What you may see as "boring" is also soothing, restful, uncluttered and lets the granite be the main attraction.

Actually I also like it better without the accent tile, and then you don't have to worry about the outlets interrupting the pattern either. It looks ok with the glass tile, but I do like letting the granite have the starring role and the subway tile a supporting role.

joannaca....I am pretty close to you but I think you have me beat! Although, this entire house has been made over on a very tight budget so this fits right in!!

countrygal - The tile is just called Bisquit 3 x 6 gloss (not real creative with their names) and it is $4.80/sq ft. They have to order it for me b/c they only stock the 4x4 and 6x6 and some odd pieced in the bisquit color. Now, the white 3 x 6 gloss they stock and it is $2/sq ft ($.025/tile!!) For the test sample, I just had them cut some 6 x 6 tiles in half to make sure I liked it (not going to send 2 backsplashes back!)

The glass tiles come in 12" x 12" sheets and it is called Cosmopolitan Neutral (there are those exciting names again). It was $10 per sheet and using 2 rows of glass for the border, I can get 6 feet out of it so it works out to $1.60/ft.

For the window, how about a Roman Shade in the darker color of the tile, hung from ceiling height (hidden by your valance)? Your window would look taller and I think the colors would blend nicely.

I like it with and without the glass tile. I would probably go without, particularly if it cost too much to change the sockets.

I will say contrary to what others have.

I think the tile reads dull and dusty not because it is but when against the whiteness of the cabinets. Someone else here had the same situation where the off white tile looked muddy against the white cabs. Whites are very difficult to do right especially when they are set against each other. I would recommend a white to match the cabinets or something totally contrasting.

Pharaoh...I know what you mean about the color but I think it might be the lighting of the photo. The cabinets are a creamy white and below is a photo of the tile right next to the cabinets. In the picture, the piece next to the cabinet looks accurate and the background looks grey. It is getting dark now so I will have to wait until morning, but I wonder if I will need under cabinet lighting so it doesn't appear this way. I tried bright white first and it was really off. I also tried dark but it looked like a tunnel. I fell in love with the granite when I saw it but never took into consideration the backsplash!!

I vote yes for the subway tile, I think it's perfecto! I like it better without the glass border and I think the paint color in the room visible to the left in the photo would be divine above the window. I know it's difficult to mix creams and whites but I don't think it reads "dusty" at all because the cabs match your trim, the tile is picking up cream from the gorgeous granite and (if I'm seeing correctly) that latte-ish color paint is really joining the flow.
It's looking beautiful! Congrats on finding something inexpensive that works, I LOVE it when that happens!!!!

I like it... but agree that it very nicely matches the granite but not as much the cabinets. I do prefer the glass accents. They blend with your granite beautifully, offer contrast, and draw attention down from the slight off color next to the cabs.

So pretty! I am almost always the one voting for ultra simple backsplashes, but in this case I love the addition of the accent tile - I think it really pulls the tones up from the counter and just brings all home. Looks gorgeous & purposeful but not matchy-matchy. I say move the outlets!

I think its perfect - simple & just the right color. I prefer it without the glass - your granite is too pretty to have something else competing with it.

What I love most about it is what you said: I keep going back to this simple pattern. There's something about it that speaks to you in its simplicity, with or without the accent strip. Personally, I think it looks great either way, but I am one of those who prefers simpler, so I lean toward just subway. But if you want the granite to stand out, either ones of those accomplishes that purpose.

Yup-either plain or with the strip- I think simple is best for most of the kitchens seen on GW. I think owners of most of those "pop" backsplashes will find them distracting and annoying once the novelty wears off.

I like just the subway. And as long as you say it matches IRL, then I'm totally onboard. Just make sure it matches with the under cabinet lights if you have them. Mine make everything creamier (but I figured out it's not the lights, it's the natural wood color of the bottom of the cabinet doing it!)

