I'm treating DS for lunch.

I rarely have the pleasure of his company, and he loves home cooked meals, which he doesn't get that often.

So I'm having Kalua pork, and oven is set to come on at 2 am, for 8 hours of cooking.

White bbq sauce for the pork. A Southern thing.

Wild Rice

Fried green tomatoes

And Molten Lava cakes.

My treat!

I usually do the treating, but tomorrow I'm being treated. We are all going out for a Mother's Day brunch.

Scott, Although the cooler temps in the sunroom might slow down the sprouting of the slow seeds, they'll still sprout. You'll get the quickest germination of tomato seeds at 75-95 degrees but they'll sprout at substantially cooler temps. I know from experience that volunteers sprout in my garden or around the edges of my compost piles in late March through late April when the soil is still pretty cool and the nighttime temps are downright cold. Bottom heat speeds up germination but it certainly isn't necessary. I grew seedlings for probably 20 years or so before I bought a germination mat. I really only bought the mat could speed up germination and maintain a strict schedule of starting new seed flats every couple of days. After I seed a flat, it gets just a couple of days on the mat, and the seeds often are germinating well by the second day. Once the seeds are popping up, that flat comes off the mat and another one goes on it, and then I repeat that over and over and over again until all my seeds are up. Before I had a germination mat, I used to place the freshly-planted flats on top of the refrigerator. On a pretty warm day, I'll carry a freshly-planted flat outside and set it on the concrete patio in full sun so it can soak up heat from the sunlight and the patio beneath it. Once they're up, I keep all the seedlings except for the true heat lovers like peppers, at cool temps in the 50-70 degree range, usually on our screened-in back porch. Sometimes I'll let the seedlings stay outside all night once the nights are staying above 45 degrees. I carry a lot of flats in/out in late winter/early spring so the seedlings are growing at lower temps during the day, but still not exposed to below-freezing temps at night. Seedlings grown in cooler conditions stay stockier and are easier to harden off than seedlings grown on at indoor temperatures for weeks and weeks. Good tip! I got a recipe for liver treats, and considering all the disgusting revolting and harmful crap that goes into the base for pet food and treats, I have decided to start making my own treats as well. As for the regular food, I switched to Natures Variety after much research and my dog and cat loved it from the start. It is a little more expensive but much healthier so could save in vet bills in the long run. If you email Natures Variety and say you would like some samples, they send you a coupon for a FREE 5lb bag. (valued at around $9 depending on where you buy it) Anyway, here is the recipe for liver jerky Cook some calves liver in water, till done (don't overcook, look for timing on poached liver either in a cookbook or online) Add some chopped garlic to the water for extra flavor Remove liver and cut into bite size chunks appropriate for your dog's size. Place on cookie sheet and into a 200 degree over for 2 or 3 hours, till dried. Store in a container in the fridge. The whole point is to turn it into "jerky" and some new ovens, like mine, have a food dehydrating setting, but the low heat/long time setting in a regular oven should work fine. If you try it, I would love to hear how it works out. I have finals this week, but will have more time next week and plan on making a huge batch to give as xmas presents to dogs of friends and family and to the rescue group where I got Oobi. Now, Ms minnamouse, I wonder if I add lemon juice to the liver at some point if it would help it to keep longer, so it won't have to go in the refridgerator...any suggestions on when to add it? Although, jerky is supposed to keep forever, AND these treats are so delicious that they won't last long!

Whenever I hear that someone acquired an animal for a specific purpose, i.e., playmate, etc., I cringe. In my opinion, unless you acquire an animal for anything other than love and companionship, you shouldn't have one. She needs to find a new home for the poor dog. If she doesn't, then you should take the dog and do it for her. She's an idiot in my opinion and isn't fit to have any animals. That statement about wanting a shelter pet in case it "didn't work out" tells the whole story about her.

