Franke Large Bowl Undermount Sink

Hi all,

I am looking for a large (30'x19' - exterior) single stainless sink. I found this one on Costco's website and it seems like a good deal.

The only thing I noticed is that the drain is in the middle - not in the back. Any thoughts on this? Is it really better to have the drain at the back?

Anyone have this sink? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm looking for the same thing. I'm not sure I could compromise on the drain placement. I'm considering the 30" Franke Orca

Lucy2nd: Is having the drain in the back really better? I guess I have always had sinks with drains in the middle, so I don't know the difference. Enlighten me please :)

One fact: 16 gauge is a better quality sink than 18 gauge and likely to be quieter. That accounts for some price difference. As long as the size, depth and drain placement are what's required, 16-gauge stainless sinks are a fixture where money can be saved. The x factor is whether the grid or any accessory needed is included or not. I've used a top of the line Julien sink and an 18-gauge Elkay. The maintenance is the same, they will both give a lifetime of service and they are both cleaned in the same way. The difference can be the surface finish (mirror, brushed, satin etc) and how that choice works vs expectations of how the sink should look both during use and after cleaning. Ditto on ditch the dish drainer.

You can buy the heavier 16-gauge for the same amount of money or less than some brands' thinner 18-gauge, so why buy the thinner gauge. As has been mentioned, Kraus is a good brand that sells 16-gauge sinks--and throws in the sink grid which can be another $50-$80 from brands like Blanco. There are other sink brands that are 16-gauge - do a search on this forum for recommendations. The Franke and Blanco sinks tend to be expensive even though they are the thinner 18-gauge SS - you are paying up for the Franke or Blanco badge on your sink. I advise against the 50-50 configuration for a sink in a 33" cabinet. A 50-50 will mean that neither side is big enough to soak anything, and you won't be able to wash anything without always hitting the divider. If you must have a divided sink, look for a 70-30 configuration so that one side is big enough to wash pots and pans. Or perhaps a 60-40 - still better than a 50-50. My real recommendation is that unless you have a 36" cabinet, you should get a single-bowl sink. A 36" cabinet is wide enough to allow a 2-bowl sink to have at least one bowl of good size. But if you really like the 2-bowl configuration with a 33" cabinet, then at least do not get the 50-50 style.

You should think about how deep you want the sink to be. My DS has a REALLY deep sink. It's great for hiding mess (if you have an open concept kitchen and you want to hide things til you have a chance to clean up for instance). But I was helping out at her house during an illness recently, and I found that my back started hurting after a lot of hand washing. I hand wash at home a lot and never found my back hurting. So you might want to think about the depth and what you would like to prioritize. The Kohler Riverby isn't all that deep, but it is big, so I can put a whole roasting pan or large baking sheet in there for soaking without have to put them in slanted. That is more a priority for me that a super deep sink. I'm sure there are many others to choose from, just wanted to chime in with this one, which I like a lot.

I think that is the sink I just ordered. I have heard that having the drain in the back is better - but for the life of me, I don't remember why.

It's easier to store more stuff under the sink if the drain is in the back.

The terminology is "offset drain". The advantages of an offset drain are, first, as Judi82 mentioned, there is more room under the sink. Since the drain pipe isn't smack-dab in the center there is more room for disposal, hot water dispenser, cleansers, etc. Secondly, you can set pans down in your sink without covering the drain hole. This seems like a minor point, but once you have it, you don't know how you could've had a sink without it.

Another sink you may want to consider is the Kraus, which has similar dimensions to the one you linked in your OP, but it is 16 gauge instead of 18 gauge (i.e. the Kraus stainless is slightly thicker), and does have an offset drain. I also like the .75 inch radius corners which means they are contemporary sharp corners, but not too sharp. I'll link to two sites. The Overstock site has a detailed description of the sink. The Expressdecor site doesn't have a detailed description, but has the better price, 15% off with coupon code, free strainer and free grid. The free grid is particularly nice, since grids can cost $60-80 additional usually.
