Kitchen/Living Room Remodel

Hi - New to the forum and looking for some opinions. We are planning on taking down the wall between the kitchen and living room and wanted to get input on what cabinets and appliances you would go with.

Pics should be posted below.

The wall that currently has the microwave/oven on it is the wall that will be coming halfway down, with the counters/base cabinets remaining in place and seating on the living room side of the countertops.

Were trying to decide what would work best in our house, since its a bit different then the look nowadays, that has all white molding, we have the oak, which we like since its different then most nowadays. Anyways, we out initial plan was to maybe go white cabinets and white appliances with a light to medium grey countertop. Were undecided on how that would look, so this is where we want some ideas/help.

We are open to painting the cabinets or staining them darker (not replacing them, previous homeowners upgraded them and they are fairly nice cabinets), appliances can be changed out, and countertops can be whatever.

Feel free to get creative...

Thanks for all the comments. To answer a few questions. The light fixture over the table is from forecast lighting urban oasis collection from bellacore.com As far as the armless chairs, I really have never thought much about it. I think what makes them comfortable is that they are all oversized. They are great for parties and having visitors over, but if you plan on using it as a tv or movie watching chair I suggest getting one with arms because they will get tiring. people really like the low Asian style chairs because they are really deep. In all honesty, I bought them because they fit the look I was going for and as you can see, we have a huge sectional so that is where you find me about 98% of the time. And for future reference, most of the furniture is either from Room & Board, Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel or Plummers all of which I bought online since we have none of those stores were I live so far so good!

We did this in the house we are remodeling. We removed a 12 foot non-load bearing wall and made one big room-living room, kitchen and dining room. We placed an island with a bar at the edge of the kitchen area and it breaks the look of the rooms up without having a wall. We love it and everyone that comes into the house comments on how huge the area looks. Before it was your average ranch with fairly large rooms, but now it looks so much larger. We have french doors in the dining room and when they are open, you can see the back yard from the living room also. We have an covered porch and pool right outside the french doors, so it makes for a very inviting view. I don't no how it affects the resale value, but it has been very enjoyable for us.

Wow...thank you everyone!!! Just about brought tears to my eyes to get all this input. 100% agree with everyone on the clutter (but I wanted to show it how we truly live). I have had in mind to repaint something in the soft pale/blue gray like Amy from Texas mentioned. My sunroom is in a soft yellow, so something that would complement that without having to repaint the sun room also. Great idea to take everything down and look at the vintage things I have. I will take a pic of some of those items and grab some images from Pinterest. I've told my husband I'm okay with selling (we have a view of the bay, so it's hard to want to give that up), but I have to know where I'm going. I'm a homebody and don't like change! Also, my husband's tax business is in a building on this property, so it's not as easy to list without dealing with that either. Yes, we could take down those cabinets above the peninsula. The thing with the kitchen is that I could just do an update (solid granite on the counters) but the cabinets themselves are not that great of quality. Don't want to spend $4500 on countertops going over sub-par cabinets. So I remain stuck on that. And then husband doesn't want to put a big chunk of change in if we might be selling in the near-distant future. And finally, on window treatments, those dang windows are so wide, that nothing standard fits them (including standard sized rods). I was thinking of going with just some simple drapes hung really high, but always have the issue with them being too wide. Blinds would have to be done in two narrow panels on each end and one large in middle. Again, I'm just really touched you guys took the time to help me! I have huge FP that separates my kitchen from my LR it did have a wall on one side when we started but my openings now on each side are large. I need to see an actual to scale floor plan of your space . This is mine, I love the separation but my FP is much larger 10x8 x4 and so are the openings on either side. I think yours will need to be at least slimmed down . BTW ours is part of the actual support of the house so not easily removed you will have to check about that with yours

Yup keep your oak.

Then, go to this thread in the Kitchen forum where they experimented and thought about ways to incorporate oak cabs... (see link below)

The most important improvement you can make is to move the fan elsewhere and install less glaring lighting at the task areas.

The major issue to my eye is the lack of any harmony or consistency in design, color or finishes. There's one of everything. Look carefully at the photos and count the number of different materials, colors and finishes!

You may be well served to look for ways to reduce the number of materials, colors and finishes and to create a greater overall consistency. If you don't know where to start, begin by reviewing those items that will remain and look for eays to make the other new or renewd items harmonious with them.

From what I can see in the photos, I would think removing the wall behind range (without relocating range) would be quite awkward. It looks like the kitchen currently opens onto a family room that is not your living room?

Post an overhead measured diagram of the space if you want some meaningful assistance.

My advice would be for the kitchen to move the small table to the center of the wall...may have to move the ovrhead light. Then remove the fan and put pendants over the bar....easy with track lighting. The living room looks cluttered. The dining room like chair and table need to be removed, and the black leather chair needs brought out of the corner and put flat against the wall...take half of your pillows out of the room and maybe put an aqua throw on your couch to match the aqua pillow. No pillows on the leather chair...just the small table and tourchir by it. Remember, I have always heard and found that less is more. Also at a later date, a nice rug that goes under the front legs of your sectional and coffee table would b nice...maybe some aqua, brown and lime green in it.

I think I need a plan view- where will your range go? You already appear to have counter seating at the island- are you thinking about removing the island and putting the range there? Where will the fridge go?

I like your floors and your oak trim.
