how much credit should we ask for?

Our contractor installed premade cabinets, counter and sink in our garage for $1400 (we paid for the home depot cabinets & sink, he picked them up) We probably agreed to too high of a labor fee but it too his guys about 2-3 days and it actually came out decent. We bought 1 large sheet and 1/2 sheet of laminate counter from home depot. They damaged the edge of the laminate so that the surface pattern is stripped on the edge about 2 inches width and 4 inches length
the integrity of the counter itself I don't think is affected. it's just the look - doesn't look new.
they otherwise did a good job installation i'm willing to live with it if we receive a credit but have no idea what to ask for. any suggestions in handling this are appreciated. thank you

Ask HD the price to remove and replace, including the cost of the counter, present that to the contractor with the option for him to accomplish the work, at no additional charge to you.

It's called, "marjet value."

Are you sure the contractor damaged the counter you provided? Was the counter a pre-made post form counter pulled from the racks? If it's on the side edge there are pre-cut pieces you can get to repair it. Things can be confusing when the homeowner buys the materials....

You are being premature. Some things can't be lived with at any price. Some things can. And "how much" depends on the brand and age of the appliance as well as the degree of damage. A Wolf with a dime sized barely there dimple would be different than a Maytag with a football sized dent. As with any negotiation, the first offer from the other guy gives you plenty of clues as to what the result will actually be. As a FYI, most people expect entirely too much of a discount compared to what they'll end up with. If you're expecting half off, then the retailer had much rather take the appliance back and deal with the insurance claim than to give you a discount. And then you'll have to wait for the new one to be shipped.

Sue36 - For the first six years that sofa was in the living room of our former home, where it virtually got no use (we had a huge kitchen that opened to our family room and that's where everyone always congregated). However...for the last 8 years the sofa was in the living room of our current home (no family room) where we sat on it every night. "We" includes our little Bichon and, for four years, our college-age son and friends. But I did keep it covered with sheets much of the time, on the seats, rear cushions and arms. It's not really white, but two-toned, more of an ivory with pewter. The fabric's condition was pretty incredible, not the slightest bit of wear, and you can see that the upholstery in the cushions and arms remained as full and firm as when new. I took care of it, yes, but it was a really good quality piece to start with. Like I said, the first person to come see it didn't hesitate for a second. In spite of its age, $495 was a very fair price for the condition of such a wonderfully made piece. We recently remodeled and added a great room that's open to our kitchen (No more living room - we re-purposed it as our dining room now). We put a leather sectional from Macys in the great room, and I have no doubt it won't look nearly as good in 14 years -- I wonder if it'll even last that long!

AuntJen, keep that baby and make the bench. Check with a local welder and see if they can cut it for you and then weld it into place. I'm sure there's a welder that has a small business that wouldn't charge too much. It would be great to keep it in the family. My brother had a twin like that, but I have no clue what happened too it. I'm working on a bench from a twin wood bed. If I found one like yours I'd head to a welder for sure. If you want to do this I can help you figure out where the cuts need to go since I've done this on other beds before. Just not metal. The measurements would be the same though.

I have purchased a number of older homes, and this sounds like par for the course for me. All this "money pit" and "walk away" stuff is perplexing. If you want a new home, then get one. If you want one from 1960, it is going to have systems near the end of their lives and some items to repair. Anything already disclosed or already visually obvious is off the table. No Seller is going to rebuild the deck for you, or replace a roof that is not leaking. You are buying what you see. The only reason for inspection is to reveal unknown issues you will have to deal with in the future. I'd ask for repair of the electrical issues because those can be safety issues. Then evaluate the cost of a new roof and a new deck, compare that with the cost of a similar house in perfect new repair, and ask for some reasonable dollar amount or amount off the purchase price. If you cannot afford to repair these items, think twice about an older home.

yes, it was a premade post form counter. I met him at HD and paid for the pallet of material. The damage is just a few inches away from a sink so it may not be repairable but I will ask him what he can do.

Home Depot "pre-made" formica counters the are "pre-formed" with a bullnose, back-cove and a 4" backsplash, and end caps that install with an Iron. They are also available with 45's on one or both ends.

They also sell particle board, formica, adhesive and a variety of wood and metal which can be applied to the front edge, when the counter is "post-formed," IE, the particle board and formica are cut and fitted, glued and assembled.

Those countertop pieces are inexpensive, and often most of them are damaged on the store shelf. The times I've installed them, I spend as much time picking one without damage to an edge. Also, I think your install cost was very reasonable. (Just my two cents.)

It sounds like the end of the counter surface, not the edge, being you say a 2" by 4" area. If it were damaged on the shelf they would have easily seen it, and should be checking the material for damage and defects, before installing.

Did they tell you they had damaged it?

For a garage, I don't think a discount is necessary. If it bothers you to look at or you think it will not hold up well over time, then replacement is in order if it is the top surface that is damaged, not edges of a type that can be replaced. I guess if you find you were overcharged for the install, a discount would serve some purpose since they didn't deliver a top notch result..

The amt you paid comes out to $29/hr per worker ($1400 / 3 days / 2 workers / 8hr-day).

How many cabinets? Was this really a 3 day or a 1 day job?
