instead of the .22 pistol that he really really wanted me to want. LOL! I do want to eventually learn to handle and shoot but I'm not ready, I have an intense fear of being around guns and I've got to figure out how to get around that. I think he was a little bit bummed out that I REALLY would rather have the long-arm class, can you imagine?? :O

Very nice job! They are both beautiful, but I especially like the 2nd one... how sweet of you to do that... How did you manage to break your foot? :o)

Thank you everyone. I have had help. Another lady was piecing as fast as I could cut! I'm not sure what made the foot break. All of a sudden the needle stopped because a plastic piece had cracked and then bent the unit, which the needle then hit. High quality needle though, it didn't break and is still going strong. I couldn't believe it.

Some of the Seeds N Stitches gang might recognize fat quarters they had swapped with me. LOL Just finished another and will post pictures, probably when they are all done this week.

Bev, What a great project! What size squares are you using? It looks like the quilts are about twin bed sized - perfect for the children in Africa. They will be wrapped in your love. TFS

Those are 8" squares. These two quilts are the same size, but the others all seem to vary, but that's ok because the kids are all different sizes too. LOL The kids used to just sleep on a very thin pallet on the floor, but they now have beds with about a 3" mattress, no box springs. If they don't need the quilt to cover with, they will fold it to sleep on and provide extra cushioning. I figure the larger quilts are good to in case the mom's with AIDS are ill, they can use the quilt too.