Thanks everyone--I of course can't stop looking at it myself--but I've had to, because we moved out at 8 a.m. this morning to let them refinish my floors...so I'm logging in from a SpringHill Suites (Gotta have my GW :)) For those who asked for details, here are a few (okay more than a few), and I'll link to my other thread regarding the whole project (it's been a whole-house odyssey since June 23). I'll plan on posting a detailed account when we reach the finish line :) The soapstone is Green Mountain Original PA and the cabinets are Brighton in Natural Cherry (Shaker doors, full overlay, low-sheen finish) It's not a Berta, but it's close--it's a Fratelli Onofri. The Berta lost out because the oven on the Fratelli fit my largest pans and the Berta did not...plus I really loved the matte finish of the anthracite color on the Fratelli. I must say, that after shopping for soapstone since the spring, the slabs I ended up with were the nicest I've seen through the whole process--some of that had to do with my persistence but honestly it was mostly just luck. I contracted both cabinets and counters through Cabinet Discounters in Columbia, MD. They in turn contract with Creativeincounters (creativeincounters.com) to fabricate the counters. This company just happens to source their soapstone from Green Mountain, via a stone yard in Savage Mill, MD called Carapace. I bugged Carapace for nearly three weeks every day until I found out when their next shipment of soapstone was due to arrive, and I visited on the day it arrived before it was even off the palate. Because they hadn't even had the chance to unload it or catalog it properly I wasn't able to reserve specific slabs but in this case it was clear from the get-go that this bunch was exceptional. So I called the fabricators within the hour and had them call the stoneyard to specify slabs only from that shipment. I don't know if any of this would work in other places, but all of these people were extraordinarily helpful and accomodating. I also loved the templating process with creativeincounters. They are artists. The installers also clearly appreciated the material. We have a bit of a way to go with the kitchen. The breakfast area you see with the little round bar will remain red oak like the rest of the house. The work area of the kitchen will actually be a Mannington sheet vinyl called Socorro Slate (in Fieldstone color). The hardware will be simple matte black knobs and cup pulls. The sink is a very BIG Franke I got on ebay (model number is escaping me at the moment), and I'll have a Price Pfister Hanover pull down faucet. The fridge just came last weekend and is a Samsung... My one regret so far is the blankety blank Viking microwave/convection oven. I got it on extreme closeout from a reputable dealer and it has not worked from day one. The repair parts are on the way. I can see the writing on the wall--I'll probably have a very expensive designer doorstop. It was an impulse buy and I'm paying for it in more ways than one! Just stupid--I knew it was just a rebadged sharp when I bought it, but the price was good enough that I told myself it was worth a little extra--like finding that pair of designer jeans on the clearance rack. Thought I'd learned those lessons already. Oh well. Hmmmm...what else...the backsplash decision is still up in the air--right now it's a toss up between pressed tin (which we actually had in the old kitchen) I'm ready for a change and don't prefer this option but DH is pulling for it because he really really liked it. I'm pulling for this lovely glass subway tile spotted in an IKEA model kitchen--it's a smokey grey/taupe color that seems to pick up the colors around it well--in Ikea it was set vertically in neat rows and looked fabulous. The backsplash will only go on the fridge and sink side of the kitchen. The stove, bar, windows side will remain just painted--there's plenty of interest over there already. I will have a stainless backsplash between the stove and my Futuro Futuro hood (the Rainbow model). You can see in the pics I think that my hood wall has undergone some more construction--though the odds were slim, we managed to need to go out the exterior fascia with the hood in the exact location of a load bearing stud--it's complicated to explain so I won't bother here--but suffice it to say, that wall got opened up again this week after cabs went in and I'm nervous as all get out about the drywallers coming back to finish it off now that my beautiful stuff is there--but I'll just have to grin, pray and bear it! The paint will be BM Windchime (an Affinity color) if you visit my other thread you'll see pics of the new dining room already in that color. The spaces open up to each other and I decided to go monochromatic because I just love the color so much.It looks fabulous with the black, and also with red accents... There will eventually be glass in all those glass front cabinets but that's weeks away as well--I haven't even ordered it yet because I couldn't decide on what type. Glad I waited--now that we've started unpacking it's clear to me that clear glass would be a disaster. I want a little opacity to hide when things aren't "just right" in there :) Hard to cram 4 and a half months of construction and 11 months of planning into one post so I think I'll stop now! Happy to answer questions though--it's so nice to be able to prattle on about it with people who are interested...I feel like my coworkers, friends and neighbors must be running from me by now since although I try not to let it, this project I know consumes most of my thought and conversation. I really don't know what I will fix tomorrow or if David and I will eat out. Our Daughter Jessica is in Arizona but she will call even though we talk 6-7 times a day. I love the fact she calls so much and doesn't think anything is wrong with that...LOL Jessica did send me a card but it didn't come in today's mail and she is all upset about it. I told her not to worry....I know she loves me and thinks of me everyday as I do her.