Laughing because you seem to have a 50/50 opinion split on this one. Personally after going back and forth on your pics I think without will enhance your granite. Although I love glass tiles and think you picked out a winner as far as blending with your granite I think it draws your eye to the tile and not the beauty of your granite. Good luck, either way its going to look beautiful and I think you'll like it so much better than the last backsplash.

I'll add to the confusion - I like the glass tile. I have a plain subway tile backsplash and wish I had done some sort of accent tile. The border you found is so perfectly coordinated with your granite - I really like it!

I would add the glass tile but I would place one row above the first subway tile. That way it will fit behind sink and around kitchen. Why not add the tile??

I'm changing my mind and voting for the glass tiles although I think either way would be fine.

Great choices! I really like the glass accents with the subway tile. It adds charm and a little of your personality without being distracting. But it would be great either with or without.

I prefer it without the accent tile. I like the beautiful granite to stand alone. You have calming colors and I just like the simplicity of it without the glass tiles. Sometimes less is more, right! You have a great view out you window.

Hi, I live in Oakland, California and i'm in the process of getting an estimate for a tile backsplash. I have a section that is similar to your back splash over the sink and we have a window in a similar position. In addition there will be a backsplash over the range/oven-this wall is perpendicular to but continuous with the back splash of the sink (an L). We have one other small area in an opposite corner to backsplash. We're using 3 x 6 porcelain tile and the in total, the area is 30 sqft. Does anyone know a reasonable price for such a job?

I think the accent tile works really well, adds a little extra & doesn't strike me as competing with the granite at all. (This is saying something, coming from a person who loves subway tiles & is generally pretty "ehhh" regarding most accent tiles / granite -- but I love your choices here, very nice!)

Another vote for the accent tile. While remaining neutral, it adds just enough interest to break up the "plainness" of the monochromatic subways.

I think your choices are very nice, and to me, the glass accents actually bring out the colors in the granite. I saw that immediately before I even saw the photos without the glass accents. Because it is used as an accent, my eye immediately went to the granite to pull those colors from it. If it were a wall of only glass mosaic, I think it would be too much competing with your lovely stone.

Either way, it works really nicely with your granite, but I do tend to favor the glass accents.

Bosspaige, the same thing happened to me. I picked my granite without considering the backsplash. It tooks months to make a decision! I wound up keeping my backsplash without accents. But, this is something only you can decide. The thing about these accent strips is that your eye will always go to them first. When I finally picked my tiles, I wanted them to be looked at, but then move on to look at the next thing in the kithcen.

I like the accent and think it would be best lower so it can run under the window by the sink. I think it enhances the granite. JMHO :-)

I wouldn't use a multi color trim. I'd go with metallic bronze, black or brown- depending on those dark spots in the granite. i think I'd run it either over the switch plate, or just below it.

I like the glass (I've seen it in person)but I'd lower it one subway row. I think it works wherever you put it. I vote glass accent tiles.

Love it, but I'd like to see a mock up of the glass liner one subway tile up from the counter so it doesn't break up the field tile in the middle or close to the middle as much. Can you try that and post a pic?

I am leaning towards putting in the glass accent strip but am not 100%. I am going to have to invest in the Scotch Tape company but here are pictures with the accent strip at all the other heights. Sorry they are not the best pictures.

I like the one row up version. It draws your eyes towards the granite, rather than up towards the cabinets which are less interesting.

I agree with janet 425 - I really like the glass one row up where it accents the granite - and also it appears that it will continue right under the window.

I love your tile and granite. But one thing...if you have the electrician move the outlets also have him flip them over, they are upside down (with a 3 prong outlet the third pring should be on the bottom).

I like the accent tile and think the one 1-2 rows up aer the ebst. I like the 1 row up one the best. I think this is a really nice classy match with your granite. It's great :)

I vote for one row up, for exactly the reasons above. It is a great match for the granite, and at that level, brings the granite even more attention. Great choice!

What a perfect complement to your granite! Love the one row up placement for your accent. It draws your eye to your granite and grounds the backsplash. I think the accent row high up seems top-heavy/unbalanced.
