Gap Between Range Sides and Granite Counters

My range is installed with slight gaps between the sides of the range and the granite counters on either side of approx. 1/8 to 1/4''. I would like to fill the gaps with something to prevent crumbs and liquids (especially) from falling down the gaps and making a mess where it can't be cleaned without great difficulty. I'm pretty sure I recall seeing here someone recommending caulking around the range to close the gap. My contractor swears that can't be done -- the caulk will not stay in the gap, falling down over time, and you have to be able to move the stove out, if necessary, to get to the gas line. He says range manufacturers make stainless strips that fill the gap, but I've never seen that done by anyone here, so I'm skeptical. Also, I don't think the look would be right even if those strips are available. I would appreciate any advice on what you have done or recommend.