Tomorrow will be hard to get through....but I will.

I won't be with Mama; she's in Arkansas, but I'll call her, and the two aunts, and my 92-year-old friend, and my high school friend. Each, in their own way, are "moms" too, but Mama is the original and best Mama ever.

I'm treating...

The kids will all be here...I hope...I'm cooking up a great big pan of baked spaghetti. It is something like a Lasagna. Layer cooked spaghetti (a 2 lb pkg), then a layer of mixture...which is Cheese soup, Nacho soup , one large jar Prego traditional spaghetti, one reg jar Prego 3 cheese and about 2 lbs of hamburger (browned)...and a layer of mozzarella cheese...About three layers and cover with lots of mozzarella cheese . Bake 350degrees for half an hour.
I'll probably have a salad and garlic bread with it.

We had this at a friends home after church a few weeks ago...It was really good.

My DS#1 is here with his wife and he helped Dh put in the dock. I cooked dinner, shrimp stir fry, DS bought Dairy Queen.

It will just be DH and I.He just asked if I laid anything out for dinner tomorrow.LOL I asked him if he was cooking.I told him it was Mother's day and I wasn't suppose to have to cook.He said he could make a sandwich!LOL Oldest DD lives an hour away and came over this afternoon.We went out to eat so I guess that could be my early Mother's Day meal.LOL DH and I may go out to eat later in the afternoon to avoid the lunch rush.Don't know yet.

We cancelled our Mother's Day dinner at Amber's because she is still sick with a cough. The other two girls have made other plans. Not sure what my son is doing for today. Anyway, I have beans to put in the oven to bake, I have pork and beef barbecue to heat up and I made deviled eggs and also have the deep dish apple pie. I think Amber and Mike will come over long enough to eat with me. Husband went off to work. I doubt if he even knows it is Sunday! I am not going to church today, just don't feel up to it. Everyone have a great day.

DH took me to dinner last night at Stumpknockers, a seafood restaurant on the Withlacoochee river. We left home around 4:15 because it's a pretty long drive. We got there a little after 5 (drove by it and had to turn around) and the place was packed. Already had a 45 minute wait, but we ate outside and didn't wait at all. By the time we left just a little after six, there was no more room in the parking lot.

I don't know what the attraction is. It's mainly fried fish, shrimp, oysters, gator and FROG LEGS (no, I didn't have them). Fried seafood is just fried seafood to me. It was good, but not good enough to wait 45 minutes or longer for. I had shrimp--DH had oysters.

I told my hubby and two daughters just be home at dinner time. I'm making chicken, twice baked potatoes, carrots and brownie cheesecake. I don't expect gifts and cards, just their presence. Happy Mothers Day all!

One of our sons is having a cook out...Tonight our DD and her family will be stopping....
After Mass this morning, we came home for breakfast, which was nothing special...Other than that, pretty normal day...If we weren't going to my son's, I'd be either quilting or working on the flower beds....

