OK, what's the weirdest thing you ever used quilt blocks in? I made my little Tubby ( Italian greyhound, probably a mix) a winter coat because they don't tolerate cold well, and he has more pink skin than fur. I wanted it to match his personality and went scrounging around my stash for fabric. I ended up using a fat quarter I didn't need and a Card Trick quilt block reject from a previous block lotto.

He loves it so much, he wears it to bed at night. He's modeling it here, as he is trying to catch a moth who got in the kitchen. It's lined in soft flannel and I used poly batting. Now, I need to knit him some warm leggings. LOL.

I made a fabric sack to store all the components of a mandolin I picked up at a garage sale. One of the razor sharp slicing things, not the instrument. The dog coat beats my sack hands down.

Is Sunset's Red Horizon Naturally Wilty?

(If this variety is common enough that many of us are growing it from commercial sources, whatever happened to the Rostova beefsteak? I checked the TGS website and they do indeed offer "Rostova", but as an oxheart.) Cut and Pasted from the JUne 17th post above: Starting in late 2005, we split the variety into two breeding programs - Rostova Extra Special Selection (which were bred down exclusively from the few remnants of the original imported seed collected in Russia in 1999) and Sunset's Red Horizon (exclusively down from Tomatofest stock). Our intention is to eventually offer Sunset's Red Horizon and Rostova Extra Special Selection side by side. (Note: Rostova Extra Special Selection is due to be available again in the Fall of 2007). Lelia, We know that the original Rostova was a beefsteak and that's b'c thjat's how it was described and that's how many of us grew it who got seeds early on. You see above that the original supplier is going to go back and try and capture that original beefsteak version. You ask what happened. Tomatofest would have started out, and did, woith the correct version as recieved. There rpobably was a cross -pollination somewhere b'c both fruit shape and foliage are different from the original. And that's probably how this wilty oxheart came to be. There's also the possibility that b/c of the genetic diversity found within a variety that the plants used for seed production were a bit off. Stray seeds of another variety used for seed production would be so remote as to not be a viable option. Especially since TGS would have had their seeds produced and came uip with about the same phenotype for Rostova as Tomatofest now offers. TGS would have gotten their seeds, more recently, either from Tomatofest or perhaps from someone who listed Sunset Red Horizon in the SSE Yearbook. I didn't take the time to go back and look at back SSE Yearbooks but in the 2007 Yearbook it's not listed by anyone as Rostova and just one person lists it as Sunset Red Horizon and the description sounds like the original Rostova, that is, just regular leaf foliage and no mention of any heart shaped fruits. YOu mentioned commercial sources ( plural). Other than TOmatofest and TGS where else is it being offered? Again, this AM I didn't take the time to Google it. Carolyn

I was thinking more along Laura's viewpoint. Perhaps she doesn't like the traditionally pieced quilts. Perhaps a more modern design/fabrics would please her. I have found that in my time of doing commissioned quilts is that there is rarely a non-quilter who can visualize a pattern done in fabrics different that those in the picture. They may actually like the pattern if it's done in a different fabric, color scheme or whatever. Perhaps search 'images' on google and see if there's something there that appeals to her taste. Then decide if you'd want/can do something like that. Another thought would be to take her to a quilt shop and let her look at fabrics. There are some really cool fabrics (orientals or batiks come to my mind) that I'd never think/dream of using for myself...but I know others love them... If that's all too much right now, then wait until she matures more and finds her 'taste' for decorating and make a special one then.

Here are several All-By-Machine quilt-as-you-go methods that I am familiar with. First, several tutorials on how to join pre-quilted blocks all by machine on the TreadleOn website. Good instructions and photos. You can use this method with any pre-quilted blocks that can be joined with sashing. Treadleon Web Site - Joining quilted blocks with sashing all-by-machine tutorial There are two books by Sharon Pedersen that have patterns for quilt-as-you-go quilts that are reversible - two different designs on each side of the quilt. You piece and quilt the blocks one at a time, quilting each block as you go. She uses a similar method as the one above (but somewhat more elegant) to join the blocks. The second book expands on that technique; there are some patterns in that book that don't look like they've been joined with sashing at all. In both books, the instructions and illustrations are excellent. Once you understand the techniques, you can apply them to your own designs. These can be done all by machine. Reversible Quilts Two at a Time More Reversible Quilts 11 New Projects Another method that can be done all by machine are the Cotton Theory designs. You quilt individual units, that you join into blocks with wide seam allowances, fold the seam allowances under, then stitch with decorative stitches. You join the blocks the same way. In this method you are dealing with units smaller than an individual block. You can watch videos of how this is done on the Sewing With Nancy website. I think my most creative was the Nap All Day Bed I made for my cats. I made a pieced pillow, a hammock-like support, and a little patchwork quilt for it. Although since it's a bed, I guess it's not far enough off from a regular quilt to be considered very creative. I like it though and so do the cats!

Oh Kate, I surely remember the kitty daybed and the trundle. It was a classic and still brings a smile to my face! I promised myself if I ever found a little bed like that for my kitties, I'd copycat your idea. But, never did. LOL.

I use doll blankets as small projects to teach kids quilting, but they are more often used as either dog or cat blankets than for dolls. One young man (now nearly 20) still has his hanging in his bedroom as I learned to my surprise when I was visiting his mom.

That is one lucky doggie!! What a great idea and maybe you can quilt him leggings using Velcro to keep them on (that way his outfit will match.) LOL I love the little paw prints on the fridge...how cute.

That is so cute!!I helped my DGD make Halloween costumes for their dog for a contest, but it wasn't quilted.

Our full size greyhound loved to "dress up" - no kidding - she was never without "her accessories". I would make bandannas & scarves for the seasons and always special ones for the holidays. She would wear cool sunglasses and hats - she preferred visors -in the summer time-- heehee. I always made her costumes for Halloween - she was the TT greeter - the kids loved it - but she loved it more. She always wore those crazy reindeer antlers for Christmas. She was such a show-off! She was the best dog in the whole world - I miss her dearly.
calliope - thanks for making me remember how sweet she looked all dresses up. I definitely see the greyhound in your guy. He looks terrific in his new coat.
