I'm sorry, but if my dog had gone through that much to get home to me, there's no way I'd have the shelter take him. I would do whatever was necessary to keep him with me. JMHO

I agree...there is NO way I could give him up! I couldn't! Not after he showed the kind of devotion he did!

Amazing story!

What's the matter with those people? They don't deserve their loyal dog.

Thanks Glenda there has to be a special place in Hell forpeople like those. Well I have to say at least they didn't put the dog down.

That poor, loving, special dog. All he went throught to get home and they turned him away. I understand what they're going through, but I believe that having him with them would add to their healing as well as his.

I feel like offering to adopt him myself. Shame on them.

I didn't take it that the owners were giving the dog up for adoption. They just can not give Mason a decent home right now when they don't have one themselves. The surgery alone is going to be big $$$, and the dog is in the right place to be looked after. Only, I would have thought the vet clinic could have kept him. Perhaps they are over run with injured pets at this time tho.

I hope someone reads this story that would pay for the dog's care because I am sure the shelter doesn't have funds for this dog's surgery and care. They are probably overrun with animals after the tornado.

I too don't understand why the family didn't take him after the devotion he showed.

Perhaps he needs more care than they can give at this time. We don't know if they even have a home to live in, or if anyone from their family or close circle of friends was killed or is missing. It is not something I could ever do, but we really don't know their circumstances. They have been through hell, also. My heart hurts for all who have suffered in these devastating storms, human and animal alike. What a remarkable dog!

What judgemental people we have here! You have no idea what this family may have lost in this tornado or where they've had to turn for shelter or what other problems they are facing. I imagine that it is difficult enough to manage recovery from a natural disaster never mind with an injured pet in tow. This animal seems to be getting great care at the moment and no one in the story is saying that he will be put down or not treated. I love animals too but I highly doubt this decision warrants opening a spot in hell for this family.

I've emailed the shelter to get info straight from them about what's going to happen - will the legs be treatable, are they taking donations (I'm sure they will! For Mason or in general), is the dog going to be adopted out, etc.

Suzieque, please post what you find because I would also like to make a donation. Thanks.

Suzieque, please let us know if they email you back and what they say ! I would like to make a donation, and possibly IF Mason's family does want to take mason back after his surgery and I would love to adopt him! If anyone knows anything please let me know. I will drive from florida and adopt him! I will try to call the shelter and find out what's going on.

They've got a nice website (I googled it) and got an auto-response immediately after sending the email. The auto-response thanked me for contacting them and said they'd get back to me. I thought that was nice. As requested, I'll post what they come back with.

The video that Glenda posted helps clear up some things. The article above just says the family left the dog at the shelter... where I live that would mean the dog would be put down. That obviously isn't the case here.

GO LOOK AT THE VIDEO I POSTED!

I bet more people will watch it if you re-post it in this thread.

Glenda- Your caps lock is on :-) (Joking with you; I know you're yelling).

Thanks for posting the video, and I'm glad that Mason has been treated and his legs are going to be Ok. I thought the video was going to tell me something more about the owners and hoped to hear that they only asked the shelter to take care of him during treatment, but there was nothing about that.

Am I judgemental as accused above? Perhaps. But I know that my life wouldn't heal nor would I be able to get on with it if I'd given my loyal pet to a shelter.

Hopefully there's "the rest of the story" that we haven't been made aware of.

Mason will be going home to his owner in about 5 weeks when their house is repaired.

Wonderful! That's the ending I was hoping for. I apologize for assuming the worst.

camp, did you know your link went to a page about hydrocortisone? lol
poor little mason. I am glad his family is taking him back!

Wow! I must have been half asleep when I posted that link. Here's the link that was supposed to be there.
