Introducing Lena & Ole; the start of my new colony, 1 pic

They're not the scores of Purple Martins that invaded the housing we offered while living on base, but they're the seeds to my new colony.

Perched on the upper left is Lena, a rather bedraggled, cold, tired, female and, in the center right, sit Ole, an itchy male.

The gourds are stuffed with pre-made nests of wood shavings and a generous sprinkling of Sevin. Any mites they arrive with are long gone in a day or two; this also promotes a higher fledgling rate.

That's a decoy on the arm behind the female. There's a second male hanging around the rack, but he didn't want his photo taken.

This was taken May 10, the day after they arrived (and the day before our last skiff of snow.)
