That was certainly interesting! I don't garden, but my parents still put out a huge garden every year so I copied off some of the photos and instructions for them.

Isn't the Vertical Gardening forum great? I Googled "cattle panel trellis" one night and spent hours looking at them. Decided I'd never get the posts in straight, though.

I do know what they are but never would have thought of using one that way.That's a neat idea.You could even cover one with plastic and make a green house???
That is what we use at home for a dog pen.
DS just built a fence around the front yard with T-posts and the fencing that looks like that but the squares are smaller.Looks pretty nice and keeps the kids in.LOL

This spring I put some panels in my new berry patch for tieing up the blackberries and raspberries, after they start growing.

I've seen several of them arched and wired together to make a nifty grape arbor that will last forever. They were wired up about a foot off the ground to pieces of metal fence posts to allow for mowing or weedeating beneath the panels.

I thought they would be nice for growing some vining crops that often take up so much room and get weedy in the veggie garden, like cucumbers and yellow summer squash and hope to do that yet this year.

Ok....never heard of it or the vertical gardening forum. TFS Why is it called a cattle panel? How does it relate to cattle?

Nicole, I assume the panels are linked together to make a cattle fence. Or maybe I'm wrong, and they serve some other function.

Oakleyok, I think by now I can call myself a country girl. In fact, I wrote about it in my blog earlier this month. I've lived on an old farm for 35 years. But I was born and raised in New York City.

I'm itching to open up my bean seeds. Kentucky Wonders are my favorites, although I looked for Fortex this year because I heard such good things about them. Didn't find them, though. I'm also planning to grow Royal Burgundy and Black Valentine bush beans. But first I have to figure out how to set up my arch. I don't have a clue what to do first! It must be a two-person job. I dislike two-person jobs....... :-)

Nichole-Alisande is right,they are put together and used as fencing for cattle,sheep,whatever.Usually as a temporary holding place as they can be handled and moved easily.They are connected with T-posts,the ones alisande used to anchor her arch.They are pretty nifty and economical to have for keeping in all kinds of animals when you don't want or need a permanent fence or pen.

Go out and buy some zip ties. you know, those nylon thingies you can tie stuff together with. Get them long enough to go around the fence posts (which I hope you got four off, when you got the panel).

Put a fence post in the ground... by pounding on it. Tough to do by yourself, unless you have a fence post driver. I am lucky to have one. :)

Then measure the distance you need for fence post number two. Should be the distance of the height of the cattle panel.

Drive that one in.

Now, decide how wide you like your arch. Put two more fence posts in, straight across from the first ones.

Now, lay your panel so one end lines up with two fence posts. Tie the bottom to the fence posts with the zip ties.

Wrestle the panel across to the other side, and tie to the bottom of the other two fence posts.

Now, go ahead and put at least two more zip ties up on each fence posts attaching the panel.

You can use more than three zip ties per post, but use at least three per post.

I was hoping to do the job by myself, but I think that's unrealistic. Maybe I'll see how far I can get before I call in the reinforcements. I see an arch in my future this weekend!

Is this what you're after, Susan? The link to the vertical gardening thread would not open for me. I saw this at a nursery. They had many such arches, each one covered with a different vine as part of a demonstration garden. We use ours for green beans. It's much easier on my back to pick them without so much bending over. The dog is optional.

I just grew up in small town Germany with a dad that always said: You can do anything you want if you try. LOL, got me in quite a few pickles at times, but otherwise, I managed to tackle a few projects that were way over my head. :)

Of course, having the right tools (power tools) makes the world of difference.
