Brown sugar but I have some dried cranberries so will try them tomorrow. Better go put the package on the table or I will forget. LOL

Brown sugar and real butter, must have toast on the side. I know oatmeal is good for you (even better without the butter and brown sugar lol), but I rarely have it.

Dates, raisens, pecans, and a little brown sugar. Earlier in the week, I had fresh apple, brown sugar and cinnamon. Sometimes I use dried apricots, etc. etc. etc.

I make mine with a spoonful of applesauce, some brown sugar (or sometimes Equal), and a lot of cinnamon.

Aside from breakfast, I also like to have this at night if I'm really hungry. Very healthy and filling.

I love oatmeal, but we just don't make it here at home. If we're at a breakfast buffet and they have oatmeal, that's the first thing I get - a big bowl of it. I like brown sugar on mine, and, occasionally, a little bit of cream.

In a perfect world, I would have brown sugar, heavy cream, dates, cinnamon and pecans. In my real world, artificial brown sugar, 1 % milk, I do have a few chopped dates and chopped walnuts and cinnamon. we usually have oatmeal twice a week.

I prefer baked oatmeal, made with blueberries or peaches. Then topped with a little brown sugar and warm milk.

NO MILK! blech! lol the best way is with just brown sugar.

Never heard of putting butter in oatmeal. Somehow that just doesn't sound good to me, but maybe it'd be ok.

oh Glenda, now you are going to know my deepest darkest secret. I don't eat cooked oatmeal. Love, love, love raw oatmeal in yogurt, also with bananas. It has a nutty taste and guess I pretend that its nuts. I bought some steel cut a few weeks ago at whole foods and sprinkled it over my yogurt.

No milk for me either. I use water and butter, and sweetener, with a sprinkle of kosher salt. Buy my oatmeal by the 42 oz. size.

I have either oatmeal or oat bran almost every evening. I cook it in the microwave. I only add cinnamon and skim milk.

I love oatmeal but I stopped eating it because it spiked my blood sugar. :(

But when I did eat it, I put a little brown sugar on it.

before diabetes brown sugar and butter, sometimes a drop or 2 of maple syrup.

after diabetes splenda white or brown, and brummel and brown.
sometimes a few raisins or craisins.

oldgardener, I'm surprised that oatmeal spiked your blood sugar - that's interesting!

Everything that I had in mind has been mentioned, and quite a lot more. I usually rotate oatmeal, cream of wheat (farina) and multi-grain, similar to Red River Cereal, in winter, sometimes in summer.

Got a bucket of flax from brother's farm tenant when I visited and have ground some in the blender, to add to the mix in the bread machine, but will have to try some in the cooked cereals, as well.

Making oatmeal at home is easy, takes little time, is really nutritious and is about the least expensive food available. If one uses the large flaked kind, it may add to the experience to put the dry material into a pan/bowl and add water to let it soak overnight, which is quite useful also if one is adding raisins, as it gives them some time to bulk up in the water ... or one can drop a few raisins into a mug and add some water to let them soak overnight, as well.

Dressed up with some of the wide variety of suggestions offered herein makes it not only tasty but a real adventure.

Dates, nuts, brown sugar, cinnamon and 1% milk. The instant packets aren't terrible; I never travel without some of those, some packets of hot chocolate and an immersion heater.

suzieque, I tested my BS frequently after having plain oatmeal and it was always too high. I fought it for a long time but finally gave up the oatmeal. I know some other diabetics who have trouble with it too.

I really liked oatmeal because it helped lower my cholesterol.

I make our Steel Cut Oats with raisins then I add brown sugar, blueberries or whatever fruit we have on hand, walnuts and a dash of Nutmeg.

I cannot stand any hot cereals at all. But I like oatmeal cookies!

My son Jeff brought a MD's oatmeal with the fruit and it was delicious. I never gave a thought to putting fresh fruit on oatmeal...

Only fruity oatmeals I've had are the one's where the dryed fruit comes in the little packets with a serving of oatmeal. In those I like the peaches and cream.

I don't buy the oatmeal with the sugar and dried fruit already added. Too much sugar.

I'm using old fashioned right now, and usually use quick cooking.

I've never been able to eat oatmeal as such in a cookie ok.
I couldn't even stand the smell of it when feeding to my kids when babies .