My two DD's came over yesterday and took me to my choice eatery for lunch. It was yummy! We had a nice time just the three of us. I told DH he had to stay home this time. I really needed time alone with my girls, it is very rare.
I got wonderful purfume and chocolates with a really nice card.
All those troubled teen years seem to melt away when they are on their own and showing their real appreciation for the things I have done. My DS is in another city, and sent me a nice letter.
It was a great day.
Today, I shall just allow myself to do nothing, or something if I choose.

What the heck!

My honey is taking me down to the Intercoastal in a couple hours,to a seafood place past St Pete Beach, to enjoy their house special..Steamed Seafood Boil..crab, lobster tail,scallops,clams, shrimp, mussels, potatoes & corn..ummmm!

I am treating, it is just DH, DS and myself.
Michele is working and Daniele lives in Cali.
We are having spiral ham, potatoes, green beans and cabbage; no dessert.
I will get DS a Mcflurry when I take him back to his place.

My DH says I am not his Mother.....so I guess I will be cooking. If he goes to get some tortillas and some Ortega whole Anaheim chiles.
I talked to DS and Jake last night. DDIL sent 5 albums of photos of the kids thru Snapfish and wished me Happy Mother's Day. Best ever Mother's Day present I ever got.
DD called yesterday because she has to work today and I know she will call again tonight to say Happy Mother's Day. She sent me the most special card earlier in the week.

Well, my sons' birthdays are this week too, so I am cooking a combined birthday /Mother's Day dinner with birthday cake for dessert. Youngest was born on Mother's Day.

Beautiful card from my out-of-state DS, a call from DGD and then. . .

My DD and my DGS and his new wife (as of May 1st.) came and brought lunch. Ham, potato salad, cheeses, rolls, humongous strawberries with white and chocolate dips. And homemade peanut butter ice cream!!

I was especially pleased that the newly-weds came, since they just got back on Friday evening from their honeymoon.

Also got a big hanging basket begonia and a big bag of M&Ms.

They came at noon and stayed until 4:30. While the girls were chatting my DGS did 2 honey-do jobs for me.

Couldn't have been a better Mother's Day.

DH is doing all the cooking tonight. DS would help but he is not very good at it. We are having 'Surf n Turf'. He picked up top sirloin steaks which he is cooking on the grill, giant crab claws, fresh asparagras, mashed Yukon Gold potatoes and some homemade sourdough bread I made today.

For dessert we are having killer Trader JoeÂs Ice Cream Cake. He picked that up yesterday. It is a layer of rich chocolate cake, topped by a layer of the chocolate-est of chocolate ice creams, topped by a layer of crunchy chocolate cookie crumbs, topped by a layer of creamy chocolate chip ice cream, the outside of the cake rolled in more chocolate cookie crumbs, and decorated the top with rosettes of whipped cream.

Just hand me a glass of wine and I will be all set. Oh, almost forgot, he made oatmeal pancakes for breakfast this morning. And I got to goof off all day.

Half and half here. My son proposed taking me to a movie which means a lot to us both, and I suggested he arrive early enough for lunch (he's a university student about to take his last finals, so a day off is significant).

He came, we had homemade chicken enchiladas - on of his favorites - and he took me to the movie we both wanted to see. It was a lovely experience.

We went to my mom's and nobody cooked! LOL We had take-out BBQ, baked beans, slaw, etc. I took deviled eggs and she had pineapple cake and Karo Nut Pies. DD, DS, DDIL and the GKS were there. My DB and his wife live next door so there's always a lot of "going back and forth" between the two houses.

Twinkie and I went out and trimmed my Mom's wisteria bushes in the rain and got them looking all good for her. She can do it, but she said she'd have to take a chair out in the yard and sit down and rest every few minutes. We told her she would have drowned! LOL

It was a great day. Wish that Twinkie's mom was still with us.
