How much can we do without much $ up front?
Comments (4)I've been looking at the same thing here the past few weeks. One thing that caught my eye was solar air heaters. They are glass over a dark surface metallic, an place for air to circulate and a warm and cold vent. I thought perhaps the same thing could be done with window coverings. ( curtains and shades ) A black layer toward the glass, a metallic layer then a light layer inside toward the living space. You can find NASA space blankets, for the metallic fabic for about $2 in the sports dept of most dept. stores. The other materials can be purchased easily. I'm trying it now. I put white cotton roman shades in the master bedroom today and put a metallic layer between the fabric folds. Next I'll put a black layer on the outside that I can remove in the spring. Below is the site that gave me the idea. Here is a link that might be useful: Clear dome solar space heaters...See MoreMy Builder just RUINED my 25K+ deck .. please help!
Comments (18)The cuts are nice and straight ... he used some sort of track/stop to run the saw along. We did have him sand yesterday (with the thought that if that doesn't work, anything else we'd do would be more drastic and the sanding wouldn't matter). It was pouring when we got home so I have to go outside now and see how much it helped. That actually isn't anchorseal, it's all splinters and chew marks ... it looks darker because those are the boards he put down last fall, so they have faded, and the chew stuff exposed the new wood. The screws are a little shiny, but they are countersunk a bit, so as long as you're not looking straight down on them (like I am here), it's really not too obvious ... plus I thought they'd go better when the deck is gray (and if I stain the stain will fill the little sink holes and obscure them a bit). Anyway, I'll post an update tonight with some new pictures ... I know he did go get "another" new blade (with 60 teeth) after we yelled at him, so perhaps the few remaining boards to be cut will be better. Do circular saw blades really run "backwards"? That's what he said ... Thanks for all the support guys! It probably wasn't as bad as I made it out to be but I was REALLY upset when I first saw it (after all, all the other cuts he made on the deck were perfectly smooth). Thanks again, Birgit...See MoreHow much remodeling to do

Comments (53)I agree with much of the advice given already. We did a complete gut job remodel of our 1920 colonial revival home this past summer. My appliances - 36" Wolf dual fuel with center griddle 2 sub-zeros, 1 fridge and 1 freezer, placed on different walls (I can't remember the sizes) built-in under counter dual zone beverage fridge Bosch dishwasher Microwave is inside a cabinet, I think its a GE. My thoughts - I'll start by saying I was a real estate appraiser for many years and the advice to know your market is spot-on. The industrial range look might be popular in one area but comes across as too exotic in others. People seem to either love or are perplexed by my range choice. I agree with the advice of sticking to standard sizes to appeal to future buyers. I cook, at minimum, two meals per day from scratch and entertain often. My husband (who doesn't even know how to operate the new range) wanted a 48" but I stuck to my guns and went with a 36". I am very happy with the size and have yet to regret not up-sizing to the 48". Do not scrimp on the exhaust system. Wolf/Viking/etc range put out a lot of heat. We are in the construction business and I got lots of valuable advice from peers. All my designer contacts suggested counter depth fridges. This might be region-specific. I love my subzero. Its shallow enough that nothing gets lost (a problem with the old fridge) and the produce drawers have changed my life. Almost nothing goes to waste anymore....See Moredainaadele
