And I don't mean to hijack this post, but I've used the gitd thread quite a bit. I absolutely love it! I usually use it in the top and bobbin but I think it would be fine to skip it in the bobbin.

I don't know how many kinds there are but there's only one that I found at Joann's. It's with all the other thread and they usually only have it in white and a very pale yellow. I've seen it on line in pale pink and blue as well.

I didn't have any problems with it breaking.

Besides quilt tops, I've also used it when making fabric bowls then sewed gitd beads around the edges of the bowl. Very cool when the lights get turned off.

The thread doesn't glow very bright unless it's had direct lamplight for several minutes so it's more of a novelty than a design feature. But it's fun and people will love to see it. I recently used it on a Halloween quilt that I'll hang outside the front door during October. I'm eager to see if it is noticeable. I'm thinking of replacing the porch light with a black light and I think that will really make it show up!

Thanks Kate~ I 'll look at Joanns. I never look at their thread. I'll probably use it in both the top and bobbin. When my son was young, I put glow in the dark solar system on his ceiling ~ his friends loved it! I can't sleep with any light whatsoever, so no glow in the dark thread for me!
I tried a black light in our porch last year - it didn't provide enough light for the kiddies - and it didn't enhance the glow decorations - so try it before trick or treat night.... or save your money & buy more fabric ~LOL

Joanns often have other glow in the dark colors when all the Halloween fabrics are there. So go look now!! I've seen orange, green & others...but not year-round.

There isn't a Joann's near me, but Wal-Mart used to carry it. They had it in pink, blue, white and yellow (I know there are others, but my Wal-mart didn't have but those 4). I have used it in the top, bottom, and both. I like to use it to outline applique shapes or simple designs from the quilt. It shows best if you use a decorative type stitch, just straight stitch doesn't make much of an impact. I have not heard of a problem with it breaking, but haven't used it for all the quilting either.

I don't mean to hijack this post ;) but I use a florescent black light on Halloween--it's an old aquarium light, and I've got one that came in a pet urine cleaning kit (cat pee glows under black light.) Incandescent 'black lights' are no good, but the flourescent ones are much stronger and brighter.

On Halloween, I prop the little one up on a bucket inside a metal garbage can with a couple of inches of water at the bottom. I feed it chunks of dry ice for peak trick-or-treaters and the black light makes all the fog glow purple. One year I put the candy bowl down in there, too, and dressed up like a witch--the bowl gets completely hidden and I'd reach down into the glowing fog for a piece and cackle. I stopped that when one little girl ran away without her candy!

I was in Joann's near us and they did have the thread it was white and another pink. If you don't see it ask,that's what I did.
